Ten years is a long time to wait for a glass of wine, but that is exactly what this bottle has been given. Martha's 10 Year Old Tawny Port is the entry point to the house's age-declared series, deep amber and shaped by a decade in wood.

    Expert's Description

Martha's 10 Year Old Tawny Port is a Portuguese age-declared Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, matured in oak casks for an average of 10 years and bottled at 19.5%.

The "10 Year Old" designation is not a vintage but an average of the casks that make up the final blend, approved by the Portuguese regulator IVDP after an official tasting. Some casks are older, some younger, but the combined result has to match the character expected of a ten-year Tawny.

Martha's Wine & Spirits traces back to 1727 in Baixo Corgo, where the family has grown grapes for six generations and later put its own name on the Port it produces. The age-declared Tawny series is what the house is best known for and has won awards for.

The wine is a blend of traditional Douro grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, which change over the years in wood from fresh berry fruit to dried fruit and spice.

    Did You Know?

The age on a Tawny label is not just a claim by the producer. An official tasting panel at IVDP has to confirm that the wine genuinely tastes of the stated age before a bottle is allowed to say 10 years old, a level of control that does not exist for most other Port styles.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martha's 10 Year Old Tawny Port

What does Martha's 10 Year Old Tawny Port taste like?
