  • Tullamore Dew Triple Blend Triple Distilled Irish whiskey bottle
    Item no.: 059763-615-769

"Give it time" has been Tullamore D.E.W.'s promise since 1829. This expression keeps that promise with three whiskey types, three distillations and one familiar, smooth style.

    Expert Review

Tullamore Dew Triple Blend Triple Distilled is an Irish Whiskey combining Pot Still, Single Malt and Grain Whiskey, bottled at 40%.

The whiskey comes from the Tullamore D.E.W. distillery in County Offaly and is triple distilled, giving it the light, approachable style the brand is known for worldwide. By combining all three classic Irish whiskey styles in one blend, it achieves a soft, round profile that works equally well neat and in cocktails such as Irish Coffee.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light and floral, with vanilla and a touch of green apple.

    Palate

Soft and round, with honey and a lightly spiced edge from the pot still component.

    Finish

Short to medium, clean and lightly sweet.

  • 1770 Glasgow Triple Distilled 5 cl miniature bottle, Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Glasgow Distillery
    Item no.: 222354523214-8

A third pass through the stills takes something away. That is the whole point. The heavy oily compounds are left behind, and what comes out is softer, lighter and cleaner at the edge. Five centilitres is plenty to hear the difference.

    The Expert's Description

1770 Glasgow Triple Distilled is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon and Virgin Oak casks and bottled at 46% in 5 cl format. The distillery calls it Smooth & Vibrant, and it is triple distilled, a technique that has all but vanished from Scottish malt production.

On the third distillation only the lightest and purest part of the spirit is collected, and the heavier fatty acids stay behind in the still. That gives a whisky with less oily body but more clarity in the fruit. The bourbon casks lay in vanilla and coconut, and a smaller proportion of Virgin Oak tightens things with spice.

The whisky is unpeated, non-chill filtered and free of colouring. The water comes from Loch Katrine and fermentation runs beyond 72 hours before distillation.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Bright and clean: lemon peel, white flowers and a hint of pear. Vanilla sits underneath as a soft floor, and there is a note of damp sponge cake. No smoke, no weight.

    Palate

Silky to begin, with cream, honey and fresh apple. Then a light chalky minerality arrives with a touch of white pepper from the oak. The body is lighter than in a double distilled malt but it is not thin.

    Finish

Short and clean. Vanilla, citrus and a final breath of malt. It disappears neatly without leaving bitterness.

    Did You Know?

Triple distillation is standard in Irish whiskey but rare in Scotland. Only a handful of Scottish malt distilleries do it routinely, with Auchentoshan in the Lowlands and Hazelburn from Springbank in Campbeltown the best known. Glasgow Distillery runs it for a substantial part of the year and has made the technique part of its identity.

  • Adelphi Private Stock bottle, Blended Scotch Whisky from independent bottler Adelphi
    Item no.: 22227865409-222

Adelphi is known for saying no. Of the casks they get offered, very few are approved to carry the name. Private Stock is the house blend, the place where they show what they can do with an assembly rather than a single cask.

    The Expert's Description

Adelphi Private Stock is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% by the independent bottler Adelphi. It is the house's own blend and differs from Adelphi's single cask releases by being assembled to hit a particular style rather than to show one cask's character.

Adelphi was founded in 1826 as a distillery on the Clyde on the edge of Glasgow. It closed in the early twentieth century and the name lay dormant for almost a hundred years. In 1993 it returned as an independent bottler when Jamie Walker, great-grandson of the former owner Archibald Walker, started the firm again. Donald Houston and Keith Falconer took over in 2004 and later built the Ardnamurchan distillery on the Scottish west coast.

Adelphi’s selection is famously strict: only a small fraction of the casks the house tastes make it through. Private Stock is the bottle where that philosophy meets everyday drinking.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Bright and straightforward. Malt, honey and a touch of green apple first, then vanilla and a light cereal sweetness. There is a clean thread running through it all, no sharp edges and no smoke.

    Palate

Soft and malty. Caramel and baked fruit open, then a mild spiced warmth and a light nutty note. At 40% it drinks easily, and the texture is rounder than you might expect from a blend in this style.

    Finish

Short to medium. Malt and honey linger, with a dry cereal note at the close. Clean finish.

    Did You Know?

Adelphi today owns Ardnamurchan Distillery, which sits on the westernmost point of mainland Scotland. The firm went from being a distillery in 1826, to a pure bottler from 1993, to distilling again after 2014. Very few whisky houses have taken that road twice.

Before the barrel, before time — taste Annandale's spirit just as it looks straight after distillation.

