Jamaica has its own sound in the rum world – funky, fermented, and honestly a little wild – and at Worthy Park Estate, right in the middle of the island, they've been shaping that style since 1720. SBS brought this particular rum home to Denmark and let it rest in a Spanish virgin oak cask, on its own, with nothing else to lean on.

    The Expert's Description

SBS Jamaica 2021 WPE Spanish Virgin Oak is a Jamaica Rum from Worthy Park Estate, aged in a Spanish virgin oak cask and bottled at cask strength, 63.4%.

The rum was distilled from molasses in 2021 on Worthy Park's traditional pot stills and spent two years in a single cask before being bottled in August 2023. The cask is part of a small four-way SBS experiment, where the same rum was split across a Spanish, a Danish, a French and an American virgin oak cask – none of them previously used for anything else. With no leftover whisky or bourbon character in the wood, what's left in the glass is the raw interaction between rum and fresh oak, and Spanish oak tends to bring more spice and structure to the table than its American counterpart.

Worthy Park is today one of only two fully Jamaican-owned rum distilleries left on the island, run by the Clarke family since 1918. Everything happens on site – from cutting the cane in the fields to bottling the finished rum – which makes Worthy Park one of the true single-estate rum producers still standing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh oak spice and vanilla arrive first, with the funky, overripe-banana signature of Jamaican rum sitting just behind, along with a faint trace of cellulose.

    Palate

Bold and spicy, with notes of pepper, coconut and lightly scorched sugar, held together by the tannic grip of fresh oak.

    Finish

Long and warming, with a dry, woody edge and a lingering note of dark fruit.

    Did You Know?

This Spanish Virgin Oak bottle is one quarter of a small experiment from SBS: the same rum from Worthy Park was split across four different virgin oak casks – Spanish, Danish, French and American – so you can taste exactly what the wood itself does to the rum.

Frequently Asked Questions about SBS Jamaica 2021 WPE Spanish Virgin Oak

What makes SBS Jamaica 2021 WPE Spanish Virgin Oak special?

It's a single-cask rum from Worthy Park Estate that spent its entire maturation in a Spanish virgin oak cask – a cask that had never held whisky, bourbon or sherry before. That gives the rum a more direct relationship with the wood itself than most rums get.

What does "virgin oak" mean for the flavour?

With nothing previously in the cask, it's pure oak tannin, vanilla and wood sugars the rum pulls out, rather than leftover bourbon or sherry character. That typically makes for a spicier, woodier profile than a rum aged in a used cask.

Is 63.4% too strong to drink neat?

It's high, but not unusual for a cask-strength rum. Try it first with a few drops of water – it opens the flavour up without losing the power, and you can adjust from there.

    Which glass suits it best?

A Glencairn or rum glass with a narrowed rim gathers the aromas best and makes it easier to pick apart the spice, wood and fruit.

What is Worthy Park Estate known for?

Worthy Park is one of only two fully Jamaican-owned rum distilleries left on the island, and one of the few that controls the entire process from sugar cane field to bottle at a single site. That gives the rum a very direct, authentic Jamaican character.

Why does this rum exist on four different virgin oak casks?

SBS split the same rum from Worthy Park across a Spanish, Danish, French and American virgin oak cask as a small tasting experiment – so you can compare exactly what the wood type does to the rum when everything else stays the same.
