Big Peat celebrates its 15th anniversary with a new whisky release - Blog post by Ulrik Bertelsen
Post by Ulrik Bertelsen
Award-winning Islay blended malt Scotch whisky Big Peat reveals this distinctive bottling today in celebration of its 15th anniversary.

Bottled at 50% ABV, this global limited edition has been matured predominantly in carefully selected red wine casks, giving a distinctive take on the peat-rich Islay blended malt Scotch whisky. This special edition of Big Peat comes in a bespoke gift box highlighting 15 unique facts about Big Peat, the Isle of Islay and this particular whisky. There is also a QR code giving you as a consumer the chance to become a member of Big Peat's Club, where more news will be announced in 2025.

Because of the maturation profile of this bottling, Big Peat fans can expect a nose that is warm, earthy and smoke-dominated with dark forest fruit, vanilla and butterscotch. The palate is fruit-driven with toffee, dark chocolate and a subtle nutty nuance. The long finish offers home-baking spice and lingering dry smoke.
The close is a genuine tribute to Islay smoke, combined with the fruity, chocolate and nutty character Big Peat has picked up through slow maturation in red wine casks.
Bottled at 50% ABV with no colouring and no chill filtration, released as a limited edition.

On the special anniversary edition, Chloe Wood, brand manager for Big Peat, said:
"We are delighted to celebrate 15 successful years of Big Peat, and marking the occasion with this release is a special moment for us at Douglas Laing. The hand-selected red wine casks for this edition of Big Peat give us an entirely distinctive flavour profile that balances the classic Islay peat smoke with a fruit-driven, chocolate and nutty character. A dram to be enjoyed and a moment to be celebrated."

About Douglas Laing:

Douglas Laing & Co. was founded in 1948 by Douglas Morton Verindor Laing (born 1912), who came primarily from the shipping trade. First generation: Fred Douglas Laing, born in 1912 and died in 1984, just 72 years old. He built the company up from scratch and made sure both sons learned the trade.

The sons who make up the second generation of whisky merchants are Fred and Stewart Laing. They ran the company together for many years and released plenty of fine bottlings across various ranges, including Old Malt Cask, Provenance and The Premier Barrel. In 2013 they split the company, and Fred Laing brought the third generation, Cara Laing, into the business. Fred's brother Stewart Laing started Hunter Laing together with his two sons Scott and Andrew.
