Glencadam PX Sherry Cask Finish is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American bourbon casks with a finishing period in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled at 46%.

The main maturation takes place in traditional American oak bourbon casks, where the bright distillery fruit gets room. Only then does the whisky go into selected PX casks, and the short finish is enough to lay dark fruit and chocolate in without erasing the starting point. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

PX casks are the most powerful in the sherry family and are normally used sparingly. On a spirit like Glencadam’s — light, fruit-driven and without much weight of its own — it is a balancing act, and the finish is therefore kept short enough that the whisky is not run over.

Nose

Dried fruits and dark chocolate, with spice and a rich sherry sweetness. Beneath the sweetness sits a brighter fruit note from the bourbon casks.

White port is a rarity in the whisky world. Most port casks that end up in Scotland have held ruby or tawny, and those give dark fruit. White port pulls the other way — towards stone fruit, citrus and something almost floral.

Glencadam White Port Cask Finish is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American ex-bourbon casks with a finishing period in white port casks from Portugal, bottled at 46%.

Main maturation takes place in American oak that previously held bourbon, and the finishing period runs in casks from white port. White port is made from white grapes and is brighter and fresher than the red varieties, which suits the Glencadam expression rather than competing with it. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

The combination is unusual, even among the many cask finish releases out there. White port casks are rarely used for whisky, partly because they are hard to come by and partly because the effect is more subtle than sherry or red port — you need a spirit that can carry a light hand.

Palate

The bottling forms part of The Master’s Anthology, a trio of Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky composed by master blender Rachel Barrie and launched in December 2024. Loch Ardnahoe is the deepest loch on Islay. The water looks as though it carries on downwards without end, which is why the distillery calls the loch infinite. The water in this bottle comes straight from it.

The Expert's Description

Ardnahoe Infinite Loch is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a combination of 1st fill bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 50%. It is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The two cask types each do their own job. The bourbon casks give vanilla, fruit and a bright sweetness, while the Oloroso casks lay in darker fruit and spice. Together with Ardnahoe’s peat smoke that produces a classic Islay profile with more breadth than a purely bourbon matured whisky would have.

The water comes from Loch Ardnahoe right beside the distillery, and the loch is one of the main reasons the site was chosen: plentiful clean, soft water with a natural peat character from the surrounding landscape.

Rare Cask is the story of exactly those casks – and of what happens when someone actually bothers to go looking for them.

Rare Cask has been a permanent part of Macallan's range since 2014, and the name isn't just marketing. Each year, the distillery's Whisky Maker works through thousands of maturing casks on Easter Elchies Estate, and only around one percent make the cut for this series. The chosen casks are married into a vatting of roughly 50 sherry-seasoned oak casks, aged between 12 and 18 years, with no single age statement on the bottle itself. It's the composition, not one number on the label, that defines the character.

Nothing is added to dress up the colour, either. The deep, ruby-mahogany shade is entirely natural and comes from the wood alone – something Macallan itself points to as one of the two pillars the whole Rare Cask series is built on, alongside the sherry-seasoned casks themselves.

Signatory Vintage has been bottling single malt since 1988 and bought Edradour distillery in 2002, where the warehouses sit today. Andrew Symington built the company on one simple principle: buy the casks early, leave them alone for a long time, and do as little as possible to them before bottling.

Sauternes casks are expensive and rare because the wine itself is. The châteaux in Bordeaux need their barriques and do not readily sell them on. When one nonetheless ends up on a west Scottish peninsula, it is worth noticing.

Ardnamurchan Sauternes Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in selected Sauternes wine casks, bottled at 50% in 2024.

Sauternes is the sweetest of the white wines of Bordeaux, made from grapes affected by noble rot. The casks add a subtle sweetness and a complexity that settles over the classic Highland malt profile without drowning it: honey, dried fruit and a lightly spiced close.

The natural colour and unfiltered character preserve the whisky’s authentic flavour, and at 50% there is body enough to carry both the wine cask sweetness and Ardnamurchan’s own maritime edge.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Nectarines and sweet pastry first, with honey and candied citrus peel behind. A rich waxiness sits beneath it all, and a light peat smoke and saline maritime note push through.

Palate

Rich notes of honey and dried fruit open, then a lightly spiced warmth and a dry oak note arrive. The sweetness is balanced rather than dominant, and at 50% the texture is full and nuanced the whole way.

Finish

Medium to long. Honey, spice and a dry close where the maritime salinity lingers beneath the sweetness.

Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie Display Bottle is an empty 4.5-litre magnum bottle with no content, designed purely as a display and decoration piece.

The bottle is a full-scale replica of The Classic Laddie's packaging, but entirely without whisky. It's typically used in retail settings or bars, or in a private collection, as a visual centrepiece showing Bruichladdich's classic label and bottle shape at large scale.

At around 42 centimetres tall it's hard to miss, and that same display quality makes it popular among whisky collectors who want Bruichladdich's look on a grand scale without opening an equivalent-sized bottle of actual whisky.

Tomatin 29 år The Chess Malt Collection D1 Single Highland Malt Whisky 70 cl 54,9% is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Refill hogshead and bottled at 54,9%.

This 29-year-old Tomatin was distilled in November 1994 and bottled in March 2024 from a refill hogshead, which yielded just 149 bottles from the entire cask.

Nose

Tropical fruit, mango and a light waxy sweetness.

Palate

Full and complex with honey, sandalwood and spiced oak.
