White Port lives in the shadow of its red sibling, but in Baixo Corgo the Martha family has made it for generations. Fine White is the house's young, pale expression, made for drinking cold, ideally with tonic and plenty of ice.

    Expert's Description

Martha's Fine White Port is a Portuguese White Port from the Douro Valley, matured in stainless steel and bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made exclusively from white grape varieties grown in the Douro and fermented briefly in stainless steel, which preserves its pale straw colour and fresh fruit. Unlike Tawny Port, which spends years maturing in wood, Fine White is made to be drunk young.

Martha's Wine & Spirits traces its roots back to 1727, when the family settled as grape growers in Baixo Corgo. Fine White is the house's entry point into the white category, a Port with no age statement, built on fresh fruit rather than wood character.

The style is delicate compared to the house's older Tawny range, but carries the same craftsmanship, minus the years spent in barrel.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martha's Fine White Port

What does Martha's Fine White Port taste like?

It tastes fresh and lightly sweet, with notes of honey, ripe apple and a hint of citrus peel. The acidity keeps it lively, so it never feels heavy or cloying.

Should white Port be served chilled?

Yes, it is best served cold, ideally at 6-8°C, and works well over ice too. The chill lifts its freshness and makes it more refreshing to drink.

Can I make a Port Tonic with Martha's Fine White Port?

Yes, white Port is the classic base for a Port Tonic. Mix with tonic water, ice and a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint for a light, refreshing drink.

How long does an opened bottle of white Port keep?

An opened bottle should be enjoyed within one to two weeks, stored cool with the cork back in, as its fresh style fades faster than an aged tawny.

Does Martha's Fine White Port pair well with food?

It pairs nicely with white cheeses, almonds and light starters, and also works well as a light dessert wine with fruit.

Where does Martha's Fine White Port come from?

It comes from the Martha family's vineyards in Baixo Corgo in the Douro Valley, where the family has grown grapes since 1727.
