SBS 1423 Rum

A number from an old ship's logbook became the name for an entire rum series. SBS, Single Barrel Selection, is Scottish spirits group 1423's answer to bringing the whisky world's single-cask philosophy across to rum from across the Caribbean and South America. Each cask travels its own path from distillery to bottle, unfiltered and often at cask strength, so none of the original character is lost along the way.

  • Bottle of SBS 1423 Single Barrel Selection Philippines rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-249

Filipino rum rarely appears on Danish shelves - this single cask release is a chance to taste a country most rum lovers have never encountered.

    Expert Description

SBS 2019/2023 1423 Single Barrel Selection 4 Year Philippines Rum is a Single Cask Rum from the Philippines, 4 years old, double matured on bourbon and virgin oak casks, bottled at 57%.

The rum was distilled in 2019 and bottled in August 2023 from a single cask, non-chill filtered and without added colour. It was first matured on a bourbon cask and then moved onto a virgin oak cask, giving a double maturation profile with both classic bourbon sweetness and the more aggressive, spicy character of the unused oak. The release is exclusive to the Danish market and limited to 312 bottles.

With Filipino rum as its base, this is a rare opportunity to taste a style that differs markedly from the more familiar Caribbean rums.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Spiced wood, vanilla and an exotic fruitiness.

    Palate

Full-bodied and powerful, with sweetness from the bourbon cask and sharp spice notes from the oak.

    Finish

    Long, dry and spicy.

    Expert Description

SBS 2021/2023 Gift Set 1423 Single Barrel Selection Jamaica Rum is a set of four Rums from Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica, 2 years old, bottled on four different types of virgin oak casks.

The set contains four 20 cl bottles from the 1423 Single Barrel Selection range, all distilled at Worthy Park Estate in 2021 and bottled in 2023. The rum is un-chillfiltered and matured on virgin oak casks of Spanish, Danish, French and American origin respectively - four casks, each leaving a completely distinct mark on the powerful Jamaican rum. Worthy Park is known for high ester levels of up to 800 g/hL AA, giving the rum its characteristic, intense fruitiness.

The gift set offers a unique opportunity to taste your way through how four different oaks influence the same distillate - a small lesson in the importance of the cask, straight in the glass.

  • Bottle of SBS Origin Selection Cane Juice Jamaica white rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-252

Jamaica is known for molasses-heavy, ester-bomb rum - this bottle does something entirely different and goes straight to fresh cane juice.

    Expert Description

SBS 2022/2023 Origin Selection Cane Juice 1423 Jamaica Rum is a white Rum from a single estate in Jamaica, roughly 1 year old, distilled directly from fresh sugarcane juice, bottled at 57%.

According to 1423, this release is the first commercially available example of a pure cane juice rum from Jamaica - distilled directly from fresh, unpressed sugarcane juice rather than the molasses Jamaica is traditionally known for. The rum comes from a single estate, was distilled in 2022 and bottled in 2023 with minimal cask influence, letting the fresh cane juice take centre stage.

The result is markedly different from the powerful, funky Jamaican style most people know - a brighter, greener and more direct rum, showing a completely different side of the country's rum tradition.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh, green cane juice, citrus and a hint of grass.

    Expert Description

SBS 2022/2023 Origin Selection Red Cane 1423 Guadeloupe Rum is a white Rum from Guadeloupe, roughly 1 year old, column distilled from Red Cane sugarcane, bottled at 57%.

The rum is part of 1423s Origin Selection, a range that puts the focus on the character of a single sugarcane variety rather than long cask ageing. This release is made from Red Cane, a specific sugarcane variety grown in Guadeloupe, distilled in 2022 and bottled in 2023 without significant cask influence. The result is a rum that shows the pure, earthy and lightly spiced character of the cane without being masked by oak and vanilla.

With its high strength and young age, this is a rum for those who want to taste terroir over wood.

    Item no.: 059555-7744

From the other side of the world, far from the Caribbean's familiar rum landscape, S.B.S. brings home a single cask from Fiji and reserves it for Danish rum lovers alone.

