Glass demijohns filled with charred oak staves sound like a homemade solution. At Mhoba, it's the very method behind one of South Africa's most acclaimed rum expressions.
Expert description
Mhoba Select Reserve Glass Cask is a Pure Single Rum from South Africa, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice and matured over 2 years on charred American oak staves in large glass demijohns, bottled at 60%.
The rum comes from Mhoba Rum Distillery in Mpumalanga. Instead of traditional oak casks, Mhoba uses large glass demijohns filled with virgin American oak staves that are cut and charred over wood coals, a method that gives intense contact between spirit and wood without the cask's own breathing. The result is more balanced and refined than the house's American Oak Aged, yet still with a clear, powerful oak character.

Long, with dry notes of charred oak, toffee, cola and a hint of wild African honey.
