Peaty Whisky

Peaty Whiskey

On this page you will find our large selection of peaty whiskey. Peaty whiskeys are part of the many scotch whiskeys and come with their very own unique flavor and provide a fantastic new addition to your whiskey collection.

Peaty whiskey originates on the Scottish island of Islay. For generations, Islay has dried the barley used in whiskey over a peat bonfire, giving peaty whiskey its unique flavor.

You're never doubt if you're drinking a peaty whiskey from Islay, precisely because of the more powerful taste that's expressed due to the manufacturing process.

With us, you will find in this category a wide variety of world-famous peaty whiskey served in bars around the globe, including the amazing Laphroaig, the powerful Bowmore Tempest and many more. Whatever whiskey you prefer, we are positive that we can find a bottle and brand that fits your palate!
  • Bottle of peated Arran Single Cask Whisky with smoky character from Lochranza Distillery
    Item no.: 0597557-7445

Not every Arran bottling is light and sweet. This one runs the other way — dark, peaty, and richer than most people expect from this distillery.

A single bourbon cask, hand-selected for Denmark, with 50 ppm of peat smoke taking the lead role.

    Expert Description

Arran 2015/2025 Single Cask Denmark 9 Year Old 50 ppm is a Single Islands Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 1st fill bourbon barrel and bottled at 59.6%.

Arran usually distills a lightly peated or unpeated malt, but this single cask is made from barley peated to a full 50 ppm — double the level of the distillery's standard Machrie Moor. Distilled in October 2015, the whisky spent nine years in a single 1st fill bourbon barrel before being bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. Only 246 bottles exist from this cask, all reserved for the Danish market.

Ulrik Bertelsen from Whisky.dk has tasted it and calls it one of the finest peated releases he has met from Arran — a dram where raw power and aromatic depth meet in fine balance.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Rich peat smoke with hints of bonfire and a touch of iodine, but also an underlying sweetness of vanilla and ripe pear that keeps the nose inviting rather than harsh.

    Palate

Softer than expected — baked apple and tropical fruit reach the palate first, before the peat smoke rolls in like a warm wave, carried by the bourbon cask's creamy texture.

    Finish

Long and warming with grilled citrus, white pepper and a dry trace of oak that lingers well after the last sip.

  • Bottle of Arran Machrie Moor peated Whisky from Lochranza Distillery
    Item no.: 22227865466-100206

On Arran's west coast lies a windswept peat moor called Machrie Moor. Legend says the warrior Fingal tied his dog to a stone here — and the distillery named its peated whisky after the place.

A different side of Arran, where the familiar citrus character meets peat smoke.

    Expert Description

Arran Machrie Moor is a Single Islands Malt Scotch Whisky made from lightly peated malt and bottled at 56.2%.

Since 2004, Arran has distilled a small amount of malt peated to around 20 ppm every year — a medium smoke level that offers more than just bonfire and tar. Machrie Moor has become a permanent part of Arran's range, bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour, put together by the distillery's manager James MacTaggart.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Peat smoke and ash meet an underlying sweetness and a lightly salted coastal aroma.

    Palate

Smoky yet balanced, with Arran's classic citrus note shining through.

    Finish

Medium length with lingering smoke and a dry, spiced close.

  • Bottle of Isle of Fionia Barely Legal Iberian Beauty Adventurous Spirit Single Malt Whisky from Nyborg Distillery
    Item no.: 22227865446-11000

Just three years old – hence the name. Barely Legal is the first bottling in Nyborg Distillery's Iberian Beauty trilogy. An old Oloroso sherry cask is not easily fooled by youth, and it shows.

    Expert description

Isle of Fionia Barely Legal is an organic Danish Single Malt Whisky bottled at 53.8% as part of the Adventurous Spirit series from Isle of Fionia / Nyborg Distillery. The whisky is the first in the Iberian Beauty trilogy – three successive bottlings from the same cask, one year apart. Distilled in December 2016 and bottled in December 2019, giving three years of maturation. Developed in two Portuguese STR wine casks, before finishing on a 1st fill Oloroso sherry cask that added winey sweetness, coconut and character. Only 227 bottles produced.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Intense sherry notes with dried fruit, coconut and vanilla pod. A rich winey depth from the Oloroso cask is clearly present, underscored by the roundness of the STR casks.

    Palate

Full-bodied and mature for three years. The sherry cask sweetness settles with notes of dried fruit, warm caramel and coconut. A pleasant warmth at 53.8% carries it well.

    Finish

Long with lingering sherry sweetness and a gentle winey bitterness in the long close.