    Expert Description

SBS Fiji 2020/2025 is a Single Barrel Selection Dark Rum from Fiji, aged in a Virgin Oak cask for 5 years and bottled at 55%.

The rum is pot still distilled in 2020 and bottled by the Danish independent rum house 1423 under their S.B.S. (Single Barrel Selection) series in February 2025. It is molasses-based and matured alone in a single Virgin Oak cask, adding extra depth and spice character. The rum is non-chill filtered, preserving its rich, complex flavour profile.

With only 384 bottles worldwide, bottled exclusively for the Danish market, this is a rare chance to taste a single-cask Fiji rum.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Complex and inviting, with ripe melon and pear, toasted nuts and a subtle hint of green olives.

    Palate

Fruity and spiced with fine notes of vanilla and dried fruit in a round, well-balanced profile.

    Finish

At Worthy Park Estate, right in the middle of Jamaica, molasses gets boiled down into a rum so heavy on esters it practically announces itself from across the room. That's the raw spirit four different virgin oak casks have since been left to shape, each in its own way, and this bottle is the American one.

    The Expert's Description

SBS Jamaica 2021 WPE American Virgin Oak is a Jamaica Rum distilled at Worthy Park Estate and bottled at cask strength, 61.2%, from an American Virgin Oak cask.

This bottle is one quarter of 1423's "Experimental Cask Series" – a box of four identical 20 cl bottles drawn from the same molasses-based distillate, where each bottle was instead matured in its own virgin oak cask: Spanish, Danish, French and American. The idea is simple and rather clever: same raw rum, same year of distillation, but four different origins of oak, so you can taste exactly what the wood itself does to the spirit without the distillery's style or age getting in the way.

The WPE mark signals that the rum comes from Worthy Park's heaviest ester profile, the style the distillery is best known for among rum enthusiasts. The spirit ran through a copper pot still in 2021 and was then left to rest in the American Virgin Oak cask until bottling in August 2023, unfiltered and with nothing added.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Overripe banana and pineapple meet a clear ester funk, with a sweet vanilla note from the fresh oak sitting just underneath.

    Palate

Tropical fruit and a lightly fermented sweetness, followed by spiced wood and a warm, peppery edge from the virgin timber.

    Finish

Toasted and wood-driven, with a lingering ester sweetness that stays in the mouth.

In the middle of Jamaica, where sugar cane fields roll up the hills around Lluidas Vale, sits a distillery that has been making rum since the 1740s – with one long pause along the way. Today Worthy Park is back in full swing, and this bottle is the result of a small Danish experiment: what happens when the exact same rum is left to rest on four different types of virgin oak?

    The Expert's Description

S.B.S Jamaica 2021 WPE Danish Virgin Oak is a Jamaican Single Cask Rum distilled from molasses on a pot still at Worthy Park and bottled at cask strength, 61.6%.

The bottle is one quarter of 1423's "Experimental Cask Series" – a box of four 20cl bottles from the same batch of Worthy Park rum, where each cask is a virgin oak barrel sourced from a different country. Alongside the Danish one sit a Spanish, a French and an American release, and the whole point is to taste side by side how the origin of the wood alone changes an otherwise identical rum. The Danish virgin oak cask has given a rum with clear sweetness and spice from the fresh wood, while Worthy Park's signature funk and fermentation character still comes through strongly in the glass.

Worthy Park is among the last 100% Jamaican-owned distilleries on the island and one of the few that still makes rum from its own cane fields to its own bottle. The molasses comes from the estate's own sugar factory, and the rum carries no added colour and is not chill-filtered – as with the rest of the S.B.S range.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Overripe banana and tropical fruit meet a clear funky edge, with a touch of vanilla and toasted wood from the fresh oak.

    Palate

Bold and spiced, with dark chocolate, vanilla and a warm woody sweetness, while the fermented Jamaican character stays present underneath it all.

    Finish

Long and warming, with toasted oak, brown spice and a lingering fruit sweetness that fights a little against the high strength.

    Investment Potential

Medium. Single cask rums from S.B.S tend to move quickly among collectors, and this experimental four-cask series, with four different virgin oak types from the same batch, makes this particular release worth holding onto alongside the other three.

