Aqua Mule history: what do we know?

We have not found a documented history behind the name Aqua Mule Remix. The relationship is easy to explain, though. According to Wikipedia the Moscow Mule is commonly dated to 1941 at the Chatham Hotel in New York, and the mule family has since gained many variations, among them the Oslo mule, where the vodka is swapped for aquavit.

Our Aqua Mule and the Moscow Mule

Our recipe and the Moscow Mule
Spirit5 cl aquavit (ours) / 45 ml vodka (Wikipedia, Moscow Mule)
Ginger beer100 ml (ours) / 120 ml (Wikipedia, Moscow Mule)
Lime juice1 cl (ours) / 10 ml (Wikipedia, Moscow Mule)
Ice and garnishIce and lime slice (ours) / Ice and lime slice (Wikipedia, Moscow Mule)

We use a little more spirit and less ginger beer than Wikipedia's Moscow Mule, so the snaps takes up more of the flavour.

About O.P. Anderson in your Aqua Mule

According to Wikipedia O.P. Anderson is a Swedish aquavit from Gothenburg, named after the firm O.P. Anderson & Son. It was introduced in 1891 at the Gothenburg Exhibition Fair under the name Gammal Fin 1ma Aquavit, and Wikipedia calls it the oldest and best-selling aquavit in Sweden. It is flavoured with caraway, anise and fennel and is owned today by Anora Group. We use O.P. Anderson Extra Oak Barrel Matured Snaps in the recipe. Find more in our aquavit and snaps.

About the ginger beer in your Aqua Mule

The recipe uses Stoli Ginger Beer, which we do not have online. If you want something from our range, try Fentimans Ginger Beer, or have a look at our ginger beer and ale. The taste will be a little different.

Tips for your Aqua Mule

Use freshly squeezed lime and a lime squeezer. Pour the ginger beer in slowly last so the fizz holds. See our cocktail equipment for the home bar for the rest of the bar.

Our verdict on the Aqua Mule

It is a fresh, spicy mule for those who want something other than vodka. The caraway and anise come through clearly, and the lime keeps it up. Also try Sailor's Wife.
