  • Puntacana Esplendido bottle of dark Dominican rum with gold label
    Item no.: 22227865421-892

The cane fields at the eastern end of the Dominican Republic run all the way to the coast, where the air stays salty and damp the year round. Casks work hard in that heat, and they work fast. Esplendido means splendid, and the producer put the word on the label without flinching.

Please note: There is no gift box with this bottle.

    The expert's description

Puntacana Esplendido Dominican Republic Rum 70 cl 38% is a Dominican Rum aged 12 to 20 years in American oak casks, finished in used Burgundy wine casks and bottled at 38%.

The blend brings together young and older distillates married with a 25 year old mother rum. The oldest part supplies the depth, the younger parts the lift, and the result is a very dark rum in the soft Spanish style. The colour is close to mahogany and the texture is thick enough to cling to the side of the glass.

The last six months are spent in used Burgundy wine casks. That is an unusual choice for a Dominican rum, where a finish more often happens in sherry or port wood. The Burgundy casks lay dried red fruit and a light tannin under the sweetness and pull the rum away from straight caramel.

Puntacana Club comes from Oliver & Oliver, a family firm of Cuban origin now based in the Dominican Republic. Maturation happens in a tropical climate, where evaporation runs far higher than in a cool cellar in the north and a cask covers more ground in fewer years. The 12 to 20 years on the label therefore add up to more maturation than the numbers suggest.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet baking straight away, warm and fresh from the oven, with thick toffee behind it. A trace of dark fruit and vanilla pod rounds the aroma off.

    Palate

Brown sugar and fat bourbon vanilla lead, carried by American oak that adds a little dry structure. Dried fruit from the wine casks arrives midway, and the sweetness stays the course without turning sticky.

    Finish

Roasted carob, cinnamon and caramelised fruit. Long and warm, and the oak is the last thing standing.

Oliver & Oliver do not distil. The house is a bodega that buys in distillate, ages it and assembles the blends, and the same cellar stands behind labels such as Opthimus, Quorhum and Cubaney. It is a far more common way of working in rum than most people assume.

    Item no.: 059763-615-9601

"Ki" means sun in the Mayan Quiché language - a name that captures the warmth and soul running through this Guatemalan rum.

    Expert description

Ron Botran Ki' is a Rum from Guatemala, matured in casks including ex-American whiskey and Moscatel casks, bottled at 40%.

Botran Ki' is made from top-quality sugar cane juice, so-called "virgin honey", and matured through a specially adapted solera system, where the rum is dynamically moved between casks of different ages to create a unique balance of young and older rum. Part of the maturation takes place in casks that previously held Moscatel wine, giving the rum its characteristic sweetness and softness.

Behind the rum is Ron Botran, one of Guatemala's most respected rum houses, which has been producing rum since the 1930s. With no added sugar, Botran Ki' retains its authentic character, making it versatile - just as well suited at room temperature as in a cocktail.

    Item no.: 059763-615-1031

The schooner Kirk and Sweeney once sailed rum into the USA during prohibition - today the name lives on in a bottle where even the cork has a story to tell.

    Expert Description

Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva is a Rum from the Dominican Republic, a blend of rums aged in American and French oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Gran Reserva is the more mature expression in the Kirk & Sweeney range, produced like its siblings by J. Armando Bermudez & Co. in Santiago de los Caballeros. The name comes from a famous smuggling schooner that carried rum from the Caribbean into dry USA in the 1920s - a chapter of rum history the brand carries in both its name and its details.

Around the cork sits a thin brass band with coordinates pointing back to the American east coast, where the smuggling ship was once discovered - a small, tangible reminder of where the rum's story truly begins.

    Item no.: 054441-723

A bottle that has crossed the Atlantic by sailing ship without a drop of diesel - that says something about how seriously A Clean Spirit takes the word sustainable. Terra Verde A Midsummer Spirit is summer captured in a Dominican sugarcane spirit.