    Investment potential

Medium. Barely Legal is part of a uniquely documented trilogy from an award-winning distillery, bottled in only 227 copies. The narrative value as "chapter one" of the Iberian Beauty adds interest beyond the taste alone.

    Did you know?

The Iberian Beauty trilogy from Nyborg Distillery is a unique concept bottling where the same cask is drawn from three times, one year apart. The idea is to let whisky enthusiasts follow what an extra year in an old Oloroso sherry cask does to the distillate. Barely Legal is chapter one.

    Item no.: 22227865468-2017

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2017 Douglas Laing Islay Blended Malt Whisky 54,1%

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2017 from Douglas Laing is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 54.1%, created as the powerful and festive annual release of the iconic Big Peat. As always, the blend consists exclusively of single malts from Islay, and the Christmas edition is known for being even more intense, smoky and characterful than the standard bottling – a true winter dram with full strength and plenty of edge.

The aroma is filled with classic Islay smoke: dried seaweed, bonfire smoke, ash and a pronounced medicinal note, balanced by sweet malt, vanilla and a hint of spice. There is also a freshness of citrus and pepper that adds energy and lifts the heavy smoke.

The palate is bold and warming with pronounced peat smoke, salty sea air and a strong ashy profile. Notes of black pepper, liquorice, roasted barley and a touch of caramel emerge, while the 54.1% ABV provides an intense yet well‑integrated heat. The maritime character is present from start to finish.

The finish is long, dry and smoky with lingering ash, pepper and a salty minerality that stays on the palate. A classic Big Peat ending, but with extra Christmas strength and depth.

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2017 is made for those who love Islay smoke in its rawest and most uncompromising form. A festive, powerful and bold release that delivers everything Big Peat fans expect – and a little more.

Bivrost Yggdrasil 2024 is crafted by the world’s northernmost distillery in the cold landscapes of Norway. This whisky is made from Nordic malted barley, melted glacier water, and undergoes a complex fermentation process. Yggdrasil has matured in Oloroso casks and the distillery’s own in-house charred barrels, stored within their Viking-style longhouse at freezing temperatures. The Arctic temperature fluctuations impact the whisky’s maturation, with an average yearly temperature of 0.6°C.

The final result is a complex and fruity whisky with aromas of dried fruits, bonfire, roasted nuts, orange blossoms, and a hint of peat. The palate offers an impressive complexity and a velvety mouthfeel with notes of toasted oak, caramelized mandarin, and a touch of peat.

  • Bowmore 12 Year Old Version Screen Print 1990s Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky collector
    Item no.: 505956-807534-780

A screen-printed label from the 1990s, a classic Bowmore 12 Year and the unmistakable Islay identity. This is the bottle many people remember as their first real Islay malt — and as a collector's piece, it is now more sought-after than ever.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 12 Year Old Version is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 40%. This is the screen-printed edition from the 1990s — a format that has been discontinued and marks a specific chapter in Bowmore's design history. Screen printing directly onto the glass bottle was the standard for the export market at the time, and today it is a marker for collectors of historical whiskies. The contents are classic Bowmore 12 Year: matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks in the iconic No. 1 Vaults, partially below sea level. At 40%, with light peat smoke, honey, citrus and sea salt — Bowmore from the ground up.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light peat smoke, honey and a little citrus. A salty sea breeze and a hint of vanilla. Inviting and accessible.

    Taste

Soft and balanced. Heather honey and ripe fruit, the smoke drawing discreetly through and giving Islay character without overpowering.

    Finish

Clean and medium length. A trace of honey and sea salt remain.

    Did you know?

Screen printing directly onto glass bottles — as used on this edition — was a popular premium packaging method in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly for the export market. It was eventually replaced by adhesive labels as production volumes increased.

    Item no.: 22227865464-7

Where Loch Indaal beats against the walls and part of the warehouse sits below the waterline, one of Islay's most recognisable drams matures. Bowmore 12 Year is where most people begin their journey into the island's peat smoke — and where many keep returning.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 12 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 40%. The flagship expression and first step in the core range from Bowmore, Islay's oldest distillery, founded in 1779. A classic permanent expression — not a limited edition, but a whisky that has stood the test of time and defined what an accessible Islay malt tastes like. Bowmore is one of the few distilleries still running its own traditional floor maltings, where barley is peated to around 25 ppm — notable but never as aggressive as Ardbeg or Lagavulin. This moderate smoke level is a major reason why Bowmore 12 Year is often called the ideal entry point to Islay. The whisky matures in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks in the legendary No. 1 Vaults, one of the world's oldest maturation warehouses.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light and inviting. Honey and citrus at the front, wrapped in Bowmore's characteristic mild peat smoke. A touch of vanilla and fresh flowers.

