    Expert Description

Rum Nation Panama 21 Year Black Decanter is a Single Domaine Rum from Panama, 21 years old, aged on American oak casks, bottled at 43%.

The rum is a blend created by experienced hands at some of Panama's finest distilleries, made from sugarcane molasses and distilled on continuous column stills. The base is aged locally in American oak casks (Quercus alba) for at least 21 years, but the recipe also includes a large percentage of even older rum to add further character and complexity. The result is the fruit of decades of experimentation at Rum Nation and reflects a long tradition of elegance and thick sweetness.

The Black Decanter release is named after its distinctive dark bottle, which sets it visually apart from Rum Nation's other Panama releases.

  • Bottle of Wagemut XO Barbados rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-508

The plan was only three months of finishing - reality turned out nearly four times as long, because Wagemut wouldn't stop until it was exactly right.

    Expert Description

Wagemut XO is a Barbados Rum, distilled and aged for 18 years on American white oak barrels, with a finishing period of nearly 12 months in first-fill PX sherry casks, bottled at 43.8%.

The long 18-year base ageing gives the rum a solid fundamental character, which the PX sherry casks then build upon. The original plan for the finishing period was only three months, but Wagemut let the casks work markedly longer - nearly a whole year - to achieve the right balance between the sherry's sweetness and the rum's own strength. The result is a subtle, natural sweetness that surprises without becoming overwhelming. Each bottle is hand-filled and individually numbered, giving each bottle a personal touch.

Wagemut is a German brand that has specialised in selecting and finishing rum from around the world - in this case starting from classic Barbados rum.

  • Miniature bottle British Royal Navy Imperial Rum with certificate
    Item no.: 059763-615-9

A numbered certificate accompanies this small bottle - proof that the contents come from one of the original gallon bottles the British Navy used for sailors' daily rum ration.

    Expert description

British Royal Navy Miniature with Certificate is a dark Imperial Rum of unknown distillery, bottled at 54% in a small 5 cl collector's bottle with an accompanying certificate of authenticity.

The rum comes from one of the original "One Imperial Gallon" bottles carried aboard British Navy ships for distributing the daily "tot of rum". When the tradition was abolished in 1970, remaining stocks were recalled, and some of the rare gallon bottles only resurfaced many years later. To make the contents available to collectors, part of the rum has been bottled into small 5 cl bottles, each with a numbered certificate documenting its origin.

Only 70 of these miniature bottles with certificate have been produced, making each one a tangible piece of British Naval rum history - an era when navy strength sat well above ordinary rum, and where the very term "over proof" arose as a test of whether the rum could ignite gunpowder.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark, molasses-heavy and with a distinct hint of age.

    Palate

Powerful and raw, in the classic navy style at high strength.

    Finish

    Long, warm and lingering.

    Investment potential

High - only 70 numbered miniature bottles with certificate exist, offering access to an authentic navy rum that is otherwise almost impossible to find available.

    Did you know?

The term "proof" in spirits comes from the Navy's practice of testing rum strength by pouring it over gunpowder and trying to ignite it - if the gunpowder could still burn, the rum was "above proof".

  • Abuelo XII Anos Three Angels Panama Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0377

Only casks from the top tier of Ron Abuelo's hot warehouses, where up to 15% of the rum evaporates each year, are selected for this intense edition of the house's 12 year old classic.

    Expert Description

Abuelo XII Anos Three Angels is a Panama Rum double-aged 12 years in white American oak followed by extra-charred casks and bottled at 43%.

The rum is produced by the Varela Hermanos distillery in Panama and is a more intense edition of the house's award-winning Abuelo XII Two Oaks. Unlike the standard release, this uses only rum from the casks on the top row of Ron Abuelo's vintage pallet warehouses, where temperatures can reach as high as 35 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat increases evaporation, known as the angel's share, to as much as 15% a year, far above the 2-3% typically seen in Scotland, which gave the rum its name Three Angels.

The result is an intense, deeply flavoured rum, where toasted hazelnut meets dark chocolate and a long, lightly smoky finish.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted hazelnut, sweet spice and exotic fruit with a touch of leather, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans.

    Palate

Intense and deep with character from the charred cask, vanilla and honeyed sweetness, dried plum and coconut.

    Item no.: 222275555-66639

Gayuma means "love potion" in Filipino – a rum that seduces with smoke from Islay and sweetness from Rioja, born on the slopes of the dormant volcano Kanlaon.

    Expert Description

Don Papa Gayuma is a Filipino Rum made from 100% Negros sugarcane molasses and bottled at 40%.

The rum first matures in the volcanic climate at the foot of Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros, before being finished in a double finish in ex-Rioja and Islay whisky casks. This gives Gayuma its dark amber colour and a character that blends the rum's natural sweetness with a distinct touch of peat smoke – an unusual combination for a Filipino rum. The Don Papa brand is named after Papa Isio, a Filipino freedom fighter and local hero figure from Negros.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful and full, with peat, vanilla and orange peel, supported by dried flowers, delicate oak and dried fruit.

