Little Brown Dog Whisky

Named after a dog, not a distillery. Little Brown Dog is a young independent bottler from Aberdeenshire whose only rule is that a cask has to carry enough character to earn a label with a dog on it.

  • Aberdeenshire Glen Garioch 12 year old bottle with handwritten Little Brown Dog label, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 222-164646

Two lads on a farm in Aberdeenshire had grown tired of good single malt always vanishing from the shelf before they got there. The idea was simple: make a whisky people can actually find on the shelf. This bottle is the first proof of how it should taste, and it went out of the door before the labels were ready.

Please note: The label on this preview release is handwritten and hand signed, because the printed labels did not arrive in time. Future batches will carry the final design.

    The Expert's Description

Aberdeenshire Glen Garioch 12 Years Old Little Brown Dog is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 60% 1st fill bourbon casks and 40% Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 46%. It was distilled at Glen Garioch in 2013, bottled in 2025 by Little Brown Dog and limited to 500 hand-numbered bottles.

Andrew Smith and Chris Reid of Little Brown Dog have spent years working towards a signature bottling that does not simply appear in small rare batches but stays on the shelf. The vatting is their own work: the bulk from first fill bourbon for vanilla and cereal sweetness, the rest from sherry casks, both refill and first fill, for fruit and depth. The result lands somewhere different from an official Glen Garioch, which tends to be drier and maltier.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured. This release is a preview bottling that shows the direction of Little Brown Dog’s forthcoming regular single malt under the Aberdeenshire name.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe pear and honey first, with a clear malty floor underneath. The sherry portion reports in as raisins, orange peel and a streak of dark sugar. There is a light waxy note too, which Glen Garioch often gives.

    Palate

Soft and full. Vanilla and baked apple open, then the sherry brings dried fruit and a mild spiced warmth of cinnamon and a little ginger. At 46% it is round enough for a weeknight, yet there is still body enough to reward attention.

    Finish

Medium length. Malt, honey and a drier oak note, with a final suggestion of raisin. Clean and free of bitterness.

    Did You Know?

Little Brown Dog is named after Andrew's dog, whose nickname was exactly that, the little brown dog. The company started in 2018 on a farm at Fetternear in Aberdeenshire and has since grown from pure bottling into distilling as well, running both a small copper pot still and a larger column for neutral spirit.

  • Ardlair 12 year old Little Brown Dog Cognac Cask Finish bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 222355-9004

The cask arrived leaking. Ten kilos of whisky had gone somewhere along the way, and most people would have written it off. Little Brown Dog poured what was left into a smaller cask instead, and later gave it a spell in a cognac barrique over thirty years old. Sometimes the best thing comes out of something that went wrong.

    The Expert's Description

Ardlair 2014 Little Brown Dog 12 Years Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a refill bourbon barrel and finished in a cognac barrique over thirty years old, bottled at 52.6%. It was distilled on 22 February 2014 and bottled on 23 February 2026, twelve years and a day.

The cask history is anything but straightforward. It arrived partly leaking and had already lost around ten kilos in transit, so the whisky was decanted into a smaller refill bourbon barrel. In December 2024 it was then given an extra finish in the cognac cask to lift the fruitiness without drowning the spirit.

The cognac cask was used with a light hand. The oily, lightly spiced Highland style still stands at the centre, while the vinous sweetness supports and refines it. Ardlair is the Ardmore distillery’s unpeated whisky, and at Little Brown Dog it goes by the in-house nickname Ardless.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The colour is a warm waxy gold. On the nose muscovado sugar, glazed carrots and a yoghurt with hedgerow berries, a fruit profile at once rustic and creamy. A lightly spiced oak note sits beneath it.

    Palate

Oily and full. Dark syrupy sweetness opens, then a lightly spiced warmth and a vinous fruitiness from the cognac barrique. The whisky opens up markedly with a drop of water, where both fruit and spice step forward more plainly.

    Finish

Medium to long. Spiced oak, dark fruit and a dry waxy close that holds on.

    Did You Know?

At Little Brown Dog, Ardlair goes by the in-house nickname Ardless, with a grin, because it lacks the smoke Ardmore is otherwise known for. It says something about the relaxed approach behind the company, which started in 2018 on a farm at Fetternear in Aberdeenshire and has since grown from pure bottling into distilling as well.

  • Ben Nevis 1999 Little Brown Dog 26 years Single Cask with koi carp label
    Item no.: 059763-615-6659

A Japanese koi carp swims across the label. That is not decorative filler. Ben Nevis shipped new make spirit to Japan for decades, where it was matured and later sold on under a different flag, and Little Brown Dog chose to put that story on the bottle rather than leave it alone.

