About Fary Lochan

FARY LOCHAN DESTILLERI A/S was established in 2009. They are one of the world's smallest distilleries, producing a relatively small amount of whisky each year. However, it is of the highest quality and they do not compromise! Everything is handcrafted in traditional Scottish traditions.

The stills are specially designed in Scotland to give their whisky exactly the flavor they want - every time. And their flavor is quite unique, as they are the only ones in the world to use fresh nettles when smoking our malt.

Their whisky comes in four variants. They call them "the 4 seasons". The taste is round and smooth in all variants - even the smoky ones. And they stand 100% behind the taste, quality and good story. They also make lots of schnapps, liqueurs and other exciting products.

About Fary Lochan Porsesnaps

According to our product page, the porse comes from the west coast of Jutland, where it grows wild between dunes and heather. Fary Lochan Danish Porsesnaps is bottled at 36% and is made, according to the page, with fresh porse and no extracts. The nose is green and resinous, and the taste is bitter-spicy with a dry, herbal finish. The product page suggests a cocktail with raspberries and licorice as a serving idea, and that is the one you have here. You will find it under Fary Lochan Danish Porsesnaps.

Sailor's Wife and sour drinks

We have not found any documented history for the Sailor's Wife itself, so we stick to what we can stand behind. The build resembles a sour. Wikipedia says a sour is made of a base spirit, lemon or lime juice and a sweetener, and that Jerry Thomas described sours in his 1862 book. Here the base is Porsesnaps, and the raspberries and licorice make it its own.

About the ingredients in your Sailor's Wife

The schnapps is Fary Lochan Danish Porsesnaps, and the cane sugar syrup can be Monin Cane Sugar. You squeeze the lemon most easily with a citrus squeezer, and you make the drink in a shaker. Raspberries, licorice powder and a licorice pipe you get where you usually do. We do not have them in the shop, so they are not linked.

Tips for your Sailor's Wife

Muddle the raspberries well, but do not let the licorice powder form lumps. Taste before serving and add a little more syrup if the raspberries are sour. Place the licorice pipe on the rim last, so it is a garnish and not part of the drink. If you lack equipment, have a look at cocktail equipment for the home bar.

My verdict on the Sailor's Wife

This one is easy to love if you like licorice and berries. The porse is clearly there in the taste, so it is not for people who want a neutral drink. On the other hand it is fun and different, and the raspberries make it summery.