    Expert Description

Terra Verde A Midsummer Spirit is a Dominican sugarcane spirit (Spirit Drink) aged in bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The spirit is distilled from pure sugarcane juice near the town of San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic and then rests in bourbon casks, giving it a soft, lightly sweet character. Because it is distilled from cane juice rather than molasses, and does not meet every formal requirement for the term rum, it is sold as a Spirit Drink - though in the glass it behaves like a light, easy-drinking golden rum.

Terra Verde means "green earth", and the name is more than marketing. The distillery is among the most sustainable in the world, self-sufficient in green energy, and it recycles the biomass from production as natural fertiliser for its fields.

    Tasting Notes

Rum from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea meets rum from the sunny island of Fiji - and to comply with Australia's strict rules, it is all spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Dry Spiced is a spiced Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 38.5%.

The rum combines matured rum from the South Pacific - from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea and from Fiji - spiced with cardamom, clove, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla. Because Australia's import and production rules are strict, the rum is blended and spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales, then matured for up to three years in ex-bourbon casks under tropical heat.

It is precisely the absence of added sugar that sets Dry Spiced apart from many other spiced rum styles - the spices build the flavour without a layer of sweetness masking the rum's own character.

  • Bottle of Angostura Tamboo Spiced spirit drink from Trinidad
    Item no.: 059763-615-865

Cinnamon, cardamom and clove layered on top of a legendary Trinidad rum - Tamboo takes its name from the bamboo drums that once echoed through the streets of Port of Spain.

    Expert description

Angostura Tamboo Spiced is a spiced Spirit Drink from Trinidad & Tobago based on Angostura rum, bottled at 40%.

Tamboo Spiced builds on Angostura's classic rum heritage and adds Caribbean spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and clove, naturally sweetened with sugar cane molasses. The name refers to "Tamboo Bamboo", the rhythmic bamboo drums used in Trinidad's street processions before steel pans took over in the 20th century - a tribute to the island's musical roots.

Behind the bottle is House of Angostura, founded in 1824 and today just as famous for its iconic aromatic bitters as for its rum. The distillery in Laventille, Trinidad, has spent decades distilling high-quality rum, and Tamboo Spiced is the house's answer to the growing demand for spiced rum styles.

    Item no.: 059763-615-710

Some of the world's rarest cacao beans meet Dominican rum - the result smells more like a chocolate shop than a liquor cabinet.

    Expert description

    A. Michler Ron Espero Cocoa & Rum is a Rum Liqueur from the Dominican Republic bottled at 40%.

Espero Cocoa & Rum combines selected rum from the Dominican Republic with pure Criollo cacao beans. Criollo is considered one of the world's rarest and most sought-after cacao varieties, making up only around 3 to 5 percent of the total cacao market. The beans are preferred by artisan chocolate makers for their rich, complex aroma and smooth, almost bitterness-free flavour, and it is precisely that cacao character that carries the liqueur.

Behind the bottle is A. Michler, a rum brand with roots stretching back to the historic Albert Michler distillery, which has since become part of the wider Caribbean rum scene with a focus on flavoured liqueur releases alongside its more classic rum bottlings.

  • Bottle of Mezclado Mez 3 rum liqueur from Danish rum blendery
    Item no.: 059763-615-703

In an old machine hall in Løsning near Vejle, rum from the other side of the Atlantic is reshaped into something new - no rules, no tradition, just good taste.

    Expert description

Mezclado Mez 3 is a Rum Liqueur from the Danish rum blendery Mezclado, bottled at 36%.

Mez 3 is the third release in Mezclado's original series, where rum imported in barrels from Spain and Panama is blended, spiced and bottled in Løsning. Behind the brand is Radoslaw Nowacki, a young entrepreneur who left an entirely different industry to pursue rum, driven by curiosity rather than tradition.