    The expert's description

Ben Nevis 1999/2025 Little Brown Dog 26 years is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 2nd fill bourbon hogshead and bottled at 50.5 %.

The whisky was distilled on 24 June 1999 and bottled on 30 June 2025, twenty-six years later almost to the day. The cask yielded 220 bottles and there are no others. A 2nd fill hogshead gives up its influence slowly, so after this long it is the structure of the spirit rather than the wood that carries the whisky.

Little Brown Dog was founded in 2018 in Aberdeenshire by two men who left steady jobs to work with spirits. The house is known for full transparency about process and origin, and their single casks are chosen for character rather than for the name of the distillery.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe fruit, honey and cereal with a clear touch of citrus oil.

    Palate

An extra layer of warmth and depth with pineapple tart, crisp puff pastry, nutmeg, toffee and vanilla.

    Finish

Soft and lightly mineral with fine balance and a long, calm close.

High. Twenty-six year old Ben Nevis from a single cask in 220 bottles cannot be recreated, and 1990s spirit grows scarcer, since most of it went into blends and to Japan at the time.

    Did you know?

In the 1960s Ben Nevis experimented with combining malt and grain spirit before maturation and letting them age together in the same cask. The method is called blended at birth and has scarcely been used by any other Scottish distillery.

  • Little Brown Dog bottle with amber coloured Braeval whisky
    Item no.: 22333-9003

White port in a whisky cask is a rarity. As a full sixteen year maturation it is close to unheard of. The colour alone tells you somebody took a chance here.

    Expert description

Braeval 2010 Little Brown Dog 16 Years is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky fully matured in a White Port Barrique and bottled at cask strength, 57.3%.

The whisky was distilled on 2 February 2010 and bottled on 11 February 2026. Unlike most wine cask releases, the spirit spent its whole life in the port cask rather than taking a short finish, and that changes the result fundamentally: the fruitiness of the cask is woven into the whisky rather than laid over it.

Little Brown Dog has made experimental cask types its calling card. The bottler describes the colour as Jurassic Park Amber, which says something about both the hue and the house tone.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Honeydew melon and clear jelly sweets with fresh hay. Bright, summery and almost playful.

    Palate

Green apple peel, tarte aux poires and quince jelly in fine balance. The white port cask brings a refined fruitiness and a vinous elegance.

    Finish

Long and fruity with quince, pear and a dry, lightly spiced tail.

    Did you know?

White port is made from white grapes and fortified in the same way as the red. It is rarely used for whisky maturation, partly because the casks are hard to source in the sizes the whisky industry works with.

  • Bottle of Bruichladdich 2003 Little Brown Dog, a 22-year-old single cask whisky
    Item no.: 222355-88888

On the label sits the dunes of Kintra, painted by a Danish artist in memory of his grandfather. Behind that story lie 22 years in a single bourbon cask, the one Little Brown Dog called the jewel of their collection.

    Expert description

Bruichladdich 2003 Little Brown Dog is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured for 22 years in a bourbon barrel and bottled at 53.6%.

The whisky was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2025 by independent bottler Little Brown Dog, after more than two decades of maturation in a single bourbon cask. The cask was originally part of a parcel of four, but stood out so distinctly in taste, depth and structure according to the bottler that it was purchased on its own.

Only 140 bottles were drawn from this single cask. Each bottle carries an original label featuring an oil painting by Danish artist Bjarne Helverskov Andersen, depicting the dunes at Kintra on Islay, a personal tribute to the artist's grandson, who sold the cask on to Little Brown Dog.

To preserve its raw, authentic character, the whisky is bottled through a 20-micron filter rather than the finer filters typically used, which can leave natural cask sediment in the bottle.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Warm bourbon notes, vanilla and light caramel, with a hint of ripe fruit and citrus oil.

    Palate

Deep, mature and creamy with warm bourbon sweetness, citrus oil and a maritime undercurrent from the Islay coast.

  • Caol Ila 2012 2026 Little Brown Dog 13 Years refill butt single cask bottle
    Item no.: 222355-9005

Bottled on 12 February 2026 – almost to the day fourteen years after distillation in April 2012. Little Brown Dog chose a refill butt for this batch: the largest standard cask, previously used, working slowly and leaving its subtle signature on the distillate.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 2012/2026 Little Brown Dog Spirits 13 Years is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single refill butt cask, bottled at 55.7% without chill filtration and with natural colour.

