    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278347

A Norwegian king in a kilt is not the first thing you associate with Islay. But Magnus Barelegs fought alongside the Celts in the late 1000s, and he has lent his name to a whisky just as unafraid of standing out.

    Expert description

Bårelegs Battle Axe is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 55.7% without chill filtration, released as a small batch.

Behind the brand stand the Islay Boys, Donald MacKenzie from Port Charlotte and Mackay Smith from Portnahaven. Both are from the island and started blending and bottling whisky themselves with the aim of making something that tasted of Islay without costing a fortune in marketing.

Battle Axe is the most powerful of the expressions in the range and is bottled at high strength without filtration. The peat is present but held back in favour of fruit from the cask, which makes the profile different from the classic smoke monsters of the island's south coast.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pear and peach with nutty notes from old oak and a fine layer of peat smoke underneath.

    Palate

Round and full with date, walnut and citrus blossom. The smoke arrives late and never takes over.

Some whiskies try to say everything at once. And then there is Stauning Rye – a whisky that just is what it is. Rye. West Jutland. Floor-malted on their own lofts. Matured until it is ready.

    Expert description

Stauning Rye Floor Malted is a Danish Rye Whisky bottled at 48%. Stauning Whisky was founded in 2005 by nine friends in Skjern, West Jutland. Rye is the distillery's original expression and flagship from the very beginning. Made from locally grown rye and floor-malted barley – all malted on their own lofts. "Floor Malted" in the name is not a marketing gimmick: it is a genuine description of a technique they use every single day. Matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and spiced rye, light honey and a hint of blossom. Bread and soft vanilla. Not heavy, but with substance.

    Palate

Spiced and direct. Rye grain and pepper, followed by sweet maltiness and light caramel. A trace of dried fruit from the sherry casks.

    Finish

Medium length and spiced. The rye spice persists, followed by a clean, gentle sweetness.

  • Finlaggan Red Wine Finish Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 2222755554-887412

Red wine casks are rare in Scotch whisky, and there is a reason for that. The tannins can turn a whisky bitter and dry if you are not careful. Here they are used to pull the smoke towards fruit instead.

    The expert description

Finlaggan Red Wine Finish is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in red wine casks, bottled at 46%.

The malt comes from an undisclosed Islay distillery, and The Vintage Malt Whisky Company moved it into red wine wood at the end. Where a port cask gives sweet, concentrated fruit, the red wine cask gives something drier and more grapey, plum, berry and a light tannin edge that keeps the sweetness in place.

The result is the most fruit-driven of the Finlaggan finishes, but also the one where the smoke is allowed to stay in front. It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without added colour.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lovely peat smoke with sweet red berries, dried fruit, oak and vanilla behind it.

    Palate

Salted and smoky with notes of sweet fruit, plum jam, red grapes, orange marmalade and berries.

    Finish

Sweet malt notes and grape skin, while the bonfire smoke lingers long afterwards.

Red wine casks are used far less often than sherry and bourbon wood in Scotch whisky. Wine casks are built thinner and have not held strong spirit before, which makes them less predictable, and the tannins can leave the whisky dry and tight if the cask is allowed to work too long.

There is Islay whisky you have to work up to. This is not one of them. Original is the way into the range and into the island, peat, salt and malt in the most direct form it can be done.

    The expert description

Finlaggan Original is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The malt comes from an undisclosed Islay distillery and The Vintage Malt Whisky Company of Glasgow handles the bottling. It is a model where the distillery sells casks on without wanting its name on the label, and in return you get an island malt on a far more straightforward shelf than the official releases occupy.

The bourbon wood provides the bright frame and 40% keeps it light. This is not a whisky trying to impress. It is trying to be a good Islay dram, and it succeeds.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peat smoke first, then malt and a pale sweetness, with a seaweed and salt note that recalls a coastline a couple of hundred metres away.

    Palate

Direct and malty. The smoke carries while caramel and apple sit beneath, and a lightly peppered edge rises towards the close.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and smoky with a final scatter of salt.

The peat on Islay is not like mainland peat. The island bogs formed close to the sea out of moss, heather and seaweed, and that is why Islay smoke carries the salted, almost iodine-like note a Highland peat never gives.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972593

Jamaican rum in a Scottish cask is not an obvious combination, which is probably why it works. The rum wood brings a tropical sweetness that meets the peat smoke somewhere neither of them expected to end up.

    The expert's description

BenRiach The Smoky Ten 10 years is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky matured in bourbon casks, Jamaican rum casks and virgin oak and bottled at 46 %.

