  • Bottle of Michel Couvreur Special Vatting Malt Whisky with three ages
    Item no.: 22227865465-5

Three ages, three characters, one whisky - Special Vatting is Michel Couvreur's proof that a good vatting can add up to more than its parts.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur Special Vatting is a Malt Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 45 percent.

The vatting combines three malt whiskies of different age and style: 5 percent 11 year old peated malt, 45 percent 12 year old light malt, and 50 percent 20 year old dark sherry malt. The combination gives a whisky with far greater complexity than a single age statement could hold, and is a clear example of Michel Couvreur's talent for composing rather than simply bottling.

Michel Couvreur began as a wine merchant in Burgundy in 1951 and only found whisky in 1978. Since then, fresh filling - refilling sherry casks the same day they're emptied - has been his signature, and he claimed a 4-5 year old whisky matured this way could rival a 30 year old aged in used casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers a whisper of peat under a blanket of sherry, dried fruit and a warm caramel sweetness from the oldest parts of the vatting.

    Palate

The palate is deep and layered, with sherry and dark chocolate up front, a touch of smoke in the middle, and a light, bright sweetness tying it all together.

    Finish

The finish is long, with lingering notes of dried raisins, a hint of smoke and a last warmth of oak.

    Did you know?

The 20 year old component of the vatting has matured long enough to count as a mature, aged whisky in its own right - yet it makes up only half of the bottle, the rest coming from far younger casks.

  • Bottle of Michel Couvreur The Unexpected No. 2 Single Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1971612

The Unexpected is the name the whisky itself has chosen to describe what a French sherry cask can do to Scotch malt over 10 years.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur The Unexpected No. 2 is a Single Malt Whisky matured in a sherry cask and bottled at 50 percent.

The whisky was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2022 after 10 years of cask maturation, and like the rest of the house range it's matured further via Michel Couvreur's fresh filling method in the cellars of Burgundy. The high strength of 50 percent gives the whisky a power that sets it apart from several of the house's milder bottlings.

Michel Couvreur travelled to Scotland himself to find the casks he believed in, then let them mature further in his own Burgundy cellars - a process that still sets the house apart from almost everyone else in the market today.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is intense with sherry, dark chocolate and dried fruit, spiced with a hint of cinnamon.

    Palate

The palate is powerful and warm, with sherry and caramel up front, supported by a dry, oaky undertone.

    Finish

The finish is long and spicy, with lingering notes of raisin and a last peppery warmth.

  • Bottle of Michel Couvreur Grain Whisky matured in sherry casks
    Item no.: 22227865465-3

Grain whisky rarely gets the spotlight, but at Michel Couvreur even the grain gets the same uncompromising care as the house malt.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur The Unique over 4 Years is a Grain Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 44 percent.

The whisky carries at least 4 years of cask maturation and, like the rest of Couvreur's range, is matured further on fresh sherry casks using the house's fresh filling method in the damp cellars of Bouze-lès-Beaune. Grain whisky is typically lighter and more grain-sweet than malt whisky, but the cask gives it a surprising richness here.

Michel Couvreur travelled to Jerez himself to source his sherry casks, with help from Emilio Lustau, and shipped them - still wet with sherry - to the damp cellars of Burgundy. The village of Bouze-lès-Beaune sits almost symbolically halfway between Jerez and the Scottish Highlands.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is sweet and grainy with notes of vanilla, honey and a hint of ripe apple.

    Palate

The palate is soft and lightly sweet, with caramel and sherry giving unexpected richness to the light grain base.

    Finish

The finish is medium and warm, closing with a sweetness of honey and a hint of spice.

  • Michel Couvreur The Unique Single Malt Whisky 70 cl 44% 44
    Item no.: 22227865465-110

The Unique carries its name for good reason - a whisky that insists on going its own way, from cask to bottle.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur The Unique is a Single Malt Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 44 percent.

The Unique is bottled after roughly 3 years of cask maturation at natural strength via Michel Couvreur's fresh filling method, where young Scotch malt whiskies are refilled onto fresh sherry casks the same day the casks are emptied. This gives a silky character that feels more mature than the relatively few years in cask would otherwise suggest.

Michel Couvreur's story doesn't begin in Scotland but in Burgundy, where he traded wine for decades before whisky drew him in during 1978. His fresh filling method meant the sherry casks never had time to dry out between sherry and whisky, something almost nobody else still does today.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is soft with honey, sherry and ripe apples, spiced with a hint of nutmeg.

    Palate

The palate is silky and round, with sherry and caramel up front, supported by a light nutty dryness.

    Finish

The finish is medium in length, warm and rounded, with a last sweetness of dried apricot.

    Did you know?

Michel Couvreur was unusually particular about his sherry casks and only accepted casks from Jerez that Emilio Lustau himself had selected for him - a detail that still defines the house's whisky today.

    Item no.: 22227865449-7045

Some whisky is built to disappear into something bigger, and some is allowed to stand on its own. This Miltonduff belongs to the latter.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 1982/2023 Adelphi Limited 40 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a first fill sherry hogshead and bottled at cask strength 50.4%.

Distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2023, this whisky has spent 40 years in cask, giving it a light golden colour and a thoroughly old-fashioned elegance. Only 224 bottles were released by independent bottler Adelphi, known for its uncompromising approach to cask selection.

The long maturation has rounded the whisky's character into something velvety, where mineral notes, paraffin and oily lemon meet cooked fruit and a touch of white pepper in the long finish.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma opens with toasted nuts and orange marmalade, while dark chocolate lingers in the background.

    Palate

The palate delivers muscovado sugar and brown sugar, with a hint of spiced oak.

    Investment Potential

High. A 40-year-old single cask whisky from a rarely independently released Miltonduff, limited to just 224 bottles, places this release among the most sought-after from the distillery on the secondary market.

A tribute to the Beam who broke from family tradition and bet on rye instead of bourbon.

    Expert description

Minor Case Sherry Cask Finished Straight Rye Whiskey is an American rye whiskey, bottled at 45%, named after Minor Case Beam, a pioneer in the historic Beam family. In 1883, Minor Case Beam founded his own distillery, M.C. Beam & Co., near the town of Gethsemane, Kentucky, rather than joining the family's main operation. While bourbon was king in Kentucky at the time, Minor Case chose to specialise in rye whiskey. Minor Case is the distillery's modern flagship rye, launched in 2017 by two present-day Beam descendants who reopened Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, near the site where their great-great-grandfather once ran his distillery. The whiskey is finished in sherry casks for around 8 months to add depth and spice.