Mezclado deliberately breaks with the classic idea that good rum can only come from the Caribbean. Instead, barrels are imported from Spain and Panama and then composed together on Danish soil into a sweeter, more approachable style - a counterpoint to heavier, more geeky rum releases.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

    Expert Description

Burning Barn Smoked Rum is a smoked Rum, 3-year-old Demerara-based, bottled at 40%.

Burning Barn is based on a fruit farm and uses wood from their own retired apple trees to cold-smoke a 3-year-old, fruity Demerara rum. The apple wood is split and dried before being used for smoking, giving the rum an intense smoky character with clear hints of apple and burnt syrup. The result has won several awards and is described as seductively soft following a powerful nose.

  • Tasting sample of rare B.R.N. British Royal Navy rum from the fleet's gallon bottles
    Item no.: 059763-615-368

On 31 July 1970, British sailors received their very last daily rum ration - the day since known as "the Black Tot Day". This tasting sample comes from precisely that era.

    Expert Description

Sample 3 cl B.R.N (British Royal Navy) One Imperial Gallon is a dark Navy Rum from an unknown distillery, likely around 57.15% strength, drawn from an original gallon bottle from around 1970.

The rum comes from one of the original gallon bottles (One Imperial Gallon, equal to 4.54 litres) shipped aboard the British Navy for sailors' daily "Tot of Rum". When the Navy stopped issuing rations in 1970, surplus stocks were recalled and stored - some bottles only resurfaced much later, some sold at auction to a retired naval captain. The bottles were packed in protective wickerwork ("demijohns") and sealed with wax, exactly as they left the factory. It is believed the contents come from Pusser's Navy Strength.

The tradition of rum issue in the British Navy dates back to the capture of Jamaica in 1655. British spirits writer Dave Broom has described how "navy rum" evolved from a raw, powerful spirit into a distinct rum style with its own character, largely thanks to traders like James Man of Deptford, who became the Navy's sole supplier.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful, dark and molasses-heavy with a hint of age.

    Palate

Raw and intense, true to the classic navy style.

    Finish

Gunpowder and rum share a long, common history in the British Navy - this release is even named "Gunpowder Proof" after the old method of testing a rum's strength by igniting gunpowder soaked in it.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof Spiced British Navy Rum is a spiced Rum from Guyana, bottled at a full 54.5%.

Pusser's is built on the original recipe used by the Royal Navy for its daily rum rations until 1970, when the tradition was stopped. Item no.: 059763-615-252

Jamaica is known for molasses-heavy, ester-bomb rum - this bottle does something entirely different and goes straight to fresh cane juice.

    Expert Description

SBS 2022/2023 Origin Selection Cane Juice 1423 Jamaica Rum is a white Rum from a single estate in Jamaica, roughly 1 year old, distilled directly from fresh sugarcane juice, bottled at 57%.

According to 1423, this release is the first commercially available example of a pure cane juice rum from Jamaica - distilled directly from fresh, unpressed sugarcane juice rather than the molasses Jamaica is traditionally known for. The rum comes from a single estate, was distilled in 2022 and bottled in 2023 with minimal cask influence, letting the fresh cane juice take centre stage.

The result is markedly different from the powerful, funky Jamaican style most people know - a brighter, greener and more direct rum, showing a completely different side of the country's rum tradition.

    Item no.: 059763-615-239

A rum liqueur that begins life as a 5 year old Dominican rum before being joined by coconut, orange, chocolate and lemon - Patridom Elixir de Ron is dessert in liquid form.

    Expert Description

Patridom Elixir de Ron is a Spirit Drink - Rum Liqueur from the Dominican Republic, based on a 5 year old rum and bottled at 32%.

The foundation of this rum liqueur is a 5 year old rum from the distillery Patrimonio Dominicano, aged in both American and French oak casks, before being blended with natural flavours of coconut, orange, chocolate and lemon, plus sugarcane. The result is a sweet, aromatic liqueur that retains a clear rum character beneath the added flavours.

The liqueur is made from fresh sugarcane juice matured in the tropical climate of the Dominican Republic, the same foundation the rest of the Patridom range is built on.
