Lervig Craft Beer

In Stavanger, the oil city on Norway's west coast, Lervig started as a small local brewery in 2003. Two decades later, they brew over 200 different beer styles and export around the world. It's proof that a brewery can grow from neighbourhood favourite to global player without losing its appetite for experimentation.

Beneath the brewery in Stavanger, some barrels stand longer than others. Fable is one of them, left to rest year after year while port and bourbon slowly write themselves into the beer. This is not one to rush through.

The Expert's Description of Lervig Fable By Rackhouse

Fable is part of Lervig's Rackhouse series, where the Norwegian brewery from Stavanger pursues its passion for barrel-ageing to the fullest. The base is a powerful Imperial Stout, which has then spent three full years in darkness, first in Port wine barrels from Portugal, then in Bourbon barrels from Kentucky. The two barrel types meet and merge in the beer, and the result is a deep, complex stout carrying traces of both worlds, the Port's sweet, wine-like depth and the Bourbon's warm, smoky sweetness.

Rackhouse is Lervig's dedicated line for barrel-aged beers, where time and wood weigh just as heavily as malt and hops in the finished result. Fable ranks among the more ambitious releases in the series, a beer that demands patience to brew and rewards that same patience in the drinker.

    Tasting Notes

    Aroma

Dark chocolate and stewed fruit greet you first, with a sweet, almost syrupy scent of Port. Beneath that lies the vanilla from the Bourbon barrels, soft and round, alongside a hint of oak.

    Taste

Full-bodied and dessert-like, with dark chocolate up front followed by stewed fruit and a warm, Port-like sweetness. The Bourbon lends the beer body and a lightly smoked caramel note that ties it all together.

    Finish

Long and soft, with a lingering finish of vanilla, dark chocolate and a last trace of red wine-like fruit sweetness that stays for a good while.

    Item no.: 22197280322-5044

In the dark beneath Lervig's brewery in Stavanger, rows of used barrels sit waiting. Some once held bourbon, others rum - but these ones smelled of Finnish rye whisky, and for twenty months they've been passing that on to one of the Rackhouse series' most ambitious brews.

Expert description of Lervig Off The Rack Finnish Rye Whisky By Rackhouse

This beer is the second release in Lervig's Rackhouse series under the name Finnish Rye Whisky - a continuation of the brewery's new favourite among barrel-aged stouts. The base beer is a classic Imperial Stout, which after fermentation was moved onto barrels that previously held Finnish rye whisky. There it rested for a full twenty months, while the rye whisky's spiced character slowly worked its way into the beer.

The result is a deep, complex stout with a clear stamp of rich cacao and mild tobacco, carried by a firm but well-balanced spirit character from the barrels. This is not a beer in a hurry - twenty months is a long time, even in a barrel, and it shows in the finished result.

Off The Rack Finnish Rye Whisky 2024 is a limited release from Rackhouse - Lervig's own barrel-ageing programme, dedicated to exploring what wood does to beer rather than simply brewing it. The series spans stouts, quadrupels and barley wines, all of which have spent time on carefully chosen barrels.

    Tasting Notes

    Aroma

Dark cacao and a hint of tobacco greet you first, backed by a warm, spiced note of rye from the barrels.

    Taste

Full-bodied and malt-forward with clear cacao, roasted malt and a touch of the rye whisky's spiced sweetness. The spirit character is present but never dominant.

    Finish

Long and warm, with a dry finish where the rye spice lingers longest.

Lervig produces everything from easy-drinking pilsners to complex barrel-aged stouts, barley wines, and sour beers, with a strong focus on hop-driven styles that have made the brewery a pioneer in Scandinavia.
