A Japanese koi carp swims across the label. That is not decorative filler. Ben Nevis shipped new make spirit to Japan for decades, where it was matured and later sold on under a different flag, and Little Brown Dog chose to put that story on the bottle rather than leave it alone.

    The expert's description

Ben Nevis 1999/2025 Little Brown Dog 26 years is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 2nd fill bourbon hogshead and bottled at 50.5 %.

The whisky was distilled on 24 June 1999 and bottled on 30 June 2025, twenty-six years later almost to the day. The cask yielded 220 bottles and there are no others. A 2nd fill hogshead gives up its influence slowly, so after this long it is the structure of the spirit rather than the wood that carries the whisky.

Little Brown Dog was founded in 2018 in Aberdeenshire by two men who left steady jobs to work with spirits. The house is known for full transparency about process and origin, and their single casks are chosen for character rather than for the name of the distillery.

    Finish

Soft and lightly mineral with fine balance and a long, calm close.

    Investment potential

High. Twenty-six year old Ben Nevis from a single cask in 220 bottles cannot be recreated, and 1990s spirit grows scarcer, since most of it went into blends and to Japan at the time.

    Did you know?

In the 1960s Ben Nevis experimented with combining malt and grain spirit before maturation and letting them age together in the same cask. The method is called blended at birth and has scarcely been used by any other Scottish distillery.

Frequently asked questions about Ben Nevis 1999/2025 Little Brown Dog 26 years

What does 2nd fill bourbon hogshead mean?

That the cask held bourbon and then Scotch whisky once before this round. It gives less vanilla and less colour than a first fill cask, but in return the spirit gets to take up more room in the glass.

    How many bottles exist?

Two hundred and twenty. The cask was empty after the June 2025 bottling, and no more will be made.

What is the story behind the koi carp on the label?

It points at the long connection between Ben Nevis and Japan. For many years the distillery sold unaged spirit to Japanese buyers who matured it and later sold it on as Japanese whisky. Nikka bought the distillery in 1989.

    Who are Little Brown Dog?

An independent house from Aberdeenshire, founded in 2018. They bottle single casks and make their own gin and rum, and they are known for publishing all the data on process and ingredients behind each bottle.

Does it need water at 50.5 %?

Try it neat first in a whisky glass and give it ten minutes. After twenty-six years in cask it is already rounded, and water is more a choice than a necessity here.

Why is Ben Nevis of this age so rare?

Because for decades the distillery sold most of its production on to blends and to Japan rather than laying it down for its own bottlings. Far fewer old casks remain than at comparable distilleries in the Highland.