    Palate

The smoke wraps around creamy tones of exotic fruit and vanilla, while light orange zest and deep cocoa unfold with a touch of clove and mint.

    Expert Description

Providence Haiti Pure Single Rum 2019 is a Haiti Rum, distilled from sugar cane juice and sugar cane syrup on a copper Müller pot still with a bain-marie water bath and aged 3 years, bottled at 52%.

The rum is bottled by Velier in collaboration with Providence, the small distillery in Port-au-Prince, and matured in casks from the legendary, now-closed Caroni distillery in Trinidad. Expert Description

Ron Zacapa Armonia Heavenly Cask is a Guatemalan Solera Rum matured through the Sistema Solera method and bottled at 40%.

Armonia is the third release in Zacapa's Heavenly Cask collection, where each of the four editions celebrates one of the cask types used in the company's Sistema Solera maturation process. The base is not ordinary molasses but sugarcane honey – the concentrated first pressing of fresh sugarcane juice before any sugar is removed. The rum matures through a solera system spanning ages 6 to 23 years, where the young rum first rests at least 3 years in bourbon casks, before moving through freshly charred bourbon casks and finally finishing in Oloroso sherry casks. Behind the edition stands master blender Lorena Vásquez, who has shaped several of Zacapa's recent releases.

    Item no.: 2227865479-1106-197280322-98

Rum from the Dominican Republic typically has a softer, more approachable style than its heavy Trinidadian cousins, and Blackadder's Raw Cask edition shows that character in its purest, unfiltered form.

    Expert Description

Dominican 2011/2021 Blackadder Raw Cask 10 Year Finest is a Dominican Rum from a single cask, aged for 10 years and bottled at 60.1%.

The rum is bottled by Blackadder International, the family-run Scottish bottler founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek, without any filtration or added colour, in line with the rest of the Raw Cask range. Compared to Blackadder's Trinidadian releases, the Dominican style is traditionally lighter and more rounded, something this rum confirms despite its relatively high natural cask strength. The rum was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2021 after 10 years of ageing.

The result is a round, fruity rum, where tropical fruit and vanilla meet a warm, spiced finish with a hint of honey.

    Tasting Notes

    Item no.: 2227865479-1106-197280322-95

Blackadder never bottles its Raw Cask series with filtration or added colour, meaning every bottle comes completely unadorned, straight from cask to glass.

    Expert Description

Trinidad 2011/2021 Blackadder Raw Cask 11 Year Finest Trinidad is a Trinidad Rum from a single cask, aged for 11 years and bottled at 66.4%.

The rum is bottled by Blackadder International, the family-run Scottish bottler founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek. Under the Raw Cask mark, Blackadder bottles rum and whisky straight from the cask with no filtration whatsoever, neither chill nor mechanical, and no added colouring. This means small fragments of cask char can travel into the bottle, something Blackadder itself calls "cask throwings" and uses as proof that the rum is as natural as it can be. This Trinidadian rum was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2021 after 11 years of ageing, at a high natural cask strength of 66.4%.

The result is an intense, spiced rum, where dark fruit and molasses meet a long, burning finish with notes of pitch and oak.

    Tasting Notes

RomDeLuxe Collectors Series Rum #15 Jamaica Single Cask is a Jamaica Rum, bottled from a single cask by the Danish bottler RomDeLuxe, distilled in 2005 at the Worthy Park distillery and aged 17 years, bottled at 54.4%.

Worthy Park is one of Jamaica's most respected pot still distilleries, known for its pronounced, ester-rich style, fully preserved when RomDeLuxe bottles directly from the cask with no filtration, added sugar or colouring. The 17 years of ageing in the Caribbean climate have given the rum an unusual depth and intensity, where the characteristic Jamaican funk has been woven together with decades of woody fullness.

The result is one of the most powerful and complex Jamaican rums in RomDeLuxe's Collectors Series.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe banana, sticky funk and a hint of liquorice, supported by dark caramel.

    Palate

Intense and ester-rich with roasted pineapple, brown sugar and a pronounced, vegetal sugar cane character.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19713-1

Trinidad's only distillery, T.D.L., has a character so recognisable that rum connoisseurs can spot it blind. Compagnie des Indes lets it speak entirely for itself here after 13 years in cask.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2005/2018 T.D.L. 13 Year is a Trinidad Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2005, bottled in July 2018 at 45%.

The rum comes from Trinidad Distillers Limited, often abbreviated T.D.L., the only operating distillery on Trinidad and therefore the mandatory source for any Trinidad rum. After distillation, the rum spent 13 years in cask in the Caribbean, before being selected and bottled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes with no added colour or sweetness.

T.D.L.'s rum is known for a distinct, medicinal, menthol-like character that makes it easily recognisable among connoisseurs, and which this bottling shows in a mature, well-developed form after over a decade of ageing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Camphor, menthol and eucalyptus, typical of T.D.L.'s rum.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280132

Luca Gargano, the man behind Velier, returns to the 19th-century rum tradition, where Jamaican merchants blended rum from several distilleries under one brand.