    Taste

Well-balanced with warm honey, plum and a restrained peat smoke. The sherry cask contributes dark fruit and gentle spice; the bourbon cask provides sweetness and vanilla.

    Finish

Medium length, clean and lightly smoky. Honey and sea salt linger — a satisfying, classic Islay finish.

  • Bowmore 1989/2010 A D Rattray 21 year old Single Cask Islay Malt Whisky 52,2%
    Item no.: 7865449-30155

There are whiskies you open for a special occasion. And there are whiskies that are the occasion. A 21-year-old Bowmore from 1989, bottled directly from a single sherry cask — only 240 bottles, exclusively for the Danish market — falls unmistakably into the second category.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 1989/2010 A.D. Rattray 21 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a sherry cask (cask no. 1099) and bottled at 52.2%. A. Dewar Rattray is one of Scotland's most respected independent bottlers, and Tim Morrison behind the company knows Bowmore from the inside — his family owned the distillery from 1963 to 1994 before Suntory took over. This gives the bottling a particular credibility. Cask no. 1099, a sherry cask, received new make spirit on 18 February 1989 and was bottled exactly 21 years later, on 18 February 2010. That symmetry is rare. Non-chill filtered, natural colour, at natural cask strength of 52.2% and selected specifically for the Danish market — only 240 bottles in total.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark fruit at the front — stewed plums, raisins and a trace of leather. Behind it, Bowmore's sea salt and gentle smoke, now wrapped in the warmth of old sherry oak.

    Taste

Rich and layered. Dark chocolate, dried fig and orange peel with a warming peat smoke running through the middle. The sherry cask has left its mark deeply — yet the Islay character remains intact.

    Finish

Long and complex. Smoke, dried fruit and gentle spice continue for minutes. One of the longest finishes you will find in a Bowmore of this age.

The Morrison family, who owned Bowmore from 1963 to 1994, also owned Highland Park and Auchentoshan. Tim Morrison — the man behind A. Dewar Rattray today — grew up with Bowmore as part of his family's heritage, giving these releases a personal dimension most independent bottlings lack.

  • Bowmore 1997 Symingtons Choice 25 Year Oloroso sherry cask Islay Single Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0210

An Oloroso sherry butt that waited 25 years. Distilled in 1997, bottled in 2023 — and somewhere in between, Bowmore's peat and coastline merged with the cask's dark fruit in a way that simply cannot be planned.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 1997/2023 Symingtons Choice 25 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled as a Single Cask from an Oloroso Sherry Butt at 55.9%. Signatory Vintage released the Symingtons Choice series in 2023 as a tribute to founder Andrew Symington — a collection of carefully selected, aged single casks from Scotland's finest distilleries. This Bowmore from 1997 was drawn from cask no. 2422, a first-fill Oloroso sherry butt, at full cask strength. Distilled on 23 September 1997 and bottled on 9 February 2023 — exactly 25 years in cask. During that time, the sherry and the whisky's maritime DNA slowly found one another: dark fruit and smoke, sea air and oak. Non-chill filtered, natural colour. Bottle 427 of 616.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Rich and warming. Dried plums, dark orange marmalade and fig. Behind it, Bowmore's characteristic sea salt and restrained smoke — now wrapped in sherry depth and beeswax.

    Taste

Full and concentrated. Figs, dark chocolate and orange peel. The peat is present but gentle — a background note rather than the main event. Oak tannins give structure.

    Finish

Very long and complex. Dried fruits, spice and lingering coastal smokiness. Dark chocolate and leather develop slowly as the glass empties.

  • Bowmore 9 Year Islay Single Malt Whisky bourbon sherry honey peat smoke discontinued
    Item no.: 2226699-53

Nine years is not long, but this is Islay — and Bowmore at that. It gives you a whisky that tastes more mature than most 9-year-olds from anywhere else. Smoke, coast and a layer of honey that needs no more time to convince.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 9 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 40%. A discontinued bottling from the distillery on the shores of Loch Indaal — a shorter, more youthful take on Bowmore's characteristic profile. Matured in carefully selected bourbon and sherry casks in the iconic No. 1 Vaults, which sit partially below sea level. The maritime climate leaves its mark here: salty air, stable temperatures and the constant presence of the Atlantic. As an Islay whisky from the island's oldest distillery, Bowmore 9 Year carries the characteristic balance between peat smoke and sweetness — just in a lighter register than the older expressions. An interesting tasting experience for those who want to see what Bowmore does with younger casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and open with peat, honey and a touch of caramel. Sea salt present behind a light fruity note.