The bottling uses the peated spirit of the distillery, made only in defined periods each year. Three cask types are involved: bourbon gives vanilla, Jamaican rum adds tropical fruit and sweetness, and virgin oak lays spice and structure on top.

The combination of smoke and rum wood is rare in Scotch whisky and makes the bottling an obvious way in for anyone wanting to try peated malt without starting on the heaviest Islay bottles. The smoke reads aromatic rather than medicinal.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh fruit, honey and toasted oak with an aromatic note of smoke on top.

    Palate

Fruit, aromatic smoky sweetness and toasted oak. The rum casks give a tropical edge that rounds the smoke off.

If a distillery may send only one bottle out into the world, this is it. The Original Ten is the BenRiach signature written down, and everything else in the range relates to it in one way or another.

    The expert's description

BenRiach The Original Ten 10 years is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky matured in bourbon casks, sherry casks and virgin oak and bottled at 43 %.

Three cask types is unusual for an entry bottle. The bourbon wood gives vanilla and bright fruit, the sherry adds sweetness and depth, and virgin oak lays spice and structure on top. The composition was created by Master Blender Rachel Barrie as part of the range overhaul that followed the Brown-Forman takeover.

There is a subtle suggestion of smoke in the whisky. BenRiach produces both unpeated and peated spirit, and a small share of the peated finds its way into the core bottling of the house without turning it into a smoky whisky.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh fruit, honey and toasted oak with a summer golden lightness.

David Nicholson Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a reserve edition of the brand's classic wheated recipe, bottled at 50%. David Nicholson started in 1843 as a grocer who distilled his own bourbon recipe in the back room of his general store in St. Louis. The recipe, a wheated mash bill, was passed down unaltered through generations, and later the brand's iconic '43' bourbon was hand-crafted by none other than Julian 'Pappy' Van Winkle and W.L. Weller at the Stitzel distillery. The Van Winkle family owned the brand until 2000, when it was acquired by Luxco.

    The Expert's Description

Auchroisk 2009/2019 Hepburns Choice 10 Years Old is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky finished in a rum cask and bottled at 46%. The cask gave 182 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

A rum cask finish typically lasts from a few months to a couple of years. The rum’s sugarcane character lays molasses, brown sugar and baked fruit over the whisky’s own profile, without removing the underlying malt character.

Hepburns Choice is Hunter Laing’s range of single casks from younger whisky, often with a finish. Auchroisk was built in 1974 to supply malt for the J&B blend, and the distillery’s bright, citrus-driven style gives the rum cask something to work with.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweetness first, with molasses and brown sugar clearly to the fore. Vanilla, banana and a light citrus note from the spirit sit beneath.

    Palate

Sweet and full. Molasses and baked banana open, then vanilla, a lightly spiced oak note and a dry close to the sweetness arrive. At 46% the body is good, and the whisky holds its balance.

    Finish

Medium and sweet. Molasses, vanilla and a dry, lightly spiced close.

Off the coast of Brittany lies a small archipelago called Triagoz - and it has lent its name to one of Warenghem's most distinctive bottlings.

    Expert's description

Armorik Triagoz 2nd Edition Lightly Peated is a Single Breton Malt Whisky from the Warenghem distillery, bottled at 46 percent.

The whisky is made from Breton barley and French wheat and carries a lightly peated character before maturing further on bourbon casks. 2,500 bottles were filled of this release, and the whisky is non-chill filtered, preserving more of the natural oils and aromas from distillation.

Warenghem is based in Lannion in northern Brittany, where the Atlantic humidity leaves its mark on maturation. The Triagoz series is named after a small archipelago off the Breton coast and draws its smoky character from locally sourced peat.

    Item no.: 22227865365-78790

Nine years on first fill sherry casks is not a long time — but it is enough when the wood is this active. There is a youthful energy here that older bottlings rarely have.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2007/2016 James Eadie 9 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in first fill Sherry Butts and bottled at 46 %.

The release is a small batch from two first fill sherry casks, distilled in 2007 and emptied in 2016. It produced 1,308 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

James Eadie is a name with roots back to 1854, when the brewer James Eadie began blending whisky in Burton upon Trent. The brand was revived by his great-great-grandson in 2015 and today bottles single cask and small batch releases with unusual transparency about cask type and origin.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Crisp and fruity with yellow apple, mango and cream toffee. The sherry shows as dried fig rather than dark sweetness.

    Palate

Sweetness from the first sip, quickly followed by malt, vanilla and white pepper. Apricot and a hint of cinnamon give it breadth, and the 46 % holds it all together.

