Ciroc Summer Colada history: what do we know?

We have not found a documented history behind this exact recipe. The vodka we know better. According to Wikipedia Ciroc was launched in 2003, is owned by Diageo and is made from grapes instead of grain. It is distilled in France, and the final distillation takes place at Distillerie de Chevanceaux. Wikipedia lists Summer Colada as one of several limited editions, and Ciroc itself announced it in 2017 as infused with coconut, pineapple and other natural flavours.

The name builds on the Piña Colada. Wikipedia mentions three competing accounts of it: Ramón "Monchito" Marrero at the Caribe Hilton in 1954, Ricardo García in 1953 and Ramón Portas Mingot at Barrachina in 1963. Puerto Rico made it the official drink in 1978.

Our vodka colada and the Piña Colada

Our recipe and the Piña Colada
Spirit6 cl vodka (ours) / 5 cl white rum (IBA, via Wikipedia)
Sweetness and fruit3 cl pineapple syrup and a dash of pineapple juice (ours) / 5 cl pineapple juice (IBA, via Wikipedia)
CoconutFrom the vodka, if you use Summer Colada (ours) / 3 cl cream of coconut (IBA, via Wikipedia)
Citrus1.5 cl lemon juice (ours) / None (IBA, via Wikipedia)
ServedOn ice (ours) / Blended with crushed ice (IBA, via Wikipedia)

Our drink is not blended and has no cream of coconut. It is lighter and sharper, because the lemon juice holds the sweetness down.

About the ingredients in your Ciroc Summer Colada

The recipe suggests Ciroc Summer Colada Vodka, which we do not have online. You can try Ciroc Coconut for the coconut flavour, or Ciroc Premium, or see our whole Ciroc vodka range. We do not have 1883 Pineapple syrup online either. If you want something from our range, try Monin Purémix Pineapple. The taste will be a little different.

Tips for your Ciroc Summer Colada

Use plenty of ice and freshly squeezed lemon with a lemon squeezer. Taste before adding more syrup. See our cocktail equipment for the home bar for the rest of the bar. If you want the classic version with rum, see our Pina Colada recipe.

Our verdict on the Ciroc Summer Colada

It is a light summer drink for those who want a tropical taste without rum. It is easy to make for two glasses at once. The flavour depends a lot on the vodka, so without Summer Colada it becomes more pineapple and lemon than coconut.
