The original penicillin cocktail

The Penicillin was created in 2005 by bartender Sam Ross, an Australian living in New York, and was first served that year at the bar Milk & Honey. The name comes from the drug penicillin and hints that some of the ingredients have a soothing effect, like a hot toddy. You can read more on Wikipedia. See our range of whisky here.

Tips for your penicillin cocktail

Use fresh lemon juice, so the drink gets the sharp edge that balances the honey. The smoky Laphroaig takes up a lot of space, so measure it and stick to the 0.5 cl. If you do not have a syringe, you can drip a little Laphroaig on top instead, so you still get the smoke in your nose when you lift the glass.

My verdict on penicillin cocktail

It is a drink for those who like smoky whisky but do not want a glass that tastes only of peat. Honey and lemon take the worst of the sharpness, and Drambuie adds a little extra spice. It needs three different bottles, so it suits you best if you already have a well-stocked home bar.