    Expert description

Annandale Rascally New Make Malt Spirit is the distillery's unaged new make spirit, drawn straight after distillation without cask maturation, bottled at 63.5%. 'Rascally Liquor' is the name of Annandale's new make spirit, named after a quote by the Scottish poet Robert Burns, who described whisky as exactly that — 'rascally liquor'. It was first launched on Burns Night in 2015. Annandale Distillery was founded in 1836 as one of Scotland's first legal distilleries, but closed in 1918 while owned by none other than Johnnie Walker. The distillery lay derelict for nearly a century, until Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church read about it in the book 'Scotch Missed: Lost Distilleries of Scotland', tracked down the ruined building, bought the site in 2007 and reopened the distillery in 2014 after extensive restoration. The distillery produces two main expressions: the unpeated Man O'Words and the peated Man O'Sword, continuing the distillery's historic tradition of smoky whisky.

  • Arran Gold bottle, cream liqueur with Single Island Malt Whisky from the Arran distillery
    Item no.: 22227865459-233

Cream and whisky sounds like a shortcut, but it is not when the whisky is actually good. Arran makes its own single malt at Lochranza and uses that rather than anonymous spirit, and you can taste it.

    The Expert's Description

Arran Gold is a cream liqueur made with Single Island Malt Whisky from Arran, bottled at 17%. It is therefore not whisky but a cream-based liqueur in which the distillery’s own malt whisky forms the spirit component.

The difference from an ordinary cream liqueur lies precisely there. Most use neutral spirit or an anonymous blend, while Arran uses malt whisky from its own distillery. That gives a cereal sweetness and a light malt character beneath the toffee and chocolate which would otherwise disappear.

Arran Gold was named World’s Best Whisky Liqueur at Whisky Magazine’s World Whisky Awards in 2007. The distillery sits at Lochranza at the northern end of the Isle of Arran and was founded in 1995.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toffee and milk chocolate first, with cocoa and a clear cream note. Beneath the sweetness sits a malty cereal note from the whisky, which makes the nose less one-dimensionally sweet than an ordinary cream liqueur.

    Palate

Full and creamy. Caramel, chocolate and vanilla open, then the malt whisky comes through with a light cereal sweetness and a hint of oak. At 17% it is soft and easy to drink, but not thin.

    Finish

Medium and creamy, with cocoa and a final malt note lingering after the sweetness.

    Did You Know?

The Arran distillery at Lochranza was founded in 1995 and was the first legal distillery on the island in over a century and a half. Arran otherwise had a long history of illicit distilling, since the island’s remote bays were well suited to keeping the excise at arm’s length. Today the family also runs a second distillery, Lagg, at the southern end of the island.

A blended whisky created as a tribute to Scotland's greatest poet, Robert Burns.

    Expert Description

Arran Robert Burns is a Blended Scotch Whisky built on a foundation of single malt from the Lochranza distillery, bottled at 40%.

Combined with a few specially selected whiskies from other distilleries, Arran creates a high-quality blend meant as a broad, accessible tribute to Robert Burns's legacy, rather than a single-distillery deep dive.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light and inviting with a trace of sweetness.

    Palate

Dry, light and soft with notes of sweet apple and liquorice.

    Finish

    Item no.: 22227865451-18120- 70cl

Some bottles are built to impress. This one is built to be there. Finest is the workhorse of the Ballantine stable, the blend standing at the back of every bar from Glasgow to Barcelona, and it has never tried to be anything other than exactly what it is.

    The expert's description

Ballantine's Finest is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40 %.

Finest is the house bestseller and has been for generations. The blend draws on more than 40 different single malts, with Miltonduff and Glenburgie as the load-bearing Speyside voices, and the grain whisky ties it together into something light, floral and very approachable. The Master Blender role has been handed down since 1827, and the recipe has stayed remarkably steady.

This is not a whisky that demands concentration. It is built to be drunk over ice, in a highball or in a simple cocktail, and it takes that treatment without falling apart. If you are teaching someone to drink Scotch, this is a sensible place to start.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pale and light. Apple blossom, vanilla and a dry cereal note, with a hint of hay and pale oak behind it.

    Palate

Light in the good sense, with honey, green apple and a little vanilla sweetness. The malt is there but it does not push forward.

    Finish

Short, clean and slightly dry. No bitterness, no edges.

    Item no.: 22227865397-245-

There is whisky you read about and whisky you drink. This belongs to the second kind. It has no ambition of ending up in a collection, and that is exactly why it has stayed on the shelf for close to two hundred years.

    The expert's description

Bell's Original is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40 %.

