The Danish west coast has a smoke of its own. It doesn't smell of iodine or hospital corridors, but of heather fires, toasted grain and a little sweetness, and it comes from peat and heather cut close to the distillery in Stauning. In a 5 cl bottle, one dram is enough to make the room smell like a campfire.

    Expert's Description

Stauning RØG Miniature is a Danish Smoked Double Malt Whisky matured in American oak casks and 1st fill Madeira casks and bottled at 43% in a 5 cl bottle.

RØG is Stauning's newer take on smoked whisky and replaces Smoke, which was a pure Single Malt Whisky at 47%. The name is simply the Danish word for smoke, and the idea was a smoke that supports the flavour instead of drowning it. At Stauning, a Double Malt means Single Malt and malted rye working together in the same whisky. Both the barley and the rye are grown in Denmark, floor-malted at the distillery and dried over Danish peat and heather. The spirit is distilled twice in Stauning's 24 small pot stills, fired directly by open flame, and then matures on site. The American oak adds caramelised sweetness, while the Madeira casks bring fruit and depth on top. The whisky is non-chill filtered and natural in colour, so a little sediment can settle in the bottle.

Stauning was started in 2005 by a group of friends on the west coast of Jutland. RØG was named Best Danish Blended at the World Whiskies Awards 2026. 5 cl is just enough for one proper dram, or for a RØG Highball if you'd like to take the long way round.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Soft campfire smoke and toasted grain, with a warm, inviting sweetness just behind.

    Palate

Gentle stone fruit and caramelised oak, then fine, warming spice. The smoke is there throughout, but it sits behind the fruit rather than in front of it.

    Finish

Soft and rounded, with a light smokiness that lingers for a good while.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stauning RØG 5 cl

What does Stauning RØG taste like?

Soft campfire smoke and toasted grain on the nose, then gentle stone fruit, caramelised oak and warming spice on the palate. The smoke stays in the background, and the finish is soft and rounded with a light smokiness that hangs around.

Is Stauning RØG as heavily smoked as an Islay Whisky?

No, the smoke is mild. Stauning made RØG on purpose as an approachable smoked whisky at 43%, where peat and heather give campfire smoke rather than the heavy, tarry smoke of many Islay Whiskies. If you want to understand the difference between peat and smoke in whisky, read our blog post on peat and smoky whisky.

What is a Double Malt Whisky?

At Stauning, it's a whisky where Single Malt and malted rye work together. In RØG, both the barley and the rye are floor-malted at the distillery and dried over peat and heather, so both grains pick up the same soft smoke.

What's the difference between Stauning RØG and Stauning Smoke?

Smoke was a pure Single Malt Whisky at 47%, while RØG is a Double Malt Whisky made with both barley and rye, bottled at 43%. RØG replaces Smoke in Stauning's core range and has been deliberately made more approachable in style.

How should you drink Stauning RØG?

Neat at room temperature, so the smoke and the sweetness can open up in the glass. For something lighter, make a RØG Highball: 5 cl RØG, 15 cl chilled sparkling water, one large ice cube and a twist of lemon peel. A 5 cl miniature makes exactly one. A narrow whisky glass such as a Glencairn gathers the aroma best, and you'll find them in our range of whisky glasses.

How much is in the miniature, and is it a good gift?

There's 5 cl, which is one solid dram. That makes it a nice gift for someone who wants to try Danish smoked whisky without committing to a full bottle, and it sits well next to the Stauning HØST and R.Y.E. miniatures for a small tasting at home.

    Who makes Stauning RØG?

Stauning Whisky, a distillery near Skjern in Western Jutland. The distillery floor-malts its own barley and rye and uses peat and heather from the area for the smoke, so RØG tastes of the west coast.