Little Brown Dog is a British independent bottler with a single-cask focus. For this batch they chose a refill butt – a 500-litre cask that has already matured whisky and retained a discreet, oxidised wood influence. That is where the 'wonderfully oxidised' character described by tasters comes from.

The result is a whisky with classic Caol Ila freshness and salty maritime peat smoke, wrapped in a lightly oxidised, nutty-complex structure. Wax candle, driftwood bonfire and sea urchin are tasting descriptions that reflect a product of precise, controlled craft.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Wax candle and a driftwood bonfire on the beach – fresh and light with clear Islay smoke. Toasted grain, a touch of seaweed and a soft, oxidised depth.

    Palate

Toasted almonds and sea urchin – umami-rich and salty with smoke and a 'dirty martini' oily character. Complex but harmonious and easy to drink.

    Finish

Fresh and lively: gorse, clear saltiness and maritime peat smoke that stays light and elegant throughout.

    Item no.: 222355-8874

Little Brown Dog puts a large blue lobster on the label. That is not accidental – the lobster's shell, the salt water and the characteristic coastal scent are exactly what they want to evoke. Caol Ila 2014, a refill Oloroso sherry hogshead and 306 bottles. That is all there is.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 2014 Little Brown Dog Spirits is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single refill Oloroso sherry hogshead, bottled at 56.3% without chill filtration and with natural colour. 306 bottles.

Little Brown Dog Spirits is a British independent bottler working with single-cask bottlings focused on rarity and character. Each product has its own label reflecting the whisky – the lobster was made for this batch of Caol Ila.

A refill Oloroso sherry hogshead gives a discreet sherry influence – the cask has already been used and carries primarily traces of the dry, nutty Oloroso. Combined with Caol Ila's smoke and saltiness, it creates a complex and layered profile.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sea salt, brine and a subtle smouldering bonfire – a classic coastal feeling. Behind: Lapsang Souchong tea, citrus and bog myrtle. The Oloroso cask gives a soft, nutty depth.

    Palate

Complex and umami-rich. Smoke, sea note, lemon and a tea-like bitterness balanced by the cask's residual sweetness. Fig and smoked spice in the background.

  • Drookit Dug Little Brown Dog Blended Scotch Whisky bottle with brown dog label
    Item no.: 222333-86932

Drookit is Scots for soaked through, the kind of wet you get when the rain arrives sideways. Little Brown Dog has handed the name to a whisky bottled at cask strength that still lands softly.

    The expert description

Drookit Dug 2011 is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in refill sherry butts and bottled at cask strength 43.6%.

The point of this bottle is a small technical detail with a large consequence. After twelve years the two casks had lost so much strength that they arrived at 43.6% entirely on their own. Rather than dilute a stronger whisky down to that level, Little Brown Dog bottled the casks exactly as they stood. The result carries the texture and concentration you would normally associate with far higher strengths, in a form you can drink a full glass of.

The whisky was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2023 from two refill sherry butts with a high malt content. It yielded 509 bottles, neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Thick cut marmalade, bay leaf and a puff of pink candy floss. The sherry is present without filling the whole room.

    Palate

Soft and full of pastry. Bread and butter pudding, rose water Turkish delight and a note of fresh strawberry behind it.

Second round for the little brown dog. Same idea, a cask strength that lands low all by itself, but nine years on a different combination of wood, and the result has a firmer edge than its predecessor.

    The expert description

Drookit Dug 9 Years Old is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at cask strength 45.2%.

Little Brown Dog has assembled it from malt and grain whisky, with a smaller share of older grain pulling the balance in a softer direction. The wood covers both 1st fill and refill bourbon and sherry casks, and nine years have given the whisky more depth than the original Drookit Dug without shifting its underlying character.

Like the rest of the range it is bottled at cask strength with no dilution, no chill filtration and no added colour. The 45.2% is simply where the casks themselves ended up.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and pale caramel from the bourbon wood, with dried apricot and a thread of cinnamon coming off the sherry side.

    Item no.: 222355-9875

The label salutes the Barrowland Ballroom, the old dance hall in the East End of Glasgow whose neon stars above the entrance have lit the way for just about every band that ever passed through the city. The whisky inside is every bit as local, and about as loud.

    The expert description

Glasgow Distillery 2017 Little Brown Dog is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a refill oloroso hogshead and bottled at cask strength 55.7%.

