    Expert Description

Appleton Estate 8 Year Reserve Blend is a Jamaica Rum, a blend of pot and column still rums from Appleton Estate, aged a minimum of 8 years and bottled at 43%.

All rums in the blend are distilled and aged on the same estate in Jamaica's Nassau Valley, where the limestone-rich soils and tropical climate give the rum its distinctive terroir. • Hampden Estate Rum Fire bottle of clear Jamaican rum with black label
    Item no.: 22227865395-888875

Not a single cask is involved here. Only a long, wild fermentation in the humid heat of Trelawny, a copper pot still, and a spirit that goes into the bottle without a drop of colouring. Open it and the aroma has filled the room before the glass is poured.

    The expert's description

Hampden Estate Rum Fire Jamaican White Overproof Rum 70 cl 63% is an unaged Jamaican White Overproof Rum distilled from molasses in a pot still and bottled at 63%.

Hampden Estate sits in Trelawny on the north coast of Jamaica, a short way from Falmouth, and rum has been made on the estate since 1753. The distillery is known for its high ester style, meaning the aroma compounds that give Jamaican rum its penetrating character of overripe fruit and varnish. Fermentation runs for weeks rather than days, it is started by wild yeast instead of a cultured strain, and it is fed with dunder and acidified organic matter from the estate's own pits.

Rum Fire is the distillery's unaged bottling and the most direct route into that character. It is clear because it has never seen the inside of a cask, and nothing has been added, neither sugar nor colouring. The 63% is not a stunt but the strength the style asks for, carrying the aromatics all the way through a drink instead of drowning in ice and lime.

Behind a bar it is a tool. A Daiquiri built on Rum Fire tastes nothing like one built on a light white rum: pineapple, banana and a saline edge, and it stays put. A small measure goes a long way.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Overripe banana and pineapple arrive at once, closely followed by something like varnish and freshly cut timber. Underneath sits a saline note, close to olives in brine.

    Palate

Oily and huge. Tropical fruit first, then a peppery warmth spreading out, and a mineral, almost chalky base. The alcohol is obvious, yet it carries rather than burns.

    Finish

Long and warm with the fruit hanging on. A dry, salty tone closes it out and keeps reminding you where it came from.

    Did you know?

Hampden Estate still keeps its muck pits alive, trenches of acidified organic matter drawn on to feed the fermentation. It is a nineteenth century technique that almost every other distillery abandoned long ago, and it is a large part of why the rum from here smells so much louder than anything else.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted almond and hazelnut followed by orange peel, vanilla and hints of roasted coffee and molasses, with allspice and cloves and a restrained hogo character.

    Palate

Rich molasses hits first, followed by clove-studded orange, cinnamon, almonds, apricot and plums, while brown sugar, orange curacao, guava and ginger add depth, supported by delicate fennel and coriander seed.

Because the rum spent all 16 years maturing in Scotland's temperate climate after being shipped from Jamaica, it develops a different, more restrained cask influence than rum matured entirely in the tropics. Long Pond is known for its "funky", ester-rich style, and the long maturation gives this particular release a complexity that draws on the best of both climates.

A cask whose origin remains a secret. Compagnie des Indes chose to call this Jamaican rum "Secrete" because the distillery behind it doesn't want to be named, but the flavour speaks its own, unmistakable language.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes 2007/2017 Secrete 9 Year is a Jamaica Rum from a single cask, distilled in 2007, bottled in 2017 at 54.1%.

The rum is bottled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes, founded in 2014 by Florent Beuchet with the aim of showcasing rum's diversity through authentic, characterful single casks from around the world. This Jamaican edition comes from a cask marked "Secrete", as the distillery behind it is undisclosed, a practice several Jamaican distilleries use to protect their identity from competitors. The rum is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour or sugar, from an outturn of 238 bottles.

The typical Jamaican "funky" character, with its pronounced ester profile, is clear in this rum, where tropical cask ageing has produced a powerful, fruity intensity.

    Item no.: 22227865416-18121

Some rums are made to resemble something familiar. Oktoberum is made to surprise, a Jamaican rum sent through three completely unexpected cask types.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum is a Blended Rum from Jamaica, at least 5 years old and bottled at 46%.

The rum is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes from several Jamaican rums, all at least 5 years old. What sets Oktoberum apart is the extra maturation the blend undergoes: first five years in casks that previously held Macvin and Vin Jaune, then further maturation in whisky casks, and finally a period in beer casks. The three shifting cask types give the rum a golden, slightly hazy appearance and a character that is harder to pin down than most standard expressions from the island.

    Tasting notes

    Item no.: 22227865377-8154

Two of Jamaica's most historic distilleries meet in this rum, which then travels to France to finish its maturation in cognac casks.

    Expert Description

Plantation Xaymaca Special Dry is a Jamaican Rum matured in two stages, bottled at 43%.

The rum is a blend of two 100% pot still distillates from Jamaica's Long Pond and Clarendon distilleries. After the initial maturation in bourbon casks in Jamaica, the rum travels to southwestern France, where it is finished in casks from the renowned cognac house Ferrand. This two-stage maturation gives the rum its characteristic "hogo", the funky, intense ester profile that Jamaican pot still rum is known for, while the cognac casks add a softer, more rounded dimension.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful and pungent with stewed banana, sour kiwi and dark cherry, complex and slightly smoky, along with a fullness of fruity, herbal and sour notes, pastry-like vanilla, cooked banana, bitter orange peel and ripe pineapple.

    Palate

A rich, fatty palate opening with green apple and sharp kiwi, then a deep funky character releasing ripe banana, a dry, floral and fruitier profile of rosewater, soursop, pear, white grapes, apricot and sugar-apple, complemented by coconut milk, balsam, allspice, bread and nuts.

    Expert Description

    Expert Description

Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum is a Jamaica Rum from pot still distillate and bottled at 57%.

The rum consists entirely of Wedderburn and Plummer pot still marks, two classic, high-ester Jamaican styles known for caramelised banana, exotic fruit and an earthy, funky finish. The brand is produced by Hayman Distillers, which considers itself the successor to the historic houses Smith & Tyers and White Cross, which once operated side by side for generations.

At 57% and with its powerful, pot still-driven character, Smith & Cross is built to carry through even the most flavour-intense tiki cocktails without drowning in ice, fruit and syrup.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful varnish and glue-like aroma with a hint of copper, overripe banana, leather, spice and molasses.

    Palate

Almost buttery start that quickly explodes into tobacco, tropical fruit, cinnamon and clove.

    Finish

Surprisingly creamy with a lingering, spiced warmth and underlying tinned pineapple and tropical fruit.
