Espresso Martini history

We do not have a documented history for our own version. Wikipedia says the London bartender Dick Bradsell is most often named as the inventor, around 1983. The drink was reportedly made for a young woman who, according to the story, was a model. Her identity is not confirmed. It is also known as a vodka espresso.

Our Espresso Martini and the IBA recipe

 Our recipe and the IBA
Vodka1 part (ours) / 50 ml (IBA)
Coffee liqueur2 parts (ours) / 30 ml (IBA)
Espresso1 part (ours) / 1 strong espresso (IBA)
Sweetness1 part sugar syrup (ours) / no syrup (IBA)
MethodShaken hard with ice (both)
Glass and garnishMartini glass, coffee beans (ours) / cocktail glass, 3 coffee beans (IBA)

With twice as much coffee liqueur as vodka, plus syrup, our version is sweeter than the official one.

About the ingredients in your Espresso Martini

You will find the vodka under vodka, and the sugar syrup can be Monin Cane Sugar. The drink is served in a martini glass. Coffee liqueur and freshly brewed espresso you get wherever you usually do. We have not named a brand, so pick a coffee liqueur you like to drink.

Tips for your Espresso Martini

Shake hard and for a while to get a nice layer of foam. Place the coffee beans carefully on the foam at the end. Taste it and use less syrup if it gets too sweet. If you lack equipment, have a look at cocktail equipment for the home bar.

My verdict on the Espresso Martini

It is easy to make and easy to drink. Coffee and sweetness dominate, and the vodka stays in the background. It suits after dinner or an evening when you want something with a bit of energy. If you prefer dry drinks, cut down on coffee liqueur and syrup.

Frequently asked questions about the Espresso Martini recipe

What is an Espresso Martini?

A cold cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso. It is shaken hard to get a foam on top and served in a martini glass with coffee beans on the foam.

What goes into an Espresso Martini recipe?

1 part vodka, 2 parts coffee liqueur, 1 part espresso and 1 part sugar syrup, plus ice cubes and coffee beans for garnish.

How do you make an Espresso Martini?

Put vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, syrup and ice cubes in a shaker and shake hard. Serve in a martini glass and place coffee beans on the foam.

Why is there foam on an Espresso Martini?

The foam comes from shaking the drink hard with ice and espresso. The harder you shake, the nicer the foam.

Who invented the Espresso Martini?

According to Wikipedia, the London bartender Dick Bradsell is the name most often cited, around 1983. We have no firm documentation.

Is an Espresso Martini a real martini?

No. It contains neither gin nor vermouth. The name comes from the martini glass and from other drinks with martini in the name.

What is the difference between our recipe and the official one?

The IBA uses 50 ml vodka, 30 ml coffee liqueur and one espresso. We use parts, more coffee liqueur than vodka and a little sugar syrup, so ours is sweeter.

What can I use instead of coffee liqueur?

We have not tested anything but coffee liqueur. If you use something else, taste and adjust the syrup and espresso.

Should the espresso be cold?

We do not say so in our recipe. Just do not pour boiling hot espresso straight into the shaker, since it melts the ice faster and makes the drink thinner.

What do I need to make it?

A shaker, a martini glass and ice cubes. If you lack equipment, see our bundle for the home bar.
