Thisted Bryghus Craft Beer

From here comes names like Limfjords Porter, a classic that has defined Danish dark beer across generations. This is Danish brewing tradition, kept alive by a local brewery that was never bought up by the big players.

By the Limfjord in Thisted, beer has been brewed since 1902, and Limfjordsporter is one of the brewery's most distinctive takes on the dark, smoky side of Danish brewing craft.

Expert description of Thisted Bryghus Limfjordsporter

Limfjordsporter from Thisted Bryghus is an almost black bottom-fermented porter with a creamy light-brown head. The brewery, one of Denmark's oldest and most forward-thinking, combines traditional porter brewing with a distinct smoky character in this beer, adding an extra dimension beyond the typical roasted malt profile.

The taste is wonderfully complex, dominated by liquorice, smoke, roasted barley and malt sweetness, nicely balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness. It is a porter with substance, built for slow enjoyment and ideally paired with hearty winter dishes.

Snow on the ground, and a reindeer walking quietly through the trees. That is the picture on the label, and it suits the beer: calm, cold and patient. JuleRen is left to rest in cool cellars until it is ready.

Expert description of Thisted Bryghus Økologisk JuleRen Pale Bock

Økologisk JuleRen is a Pale Bock from Thisted Bryghus in Thy, northern Jutland, brewed with organic pilsner malt and noble German hops. There is nothing in it but water, barley malt, hops and yeast, and the malt and hops are organic. It is bottom-fermented and lagered for a long time in cold tanks before bottling. The result is clean and round, with the 7.9% alcohol tucked away behind the malt sweetness.

The brewery started selling JuleRen in late 1998, and the brewmaster settled on his favourite recipe in 2000. It remains a classic Nordic Bock: pale, simple and made for the Christmas table. The back label says it is mainly for Christmas, but nobody stops you from keeping a few bottles for brighter days.

About Thisted Bryghus

Thisted Bryghus is one of Denmark's oldest breweries, founded in 1902 in Thy. For newcomers, the range is an accessible entry into Danish specialty beer; for connoisseurs, the brewery's independence and long continuity are a rarity in an industry where many local breweries have over the years been bought up by large corporations.

History & Background

Thisted Bryghus was founded in 1902 in the Jutland town of Thisted and has brewed beer continuously ever since, making it one of Denmark's oldest still-active breweries. Through most of the 20th century, the brewery held onto its local identity while many other Danish breweries were bought up or closed. The brewery is especially known for its Limfjords Porter, which since its launch has achieved classic status within Danish dark beer. Today Thisted Bryghus balances traditional recipes with a growing interest in specialty beer and experimental brewing.
