When this wine was first laid down, an entirely different generation of the Martha family was running the cellar. 40 years later, the result is one of the house's rarest bottles, a Port that has spent a working lifetime becoming what it is.

    Expert's Description

Martha's 40 Year Old Tawny Port is a Portuguese age-declared Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, matured in oak casks for an average of 40 years and bottled at 20%.

After four decades in wood, only a fraction of the original volume remains, concentrated into a deep, golden wine of enormous complexity. Only a small part of what the house lays down each year is ever allowed to rest for that long.

Martha's Wine & Spirits traces back to 1727, when the family settled as grape growers in Baixo Corgo. Across six generations the family has refined exactly this discipline, and 40 years is the top level of the house's age-declared Tawny series.

The designation is approved by the Portuguese regulator IVDP after an official tasting, and the bottle has earned international recognition along the way.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Opulent aromas of dried fruit, honey and a hint of oak, with a deep golden character.

    Palate

Enormously complex and velvety, with layer upon layer of caramelised fruit, nuts and spice.

    Finish

Very long and elegant, unforgettable in its balance between sweetness and dryness.

    Investment Potential

A 40 Year Old Tawny sits at the very rare end of the Port spectrum and is highly sought after among collectors and Port enthusiasts. The volume that ever reaches this age is very limited, making the bottle a genuine collector's item rather than an everyday pour.

    Did You Know?

Only a vanishing share of what is laid down in a given year ends up as a 40 Year Old Tawny. The rest is sold along the way as younger categories, while the best casks are left untouched for decades as generations of cellar masters hand over the watch.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martha's 40 Year Old Tawny Port

What does Martha's 40 Year Old Tawny Port taste like?

It tastes enormously complex and velvety, with layers of caramelised fruit, honey, nuts and oak spice, closing with a very long, elegant finish.

Is Martha's 40 Year Old Tawny Port worth investing in?

It sits at the rarest end of the house's range, since only a limited number of casks ever reach this age. That makes the bottle sought after among collectors, beyond the pure drinking experience.

Why is a 40 Year Old Tawny so rare?

Because only a small part of what is laid down is allowed to rest for four decades, while the rest is sold or blended into younger bottles along the way. At the same time, a large share of the volume evaporates through the wood over the years.

At what temperature should a 40 Year Old Tawny be served?

Best at 14-16°C, where the complex notes of dried fruit and spice come through most clearly.

How long does an opened bottle of 40 Year Old Tawny keep?

Thanks to the extreme concentration after four decades in wood, an opened bottle keeps for several months if stored cool and dark.

What does "40 Year Old" officially mean on the label?

It is an age statement approved by the Portuguese regulator IVDP after an official tasting, confirming the character in the glass matches the 40 years stated.
