Ron Zacapa Rum

Zacapa ages its rum 2,330 metres above sea level in the "House in the Clouds", where the cool mountain air slows evaporation and lets the rum mature more slowly than anywhere at sea level. The name itself carries the mystique of Mayan legends from a Guatemala most people have never seen.

  • Bottle wrapped in woven palm leaf decoration with Zacapa label
    Item no.: 22227865395-23

Sugarcane juice instead of molasses, and a solera system borrowed from the world of sherry – it is no accident that Ron Zacapa 23 has become one of the world's most recognisable rums.

    Expert description

Ron Zacapa 23 is a Ron de Guatemala, composed through a Sistema Solera and bottled at 40%.

Unlike most rums, Ron Zacapa is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, and the rum matures at a facility in Guatemala's highlands, where the natural cooling affects the maturation. The solera system, in which younger and older rums are gradually blended through stacked casks of American oak, sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine, gives Ron Zacapa 23 its characteristic, layered sweetness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft, sweet start with caramel, vanilla, cocoa and butterscotch, followed by sherried notes of roasted Brazil nuts and toasted hazelnut, rounded out by toffee, banana and dried pineapple.

    Palate

Full-bodied with caramel, vanilla and cocoa, complemented by spice and oak, along with aromas of roasted figs, dried black cherries and maple syrup.

    Finish

Medium length and complex with dark chocolate, figs, cherries, pipe tobacco, espresso beans and nougat.

    Expert description

Ron Zacapa Ambar 12 Solera Reserva is a Ron de Guatemala matured in a Sistema Solera and bottled at 40%.

The rum is produced in the Guatemalan highlands at altitudes of up to 2,300 metres, where the cool climate slows evaporation and allows a gentler, slower maturation than in many other rum-producing countries. The Ambar expression is composed as a lighter, fresher and fruitier variant of the house style compared to the darker, heavier Centenario releases, and is sold here in a 100 cl bottle.

Zacapa's rum isn't matured at sea level like most other Caribbean rums, but in the Guatemalan highlands, where a phenomenon called "the Angel's Share above the Clouds" means the casks lose less alcohol to evaporation than in the warmer tropical lowlands.

    Item no.: 222253333-8887

2,300 metres above sea level, among active volcanoes and mountain peaks, sits the "House Above the Clouds" – the place where Ron Zacapa lets its rum mature at a cool, slow pace.

    Expert Description

Ron Zacapa Armonia Heavenly Cask is a Guatemalan Solera Rum matured through the Sistema Solera method and bottled at 40%.

Armonia is the third release in Zacapa's Heavenly Cask collection, where each of the four editions celebrates one of the cask types used in the company's Sistema Solera maturation process. The base is not ordinary molasses but sugarcane honey – the concentrated first pressing of fresh sugarcane juice before any sugar is removed. The rum matures through a solera system spanning ages 6 to 23 years, where the young rum first rests at least 3 years in bourbon casks, before moving through freshly charred bourbon casks and finally finishing in Oloroso sherry casks. Behind the edition stands master blender Lorena Vásquez, who has shaped several of Zacapa's recent releases.

    Tasting Notes

Oloroso sherry, caramelised berries, pecan pie and hazelnut.

    Palate

Soft and balanced with dried fruit, wood, nuts and a hint of tobacco.

    Expert Description

Ron Zacapa Reserva 2014 Limitada is a Guatemala Rum, a blend of reserve rums aged between 6 and 24 years, bottled at 45%.

The rum is released by Ron Zacapa, known for its Solera system and for ageing its casks high in the Guatemalan mountains, where the cool temperature slows evaporation and extends maturation. Reserva Limitada 2014 was the second release in a new annual series of luxury vintage editions, hand-selected by master blender Lorena Vasquez and released in limited quantities. The casks included in the blend spent two years in a high-altitude herb garden environment before being blended into the final composition of rum aged from 6 to 24 years.

  • Ron Zacapa XO Guatemala Solera Rum bottle
    Item no.: 222395-1013

From the Guatemalan highlands, where rum matures in the thin air above the clouds, comes Ron Zacapa XO, one of the most celebrated names in Solera rum.

    Expert Description

Ron Zacapa XO is a Guatemala Rum aged via the Sistema Solera and bottled at 40%.

The rum is produced by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala and selected among reserve rums aged between 10 and 25 years in the Solera system. The rums first mature in casks that previously held American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine, after which the blend is further aged in French oak casks that previously held cognac. Guatemala's high elevation, where the rum is aged above 2,300 metres above sea level, gives a slower maturation process and closer contact between rum and wood.

The result is a complex, full-bodied rum, where burnt caramel and toasted nuts meet a long finish of dark chocolate and spice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted oak, burnt caramel, toasted nuts, marzipan and orange peel.

    Palate

Full-bodied and smooth with dark cherry, chocolate, prune and spiced vanilla.

    Finish

Long with warm cinnamon and cloves.

About Ron Zacapa Rum

Ron Zacapa is born in the fertile, volcanic soil on Guatemala's southern coast, where the rum is made exclusively from "virgin honey", the very first, purest syrup from the sugarcane, unlike most other rums that use molasses as a base. After distillation the rum travels for maturation to 2,330 metres above sea level in "The House in the Clouds", where Master Blender Lorena Vasquez uses the historic Sistema Solera method to blend vintages and characters. Collectors regard Zacapa 23's title of world's best rum four years running as having made the brand a collector's item in its own right, while newcomers meet a sweet, easy-drinking rum that often serves as many people's introduction to premium rum.

History & Background

Zacapa is named after the Guatemalan region, whose history stretches all the way back to Mayan civilisation, a heritage reflected today in the hand-woven straw band, "The Petate", that adorns every bottle and is made by descendants of the Maya after a royal symbol of time and space. The Sistema Solera method, in which rums from different vintages and cask types (including former bourbon, sherry and Pedro Ximénez casks) are blended in layers, requires a patience only the slower highland maturation makes possible. This combination of geography, tradition and craft has over the years made Zacapa 23 a repeat winner of the title "World's Best Rum" and secured the brand a place in rum's Hall of Fame.

History & Background

The rum was launched in 1976 and has since gained international recognition for its unusual approach to rum ageing in the Guatemalan highlands.

Production & Style

Ron Zacapa is aged 2,300 metres above sea level, where the cool mountain air slows evaporation and gives the rum time to develop depth without losing too much volume.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Sweet, Complex
The taste offers a full-bodied, sweet character with notes of caramel, dried fruit and spice.