    Expert Review

With its young age, Wee Beastie is completely untamed in its smoky character, without the rounding-off that extra years of maturation would otherwise bring. That makes it the most uncompromising and direct introduction to Ardbeg's style, carrying a ppm content of 50-55.

    Item no.: 22227865457-122

Port casks in a Glendronach. It is not something the distillery does often, and together with the peat it makes Traditionally Peated the most unusual bottle in the permanent range.

    The expert's description

Glendronach Traditionally Peated is a peated Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks along with used port casks, bottled at 48%.

The combination of three cask types is chosen to give the smoke something to play against. PX lays in sweetness, oloroso gives the nuttiness and dryness, and the port casks add a red fruit note found nowhere else in the range. The whisky carries no age statement.

The smoke here does not resemble Islay. There is no iodine or seaweed, but instead a dry, earthy peat smoke that sits beneath the fruit rather than on top of it. The bottling reached the market in 2019 and was composed by master blender Rachel Barrie.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peat smoke and dark fruit, with raisin and a trace of red berry from the port casks. There is a dry, almost dusty spice note behind.

    Palate

Full and smoky. The dried fruit and nuts of the sherry meet an earthy smoke, while the port casks lay in a red, lightly tart fruit that keeps the whisky from turning heavy.

    Finish

Long. Smoke, nuts and dark fruit drying slowly into a spiced close.

  • Finlaggan Sherry Finish Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865426-612

Sherry and peat smoke are the oldest pairing in Scotch whisky. The dark fruit settles like a blanket over the ash, and the result has been a favourite since somebody first happened to do it.

    The expert description

Finlaggan Sherry Finish is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in sherry casks, bottled at 46%.

The base whisky is the same peated Islay malt from an undisclosed distillery that the rest of the range is built on. The Vintage Malt Whisky Company has given it a closing spell in sherry wood, and that pulls it in a darker and fuller direction than either Original or the other finishes.

Sherry casks are the most used partner for smoke for a reason: raisin, fig and dark chocolate carry enough weight to meet the peat without either side disappearing. The whisky is bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without colouring.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peat smoke and dark dried fruit, with raisin, a touch of fig and a light nutty note from the wood.

    Palate

Full and sweet with raisin and dark chocolate in front, while the smoke works its way up from below and lays salt and ash beneath the sweetness.

    Item no.: 22227865426-611

Port and peat smoke ought not to work together. One is sweet and grapey, the other ashy and salty. The combination has nonetheless become one of the most used in modern Islay whisky, and here is why.

    The expert description

Finlaggan Port Finish is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in port casks, bottled at 46%.

The malt comes from an undisclosed Islay distillery, and The Vintage Malt Whisky Company has given it a spell in port wood after the main maturation. The port leaves red berries and a grapey sweetness that settle on top of the smoke rather than mixing into it, and that layering is the entire point of a finish.

At 46% the whisky has enough body to carry both, and it is neither chill filtered nor coloured. The reddish tone in the glass comes from the wood alone.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Smoky and medicinal peat first, with a clear touch of red berries and grapes behind.

    Palate

Plenty of port sweetness with the smoke lying underneath. Raisin, pepper, leather and red berries unfold as it goes.

A port cask, a pipe, holds around 550 to 650 litres, making it far larger than the bourbon casks the whisky sat in first. That means a port finish works more slowly than you might think, taking months where a small cask would have done the job in weeks.

  • Finlaggan Eilean Mor Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865426-610

Eilean Mòr means the big island in Gaelic, and it is precisely that islet in Loch Finlaggan where the Lords of the Isles had their seat. The whisky is the more considered of the Finlaggan bottles, still peated but with the reins on.

    The expert description

Finlaggan Eilean Mor is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46% in small batch.

The Vintage Malt Whisky Company of Glasgow stands behind the whole Finlaggan range, and the malt comes from an Islay distillery that is not named. Eilean Mor sits a level above the basic releases: the strength is raised to 46% and bottling happens in smaller runs rather than continuously.

Those extra points do more than the number suggests. The smoke gains carrying power, the texture turns fuller, and the light oiliness that marks Islay malt comes through more clearly than in the standard releases at 40%. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and without colouring.

Sweet peat smoke with medicinal notes and a touch of sea salt.

Full bodied with spicy peat smoke, tar and iodine, a light oiliness and a sweet malt sitting underneath it all.

    Finish

The smoke falls back to embers. Long and slightly drying.

    Did you know?

The Vintage Malt Whisky Company owns several brands that all stand for unnamed distilleries, Finlaggan from Islay among them and Tantallan from the Highlands alongside it. The model gives them access to casks they could never otherwise buy, in exchange for keeping quiet about where they came from.
