Sharp citrus, toasted nuts and leather, wrapped in the smell of freshly cut oak. Ecuador is not the first country you think of when someone mentions rum.

    Expert Description

S.B.S Ecuador 2016 Bourbon and Virgin Oak Cask is an Ecuadorian Rum matured in ex-Bourbon and virgin oak casks and bottled at 57%. It is a single cask rum made from molasses and distilled in a column still in 2016. After 8 years in cask, 1423 World Class Spirits bottled it in August 2024 as part of the S.B.S Single Barrel Selection series.

Ecuador does not show up much in the rum world, but that is changing. S.B.S Origin Ecuador Malacatos won the award for best Daiquiri rum in a competition run by Rum Explorer, with judges from all over Europe. This bottle is a different style: dry and spicy, with a soft nutty character.

The finish is sweet, with caramel and vanilla.

    Only 298 bottles were filled.

Frequently Asked Questions About S.B.S Ecuador 2016 Bourbon and Virgin Oak Cask

What does S.B.S Ecuador 2016 taste like?

Sharp citrus, toasted nuts and leather on the nose with fresh oak. On the palate it is dry and spicy with soft nuts, and the aftertaste is sweet with caramel and vanilla.

    Is there rum from Ecuador?

Yes, but you do not see it often. Ecuador does not take up much space in the rum world yet, though that is changing, and a single cask rum like this is a good way to taste the style of the country.

What does virgin oak do to a rum?

Virgin oak is a new, unused oak cask. It gives more spice and wood flavour than a used cask. Here it works alongside ex-Bourbon casks, which add caramel and vanilla.

How do you serve an Ecuadorian Rum at 57%?

Neat at room temperature in a whisky glass. A few drops of water open up the nose and let the citrus and nuts come forward.

What goes well with S.B.S Ecuador 2016?

Toasted nuts, dark chocolate and caramel mirror the nose and the finish. A piece of hard cheese is a good match too.

    What is S.B.S?

S.B.S stands for Single Barrel Selection and is a series of single cask bottlings from 1423 World Class Spirits, a Danish company that selects casks from distilleries around the world instead of distilling itself.
