When the leaves start to turn, a new book turns up in whisky circles. On the cover, one glass sits on a mossy rock with the Scottish coast and a line of mountains behind it. Inside is a full year of whisky: new distilleries, old arguments and a good many facts that would otherwise be scattered across the internet.

    Expert's Description

Malt Whisky Yearbook 2027 is an English-language reference book on Single Malt Whisky and distilleries around the world, edited by Ingvar Ronde and published as a paperback by MagDig Media Limited.

This is the 22nd edition, and every autumn brings a freshly revised one. The heart of it is the section on Scottish malt distilleries, updated from start to finish. The chapter on distilleries from the rest of the world has been expanded, and there is a section on new distilleries.

Five articles come first. Jan Wisniewski explains what goes on inside a condenser and how that shapes flavour. Nick Morgan makes the case that American Prohibition in the 1920s actually rescued Scotch Whisky. Stefan Van Eycken looks at new Japanese producers finding their own way. Felipe Schrieberg asks the uncomfortable question of how safe a cask of Scotch really is as an investment. Kristiane Westray writes about past, present and people. In his introduction, Ronde admits the industry is still in turmoil, but says there are signs of better days ahead.

The back half holds The Whisky Year That Was, a summary of the year's major events, along with chapters on independent bottlers, whisky shops and whisky on social media. You'll also find tables and statistics on production and consumption, maps and an index. The book includes more than 150 tasting notes on Single Malt Whisky from working distilleries in Scotland and over 500 photographs, most of them new since the last edition.
