Prestigious award for Ærø Whisky - Blog post by Ulrik Bertelsen about Danish whisky

Prestigious award for Ærø Whisky - Blog post by Ulrik Bertelsen about Danish whisky
Post by Ulrik Bertelsen

Ærø Whisky has received a prestigious award in the sought-after Worldwide Whisky category at IWSC 2024, one of the largest and most respected international wine and spirits competitions in the world.

"We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition. Our Single Malt Single Cask Whisky has won a gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2024 with an impressive 95 points. Our rum has also earned considerable recognition with a silver medal and 94 points," says Ærø Whisky's managing director Christian Stadager, looking proudly at the certificates from the IWSC.

Intense competition in the whisky world

The IWSC is one of the most respected competitions in wine and spirits, drawing thousands of entrants from around the world every year, all hoping for recognition from the best tasting judges in the business. Competition in the Worldwide Whisky category is particularly fierce with many international entries.

The products are assessed by an expert panel through blind tastings, where the judges do not know the identity of what they are tasting.
Each product is judged on criteria such as aroma, flavour, complexity, balance and overall impression. Beyond the sensory evaluation, the products also go through technical and chemical analysis to confirm their quality and authenticity.

The distinctive taste of Ærø

Ærø is an island you can only reach by ferry or other vessel, which gives Ærø Whisky a distinctive character. The island's own barley, the home-grown yeast from local fruit and the surrounding sea all contribute to the taste of the award-winning Ærø Whisky Single Malt Single Cask.

The judges describe it as: "Aromas of oats and unripe fruit lead to a creamy palate with subtle notes of salt. Soft spices of caramel and cinnamon develop into a powerful but smooth finish with browned butter, dark fruit and winter spice" (anonymous blind taster). Ærø Whisky Rum also earns praise: "Aromas of anise and mint lead to a palate full of juicy apple, peach and nectarine, developing into a finish with tobacco and dried fruit notes" (anonymous blind taster).

Ærø Whisky Distillery is a small gem in the Danish whisky world, on the idyllic island of Ærø, known for its distinctive nature and maritime charm. The distillery was founded with a passion for making a whisky that reflects the character and traditions of the island. Since the beginning, Ærø Whisky has aimed to use local raw materials and sustainable methods, which has produced a whisky with a particular and authentic flavour profile.

Ærø Whisky Distillery uses the island's own barley, grown in fields overlooking the surrounding sea. That barley is carefully selected for its high quality and distinctive flavour nuances. The distillery also uses home-grown yeast made from fruit from the island's own gardens. That yeast contributes a subtle fruitiness that sets the whisky apart from others on the market.

The whisky matures in carefully selected casks stored in the distillery's warehouses. The climate on Ærø, with its maritime influence, plays an important part in the maturation process. The constant proximity to the sea gives the whisky a salty character that complements its complex flavour profile. The maturation is slow and careful, making sure the whisky develops depth and complexity over time.

Ærø Whisky Single Malt Single Cask is an excellent example of the distillery's craft. This whisky is known for its aromas of oats and unripe fruit, leading to a creamy palate with subtle notes of salt. Soft spices of caramel and cinnamon develop into a powerful but smooth finish marked by browned butter, dark fruit and winter spice. Every bottle of this whisky is the result of careful craft and a deep respect for the natural qualities of the raw materials.

Ærø Whisky Distillery is not simply a whisky producer. It is a story about an island, its people and their dedication to making something entirely their own. From the golden barley in the fields to the fruitful gardens and the salty winds off the sea, every drop of Ærø Whisky reflects the love and care put into making it. This whisky is proof that even in a small corner of the world you can make something of exceptional quality that competes on the international stage.

Ærø Whisky is therefore not only a spirit. It is an experience, a journey of flavour that takes you to the heart of Ærø, where tradition, innovation and nature meet in perfect harmony.
