While the house's Tawny range is known for years spent in wood, Ruby takes the opposite path: a short spell in tank, bottled while the fruit is still at its ripest and juiciest. Martha's Fine Ruby Port is the most direct bottle in the range, deep cherry-red and built without detours.
Expert's Description
Martha's Fine Ruby Port is a Portuguese Ruby Port from the Douro Valley, matured in stainless steel and bottled at 19.5%.
The grapes are pressed and fermented quickly, after which the wine rests in stainless steel for typically two to three years, far shorter than a Tawny. That halts the slow oxidation that would otherwise give amber tones, keeping instead the deep, near-opaque red colour and fresh berry fruit.
Martha's Wine & Spirits traces back to 1727, when the family settled as grape growers in the Baixo Corgo district of the Douro Valley. Across generations the family has farmed the terraced slopes, and Ruby is the house's most accessible and direct expression of that legacy.
The wine is a blend of traditional Douro grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, harvested from vineyards around Baixo Corgo, where the warm, dry climate produces ripe, powerful berries.

Did You Know?
The name Ruby comes from its colour, reminiscent of the gemstone. To keep that deep red hue and fresh berry character, this style is deliberately bottled early, the shorter the time in tank, the more the flavour resembles freshly pressed grape juice rather than the dried fruit of an aged Tawny.
