Nordsø Bitter

From the region around the North Sea, where fishermen and dock workers have for generations needed something warming after a cold shift. Nordsø Bitter is the Danish west coast distilled into a bottle, softened with real liquorice root.

  • Black bottle of Danish liquorice bitter with red label
    Item no.: 22227865479-1231

It was born from countless kitchen experiments in the early 1980s, sold abroad, shelved by an international spirits group, and finally brought home again by a Danish family who could not let the recipe go.

    Expert's description

Nordsoe Bitter is an original Danish bitter at 30% ABV, bottled at 70 cl.

The bitter, also known as Nordsoe Olie, was developed in a family kitchen and launched in 1982 after many attempts, achieving cult status in the 1980s as one of the first liquorice-based shots made in Denmark. After 12 years on the market it was sold in 1994 to De Danske Spritfabrikker, which the following year changed its name to Danisco. From there it passed to Swedish V&S Vin & Sprit in 1999 and finally to French Pernod Ricard in 2008, which phased out Nordsoe Bitter in favour of international brands. Hans Ulrik Winther Andersen later bought the brand back, and in 2015 the flavour was refined again based on the old recipe, bringing the bitter back into Danish hands. The base is vodka, genuine liquorice and a secret spice blend.

About Nordsø Bitter

Nordsø Bitter is a Danish bitter, brewed to a classic recipe of herbs and spices. For newcomers it's a soft, lightly liquorice-toned bitter that's easy to enjoy; for collectors it's notable that the recipe dates back to 1981, and the brand was reintroduced in 2016 with an increased content of real, soft liquorice extracted from liquorice root, giving Nordsø Bitter a refined, modern take on an old Danish classic.

History & Background

Nordsø Bitter takes its name and identity from Denmark's west coast, where the fishing and harbour towns along the North Sea have a long tradition of strong, warming bitters for the harsh winters. Locally rooted bitters of this kind typically have their origins in small distilleries or family businesses that have brewed to their own recipes for generations. The Nordsø name signals ruggedness and maritime character rather than a refined cocktail-bar aesthetic.

Production & Style

The bitter is infused with a blend of herbs and spices that give it its characteristic flavor.

Signature Style