    Taste

Medium body with peat smoke, honey and dark chocolate. The bourbon cask brings clean sweetness; the sherry adds a gentle dark fruit undertone.

    Finish

Short to medium, clean and lightly smoky with a lingering honey warmth.

  • Bowmore Devils Cask Small Batch Release II 10 Year Oloroso Pedro Ximenez sherry Islay Single Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 223356464-855

Dark, concentrated and with Bowmore's maritime DNA wrapped in layers of sherry sweetness. Devil's Cask Batch II is the release many consider the most harmonious of the series — and when you open a bottle, it becomes clear why.

    Expert's description

Bowmore Devil's Cask 10 Year Small Batch Release II is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in first-fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and bottled at 56.3%. The second release in the legendary Devil's Casks series — one of the most sought-after sherry bomb expressions from Islay. Released in 2014, it was quickly snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Matured for 10 years in a combination of first-fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, giving an extremely deep, dark and intense flavour profile. Bottled at 56.3%, it delivers a powerful, concentrated experience where Bowmore's smoky and maritime DNA meets massive sherry sweetness. Batch II is regarded by many as one of the most harmonious releases in the series and stands today as a modern classic.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark fruits, raisins, dates and burnt sugar with dark chocolate. Behind it, warm spiced smoke from Islay's peat — everything filtered through the depth of Pedro Ximénez sweetness.

    Taste

Thick and rich. Treacle, dark berries and Christmas cake spice. The sherry intensity is extraordinary; peat announces itself beneath the fruit and chocolate layers.

    Finish

Very long and warming. Dark chocolate, espresso and a trail of coastal smoke that slowly fades. The PX sweetness lingers well after the peat has gone.

    Did you know?

The name "Devil's Casks" refers to Bowmore's famous Vaults warehouses. The legend goes that the Devil steals a portion of the whisky each year as it matures — what whisky people know as "the angels' share". Bowmore gave this familiar phenomenon a darker, more dramatic twist.

Only 6,000 bottles. The first batch. Released in 2013 and gone almost immediately. Bowmore The Devil's Cask Batch I is not just a whisky — it's the beginning of a series that set the standard for what Islay and sherry can do together.

    Expert's description

Bowmore The Devil's Casks 10 Year Small Batch Release I is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in first-fill sherry casks and bottled at 56.9%. Released in 2013 as the first expression in the Devil's Casks Small Batch Release series — only 6,000 bottles were produced, making it a collector's favourite almost immediately. Matured for 10 years in first-fill sherry casks, which give an unusually deep and intense flavour profile for the age. Bottled at 56.9%, preserving both the richness and complexity of the cask. Often cited as one of Bowmore's most successful modern sherry bombs — intense, deep and memorable. A bottle that marks the beginning of one of Islay's most celebrated limited release series.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Rich sherry notes: dark fruits, raisins and plums with dark chocolate and warm peat smoke. Dense and concentrated from the first-fill sherry influence.

    Taste

Powerful and dark with sherry sweetness, dried fruit, Christmas cake and a bold peat backbone. The first-fill sherry casks give a depth that is almost viscous.

    Finish

Exceptionally long. Sherry sweetness, smoke and dark chocolate keep returning long after the glass is empty — one of the longest finishes in Bowmore's range.

    Item no.: 5059796-166

Braunstein and Friends is more than a product name. It is a snapshot of a collaboration from 2014 — a festival expression that is peated, compact and historic in the sense that it will never be repeated. 20 cl of peated Braunstein from a gathering that is long past.

    Expert description

Braunstein and Friends Festival Edition 2014 Gift Set is a peated Danish Single Malt Whisky at 42%, bottled at 20 cl. The Festival Edition series from Braunstein Destilleri in Køge is released in connection with whisky festivals and is characterised by collaborative bottlings — hence "and Friends". The peated character comes from peated malt, which gives Braunstein's distillate a round, smoke-filled profile. 42% is an approachable strength that brings the smoke to the fore without overwhelming it.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Round smoke and light oak. Sweet malt under the smoke with a hint of sea air and damp stone. Braunstein's characteristic balance is present — this is not aggressive smoke, but a soft and inviting version.

    Palate

Light and approachable at 42%. Peated malt and soft smoke with sweetness from the oak maturation. Light spice and a touch of citrus.

    Finish

Shorter but warm. The smoke lingers and gives way to sweet malt and a lightly salted finish.