The story starts in Perth in 1825, where Thomas Sandeman opened a spirits business. Arthur Bell joined in 1851 and made blending the heart of the trade, and his name is still on the bottle. Through the 1970s and 1980s Bell's was the best selling blend in Britain.

The backbone of the blend is Blair Athol in Pitlochry, which the house took over in 1933. Malt from a number of other distilleries joins it along with grain whisky, and the result is deliberately kept light and approachable rather than complex.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and light with green apple, cereal and a suggestion of vanilla. A dry malt note sits behind.

    Palate

Mild and smooth with honey and pale cereal. The malt peeks through halfway without taking up room.

    Finish

Short and clean with a last touch of malt.

  • Ben Nevis 10 years miniature Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865467-33

Five centilitres is enough for two proper sips and an opinion. That is the whole idea behind a miniature: you find out whether the whisky is for you without a full bottle standing there afterwards as a reminder that it was not.

    The expert's description

Ben Nevis 10 years Miniature is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46 % in a 5 centilitre bottle.

The contents are the same as the standing ten year old from the distillery, its best known release and one of the purest expressions of the Ben Nevis style. The Fort William spirit is heavy and slightly waxy, and the 46 % keeps the texture intact even in a bottling this small.

The miniature is made for tastings and for those who want to try the distillery before buying a full bottle. It is also one of the few formats where you can line up five different distilleries side by side without emptying the shelf.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Honey, citrus and cream toffee with a floral note on top.

    Palate

Spiced at the start, then honeyed sweetness and an oily middle. Fuller than the five centilitres suggest.

    Finish

Long and powerful with dark chocolate and spice.

  • Dew of Ben Nevis De Luxe 12 years miniature Blended Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865467-32

A blend with twelve years in cask is rare enough on its own. Finding it in five centilitre format is rarer still, since miniatures are usually made from the entry expressions in a range, not from the ones carrying an age statement.

    The expert's description

Dew of Ben Nevis De Luxe 12 years Miniature is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40 % in a 5 centilitre bottle.

De Luxe is the age stated expression in the blend range of the distillery. Twelve years in cask give it more weight and a clearer malt core than Blue Label and Special Reserve, and the malt component comes from Ben Nevis in Fort William.

Ben Nevis is one of the few Scottish distilleries that distils, blends and bottles at the same address. That makes the Dew range an unusually direct link between a single distillery and a blend, where most blends draw malt from many different houses.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt, honey and dried apple with a light note of oak.

    Palate

Round and malty with caramel and a hint of nut. The twelve years read as depth rather than as edge.

    Finish

Medium, dry and warm with malt at the end.

Dew of Ben Nevis was launched as far back as the 1800s and was for a period far better known than the single malt from the distillery. The name refers to the dew on the mountain at whose foot the distillery sits.

    Item no.: 22227865467-27

Special Reserve is the one people in Fort William actually drink. Not the bottle anyone photographs, but the one behind the hotel bar that gets poured without ceremony when someone comes in out of the rain.

    The expert's description

Dew of Ben Nevis Special Reserve Miniature is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40 % in a 5 centilitre bottle.

Special Reserve sits between Blue Label and De Luxe in the blend range of the distillery. It carries more body and malt character than Blue Label but no age statement, and it is meant as the broad everyday expression of the house rather than as a gift bottle.

The malt component comes from Ben Nevis in Fort William, where both blending and bottling take place at the distillery. The miniature makes it possible to meet the range without committing to a full bottle.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Cereal, vanilla and a touch of dried apple. The malt sits just under the surface.

    Palate

Medium bodied with caramel, malt and a lightly spiced edge. More body than you expect from a blend in this size.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and malty.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain Miniature 12 Years Old is a Single Islay Malt Whisky in 5cl, bottled at 46.3%.

The contents are identical to the distillery's well-known 12 Years Old core bottle, just in pocket size. That makes the miniature ideal as an introduction to Bunnahabhain's light, unpeated style, or as a small addition to a tasting alongside several Islay whiskies.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

A remarkably fresh, aromatic hit of sea air with a faint hint of smoke.

    Expert description

Canadian Club 1858 Original Imported Blended Canadian Whisky is the brand's core expression, bottled at 40%. Canadian Club was founded by Hiram Walker, who started his distillery in Walkerville, Ontario, near Windsor, in 1858, thanks to the region's excellent grain. The whisky quickly became a favourite on the back bars of gentlemen's clubs in the US and Canada, earning it the nickname 'Club Whisky'. Walker registered the name as a trademark in 1882, and the word 'Canadian' was added in 1889. Hiram Walker aged his whisky for five years, an unusually long period at the time.
