St Germain cocktail history: what do we know?

We have not been able to find a source for who first mixed a St Germain cocktail, or when. What we can tell you about is the liqueur the drink is named after. St-Germain is fairly young: Robert Cooper launched it in 2007, after trying an elderflower cocktail in a London bar in 2001. So the drink with liqueur, champagne and water is a newer story than many of the classic cocktails.

About St-Germain elderflower liqueur

According to Wikipedia, St-Germain is made from the flowers of the elder, Sambucus nigra, which come from Savoie in France. They are collected in spring over three to four weeks, and each bottle is numbered with the year the flowers were picked. Cooper Spirits Co was founded in New York in 2006, and Bacardi bought the company in 2013. You can find the liqueur here: St. Germain Liqueur.

Tips for your St Germain cocktail

Use plenty of ice and serve it right away so it does not go flat. The lemon peel makes a difference, so twist it over the glass. You will find the equipment here: cocktail equipment. If you like elderflower, you can also read about our Sloe Gin Fizz.

Our verdict on the St Germain cocktail

It is a simple drink with three things in the glass, and it is quick to make. Deutz Demi Sec is medium dry and the elderflower liqueur is floral, so it suits you if you prefer light and sweet over dry. If you want it less sweet, use a bit more water.
