Glendronach and smoke is not an obvious combination. The distillery has built its whole name on sherry, and peated spirit is something it makes rarely. Ode to The Embers is one of the few times the two meet in the same bottle.

Glendronach Ode to The Embers is a peated Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled at 48.4%.

Most of the maturation takes place in oloroso casks with a share of Pedro Ximénez, and that is a deliberate build: the oloroso gives the dryness the smoke can play against, while the PX rounds off the sharp edges. The whisky carries no age statement, because the composition was chosen by cask rather than by year.

The bottling is the peated one of the three in The Master’s Anthology, composed by master blender Rachel Barrie and launched in December 2024. The series is intended as three different answers to the same question — what sherry casks can actually be used for.

Tasting notes

Nose

Smoked malt and glowing charcoal, with dark fruit and sherry behind. There is an oily note beneath the smoke that does not resemble Islay.

Palate

Full and smoky. Dried fruit and nuts from the sherry casks meet an earthy, warm smoke, and the PX share lays in a sweetness that holds it all together.

Finish

Long. Smoke and dark fruit giving way slowly to a dry, spiced close with a trace of ash.

Frequently asked questions about Glendronach Ode to The Embers

How peated is it?

Medium. The smoke is clear, but it sits beneath the sherry rather than leading, and it is earthy and warm rather than medicinal. It is a different kind of smoke from the one you meet on Islay.

Why does Glendronach make peated whisky at all?

Because the distillery distils peated malt in spells for individual releases. It is not the core business of the house, and precisely for that reason the smoky releases are something enthusiasts watch for. See the other smoky styles in our Scotch Whisky selection.

How do smoke and sherry work together?

Surprisingly well when the casks are chosen right. Oloroso is dry and nutty and gives the smoke something to lean on, while PX lays in a sweetness that softens the ashy edge. Without the PX share the whisky would be markedly tauter.

How does it differ from Traditionally Peated?

The casks. Traditionally Peated uses PX, oloroso and used port casks, while Embers sticks to the two sherry types. The port casks give Traditionally Peated a fruitier direction, where Embers is drier and more ash-driven.

Why does it carry no age statement?

Because Rachel Barrie built it by cask type rather than by year. An age statement would have to follow the youngest cask and would say less about the whisky than the combination of smoke and sherry does.

Should I add water?

Try it neat first. At 48.4% the balance between smoke and sherry is good as it stands, and too much water separates the two. A single drop can open the fruit, but do not go further.

Who does it suit?

Someone who likes sherried whisky and wants to try what smoke does to it. If you are used to Islay you will find the smoke here milder and more integrated. If you are used to Glendronach, it is a surprise.