Little Brown Dog buys single casks from distilleries across Scotland and bottles them under its own label with the little brown dog on it. Here they got hold of a cask from The Glasgow Distillery, the first malt distillery in the city in over a century, which opened in 2015 and makes whisky under the name 1770.

The cask is a highly active oloroso hogshead that has been working on the spirit since 2017. That gives a young whisky with far more colour and body than the vintage suggests, and the cask strength of 55.7% holds it all together. The cask yielded only 339 bottles, neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark cherry and raisin first, then cocoa and a touch of leather, with the young malt sweetness poking up underneath.

    Palate

Powerful and juicy. Sherry fruit and muscovado in front, then orange peel, clove and a dry oak edge from the active cask.

  • Glen Garioch 10 Year Little Brown Dog bottle with golden dog silhouettes
    Item no.: 22227865369-8-1

Two guys from Aberdeenshire, a couple of bourbon barrels and a good deal of patience. Glen Garioch is Little Brown Dog's closest neighbour, and they waited a long time for casks worth putting their name on.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 10 Year Old Little Brown Dog Small Batch is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon barrels and bottled at cask strength 56.2%.

The spirit ran off the stills at Glen Garioch on 17 November 2014 and went into glass on 17 February 2025. Little Brown Dog married two 1st fill bourbon barrels for this Small Batch, giving 337 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour.

Glen Garioch sits in Oldmeldrum north-west of Aberdeen and has been distilling since 1797. It is the most easterly working malt distillery in Scotland, and the house style runs drier and more cereal-driven than the softer Speyside profile you meet an hour's drive west. 1st fill bourbon barrels lay vanilla and bright fruit over that cereal core without burying it.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pear tart straight out of the oven, kiwi and baked apple. There is a whisper of whipped cream behind the fruit, and a few minutes in the glass draws out something floral.

    Palate

Full and juicy. Tinned pineapple, honeydew melon and rhubarb crumble, carried by a cask strength that gives the whisky body without scorching. Cereal malt sits under the fruit the whole way.

    Finish

Crème anglaise and conference pear, fading into a dry twist of white pepper. Long and gently spiced.

  • Bottle of Glentauchers Little Brown Dog Pineau des Charentes whisky
    Item no.: 222355-87995

The colour resembles Haribo peach candy melted on the dashboard on a hot summer's day – Little Brown Dog found a Glentauchers cask that lacked a bit of depth, and paired it with a French dessert wine to give it life.

    Expert's Description

Little Brown Dog buys casks from distilleries across Scotland and bottles them under their own brand, always marked with the little brown dog that's the company's signature. This Glentauchers cask was, in their own assessment, a good but slightly characterless whisky, which they chose to pair with a cask from the sweet French dessert wine Pineau des Charentes to add fruit and richness.

The result is bottled at cask strength, 58.9%, non-chill-filtered and with natural colour. Only 285 bottles were made of this single cask release.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Apricot marmalade on buttered wholegrain bread.

Peach cobbler, creamy ice cream with tiny black vanilla flecks and notes of white tea.

    Expert description

Little Brown Dog Calvados Single Cask is a French Calvados, bottled at 47.8%, distilled at Christian Drouin in Normandy and selected by independent bottler Little Brown Dog. The name comes from Andrew's own dog, known as 'the little brown dog', who followed him on distillery visits for years and became the company's unofficial mascot until she passed away in 2022, aged 15 — she lives on on every label. The Calvados comes from the Drouin family, who for three generations have kept the craft of Calvados and the cider-making tradition of the Pays d'Auge in Normandy alive.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin Distillery 2010 Little Brown Dog Port Pipe is a Single Speyside Scotch Whisky, matured in bourbon casks with a finishing period in a port pipe and bottled at 52.4%.

Little Brown Dog Spirits is an independent bottler founded in Aberdeenshire in 2018 by Andrew Smith and Chris Reid, recognisable by the little brown dog that features on every label. The company buys casks from distilleries across Scotland and bottles them under its own name, often in small, hand-picked batches.

This release was distilled at Tamnavulin in 2010 and matured on bourbon casks until 2024, when the whisky was moved into a highly active port pipe. That short but intense finishing period has given the whisky a pronounced character of dark berries and spice. Only 424 bottles were produced of this Small Batch release, bottled at cask strength with no chill-filtration.

About Little Brown Dog

For newcomers, it's a fresh, unpretentious way into single-cask whisky, marked by colourful and sometimes quirky labels. The name comes from Andrew's dog, known as "the little brown dog", who followed him on distillery visits for years and became the company's unofficial mascot until she passed away in 2022, aged 15 - but she lives on on every label.