    Expert Description

Papalin Original Vatted 7 Year Pot Still Jamaica Rum is a Jamaica Rum, a blend of pot still rum from Hampden Estate and Worthy Park, tropically aged 7 years and bottled at 47%.

Papalin is Luca Gargano's personal project, created to revive the lost tradition of "vatted" rum, blends of rum from several distilleries on the same island, which Jamaican merchants made in the late 1800s, before the style disappeared in the 1970s. By uniting Hampden Estate's wild, ester-rich character with Worthy Park's more balanced profile, Papalin creates a rum that shows the breadth of Jamaica's pot still tradition in a single bottle.

The result is a complex, fat-laden rum with both medicinal and spiced tones.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Apple, candied lemon and almonds, with eucalyptus, medicinal notes and burnt wood.

    Palate

Rich and generous with vanilla, mirabelle plum and herbaceous notes of menthol, liquorice and cardamom.

Panama is known for a lighter, more delicate rum style than its neighbours, which this bottling confirms with its relatively bright, yet complex profile.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2007/2017 Secrete 9 Year is a Jamaica Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2007, bottled in 2017 at 54.1%.

This Jamaican edition comes from a cask marked "Secrete", as the distillery behind it is undisclosed, a practice several Jamaican distilleries use to protect their identity from competitors. The rum is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour or sugar, from an outturn of 238 bottles.

The typical Jamaican "funky" character, with its pronounced ester profile, is clear in this rum, where tropical cask ageing has produced a powerful, fruity intensity.

    Item no.: 22227865417-19127

Glass demijohns filled with charred oak staves sound like a homemade solution. At Mhoba, it's the very method behind one of South Africa's most acclaimed rum expressions.

    Expert description

Mhoba Select Reserve Glass Cask is a Pure Single Rum from South Africa, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice and matured over 2 years on charred American oak staves in large glass demijohns, bottled at 60%.

The rum comes from Mhoba Rum Distillery in Mpumalanga. Instead of traditional oak casks, Mhoba uses large glass demijohns filled with virgin American oak staves that are cut and charred over wood coals, a method that gives intense contact between spirit and wood without the cask's own breathing. The result is more balanced and refined than the house's American Oak Aged, yet still with a clear, powerful oak character.

    Nose

Smoky American oak and brown sugar, with sweet, almost bourbon-like notes of caramelised sugar, vanilla and ripe fruit.

    Palate

Mild heat with warm butterscotch pudding, muscovado sugar and smoked pecan pie, with a gradually growing coffee and cocoa character.

    Did you know?

The method of charring oak staves over wood coals instead of using finished casks is unique to Mhoba and gives the distillery full control over how much and how the wood influences the rum.

  • Bottle of Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 6 rum
    Item no.: 22227865416-18733

A cannonball of rum, forced through peated whisky casks for half a year, this is not a random title but a very precise description of what awaits in the glass.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 6 is a Blended Rum composed of matured distillates from Nicaragua and Panama, finished for 6 months in ex-peated Islay whisky casks and bottled at 46%.

The blend is released by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes as a limited edition, bottled in 2018. The Central American rum base provides a round, fruity foundation, which is then given a pronounced smoky layer from the previously peated Islay whisky casks, a combination unusual even within Compagnie des Indes' experimental Boulet de Canon series.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Exotic and fruity, with spices such as pepper and curry, finishing with a subtle smoky tone.

    Palate

Smooth to start with hazelnut and praline, developing mid-palate into a vegetal, full-bodied character.

    Finish

    Delicately roasted and smoky.

Compagnie des Indes' Boulet de Canon series is named after cannonballs and is the house's playground for unorthodox cask experiments, where rum meets casks from everything from whisky to beer and wine, far from the more traditional single cask releases the bottler is otherwise known for.

  • Diamond Distillery 2003/2015 Bristol Classic Guyana Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865443-1511

Guyana's Demerara River has for centuries delivered rum with a heavy, earthy character. Bristol Spirits captured a single distillate from the Diamond distillery in 2003 and let it mature for the best part of a decade before bottling it without embellishment.

    Expert Description

Diamond Distillery 2003/2015 Bristol Classic is a Guyana Rum distilled on column stills and bottled at 43%.

The rum was distilled in 2003 at the Diamond distillery, owned by Demerara Distillers Limited on the east bank of the Demerara River, and cask aged until 2015, when it was bottled by the independent English bottler Bristol Spirits under the Bristol Classic Rum label. The rum is molasses-based and column distilled, a style that offers a cleaner, more traditional expression than the heavy pot still rums Guyana is also known for.

The twelve years of ageing, partly in Guyana and partly after transport to England, has given the rum a balanced character, where fruit and wood meet without either dominating.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Orange and grapefruit meet laurel and verbena, with a hint of herbs in the background.

    Palate

Soft and balanced with ripe citrus, light sweetness and an earthy oak character.

    Finish

Medium length and dry, where the citrus fades out alongside a hint of herbs and oak.