    Did You Know?

Worthy Park stopped rum production entirely in the early 1960s due to oversupply in the Jamaican rum industry – and stood silent for more than 40 years. It wasn't until 2005 that the distillery got new copper pot stills from Forsyths in Scotland and properly returned to the rum map.

Four bottles, one and the same rum, four different casks. That's the idea behind this small release from the Danish bottler 1423, where a single Jamaican rum from Worthy Park was split across four virgin oak casks from four different countries — Spanish, Danish, French and American. This bottle is the French edition.

    The Expert's Description

S.B.S 1423 Jamaica 2021 WPE French Virgin Oak is a Jamaica Single Cask Rum from Worthy Park, aged in a French virgin oak cask and bottled at cask strength, 63.6%.

The rum carries the WPE mark, which at Worthy Park denotes the highest-ester style the distillery produces — a profile known for its powerful, almost perfumed fruitiness. The base is molasses, distilled on a traditional pot still in 2021. Rather than resting the rum in a used bourbon or sherry cask, the standard route for most rum, 1423 filled it into a brand-new, unused oak cask sourced from a French cooperage. Casks like that give up their character far quicker and more intensely than seasoned wood, so even a relatively short maturation leaves a clear mark on the rum.

The bottle belongs to 1423's experimental box series from autumn 2023, where four identical 20cl bottles show what the origin of the wood alone changes in one and the same rum. Non-chill filtered and free of additives, like the rest of the S.B.S range.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Overripe banana and pineapple meet a whiff of nail polish remover, softened by sweet, fresh wood from the new oak.

    Palate

Tropical fruit and spicy young oak, with a hint of vanilla that just about keeps the ester power in check.

    Finish

Long and oak-tight, with lingering, ester-driven fruit sweetness that stays in the mouth.

Jamaica has its own sound in the rum world – funky, fermented, and honestly a little wild – and at Worthy Park Estate, right in the middle of the island, they've been shaping that style since 1720. SBS brought this particular rum home to Denmark and let it rest in a Spanish virgin oak cask, on its own, with nothing else to lean on.

    The Expert's Description

SBS Jamaica 2021 WPE Spanish Virgin Oak is a Jamaica Rum from Worthy Park Estate, aged in a Spanish virgin oak cask and bottled at cask strength, 63.4%.

The rum was distilled from molasses in 2021 on Worthy Park's traditional pot stills and spent two years in a single cask before being bottled in August 2023. The cask is part of a small four-way SBS experiment, where the same rum was split across a Spanish, a Danish, a French and an American virgin oak cask – none of them previously used for anything else. With no leftover whisky or bourbon character in the wood, what's left in the glass is the raw interaction between rum and fresh oak, and Spanish oak tends to bring more spice and structure to the table than its American counterpart.

Worthy Park is today one of only two fully Jamaican-owned rum distilleries left on the island, run by the Clarke family since 1918. Everything happens on site – from cutting the cane in the fields to bottling the finished rum – which makes Worthy Park one of the true single-estate rum producers still standing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh oak spice and vanilla arrive first, with the funky, overripe-banana signature of Jamaican rum sitting just behind, along with a faint trace of cellulose.

    Palate

Bold and spicy, with notes of pepper, coconut and lightly scorched sugar, held together by the tannic grip of fresh oak.

    Finish

Long and warming, with a dry, woody edge and a lingering note of dark fruit.

About SBS 1423 Rum

SBS, short for Single Barrel Selection, is a range of independently bottled single cask rum, gathering selected casks from various distilleries across the Caribbean and South America.

History & Background

The range is developed by the Scottish spirits group 1423, known for its background in whisky bottling, which chose to apply the same single-cask selection philosophy to the rum category.

Production & Style

Each cask is selected individually and typically bottled unfiltered, often at cask strength, to preserve the original character from the individual distillery and cask.

Signature Style

Versatile, Cask-Focused, Authentic
The flavor varies considerably by country of origin and cask type, but an authentic, unfiltered approach runs throughout.
