When Don Maximiano Errazuriz rode 100 kilometres north of Santiago in 1870 to plant vines in Panquehue, his philosophy was simple: from the best land comes the best wine. The Reserva range is the house's accessible entry point into that same philosophy.

Since Eduardo Chadwick took over the house in 1983, Errazuriz has paved the way for Chilean fine wine internationally, with the flagship Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve as its most famous example. The Reserva range represents the house's more accessible, everyday tier, while still carrying the imprint of the same terroir philosophy.

  • Bottle of Montepeloso Gabbro 2013 red wine
    Item no.: 22227865423147394-2021-03-0099

Gabbro is named after the dark volcanic rock found in Montepeloso's vineyards - a soil that gives Cabernet Sauvignon a distinctly mineral power.

    Expert's Description

Montepeloso Gabbro 2013 is a Red Wine from Tuscany, Italy made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, bottled at 15% ABV.

The wine comes from the Suvereto area of Tuscany and is made from some of the estate's oldest vines, several over 40 years old. Gabbro is aged for 18 months in 80% new French oak, in a mix of 400-litre casks and barriques, and then matures further in bottle. Montepeloso is regarded by many connoisseurs as one of Tuscany's most ambitious smaller producers.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Coffee bean, cedar, tobacco and a hint of black olives.

    Palate

Full-bodied, yet with perfectly balanced acidity that keeps the wine lively.

    Finish

    Long and complex.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 17-18°C, ideally decanted an hour before serving, in a Bordeaux glass. Pairs with aged beef, game and hearty cheeses.

Medium to high. Montepeloso is a small, cult-status producer in Tuscany with a strong reputation among wine critics, and Gabbro is considered the estate's flagship. With now over ten years in bottle, the 2013 vintage sits in an attractive mature window, making it interesting for collectors of smaller, hand-crafted Italian producers.

  • Bottle of Niepoort Batuta 2019 elegant red wine from the Douro Valley
    Item no.: 059763-615-413

"Batuta" is Portuguese for baton - the tool a conductor uses to make many voices play as one. The name suits a wine that brings together vines up to a hundred years old from Niepoort's vineyards into a single, coherent tone.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Batuta 2019 is a Portuguese red wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 12.5%.

The grapes come from 70-100 year old vines on schist soils near Quinta de Nápoles, and form a field blend including Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete and Malvazia Preta. After harvest, the wine is aged for 20 months in French barriques, giving it a finely integrated yet distinct oak structure.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia as a classic Port house. Under Dirk Niepoort, the house began seriously experimenting with still Douro table wines, and Batuta belongs among the more ambitious, terroir-driven cuvées in that range.

The style has often been compared to a fine Burgundy rather than a typical, powerful Douro red - a result of the old vines' low yields and a restrained, precise winemaking approach.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Perfumed and almost ethereal, with graphite, flowers and dark berries such as blackberry and blackcurrant, integrated with a hint of Asian spice and pencil shavings.

    Palate

Medium-bodied and almost understated, with a fresh, pure line and a gentle build towards a long finish.

    Finish

Elegant and persistent, with continuing dark berry fruit and a light mineral undercurrent.

    Did You Know?

Several reviewers have tasted Batuta blind and believed they were drinking a fine red Burgundy - a surprising comparison for a wine made entirely from traditional Douro grapes, from vines that in some cases were planted before the Port house itself turned 100.

  • Bottle of dark red wine with simple, modern label
    Item no.: 059763-615-417

In 1991, Niepoort bottled a red wine for the first time without fortifying it with brandy - a small step on paper, but one that later helped the entire Douro Valley see itself with new eyes.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Redoma Tinto 2019 is a Portuguese red wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 12%.

The wine comes from old, north-facing vineyards in Cima Corgo, many of them over 60 years old and planted as a traditional field blend of varieties such as Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão. After harvest the grapes are fermented and aged in large, old oak vats, allowing the wine to settle without being pushed by new wood.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family, and for generations the house was known solely as a Port producer. That changed when Dirk Niepoort took the helm and began experimenting with still wines from the same schist vineyards the house had always used for Port.

Redoma Tinto was the first of these red wines and is today considered one of the bottlings that sparked what many call "the new Douro" - a wave of terroir-driven still wines from a region the world had otherwise only known for Port.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark berries, dried herbs and a touch of black pepper, underpinned by a faint mineral scent of schist.

    Palate

Juicy and full-bodied with cherry and blackberry, supported by firm yet rounded tannins and bright acidity.

    Finish

Long and spicy, with lingering dark fruit and a dry, faintly peppery close.

    Item no.: 22227065464-88209

Paniza lies in the dry, windswept Cariñena district southwest of Zaragoza, where old vines of Garnacha and Tempranillo thrive on soil other grapes would give up on.

    Expert's Description

Paniza 2023 La Fea Tinto is a Red Wine from Cariñena, Spain made from a blend of Syrah, Tempranillo and Garnacha, bottled at 14% ABV.

The name "La Fea" means "the ugly one" in Spanish - an affectionate jab referring to the grape's rough, unmistakable character rather than a polished, pretty surface. Cariñena is one of Spain's oldest wine regions, and its high elevation gives the grapes wide temperature swings, resulting in intense fruit and good acidity.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Expert's Description

Pinea 2014 Vintage Ribera del Duero is a Red Wine from Ribera del Duero, Spain made from 100% Tempranillo, bottled at 14.5% ABV.

The wine comes from old vines on the plateau's lean soils, where wide day-to-night temperature swings push the grapes to develop unusual concentration. The 2014 vintage now has 10 years behind it and sits in its mature drinking window, where the oak spice has melted into the fruit. The wine is served at several of Denmark's leading restaurants.
