Mozart cocktail history: what do we know?

We have not found a documented history behind the Mozart cocktail, neither who made it nor when. So we do not make one up. What we know is the recipe: a rum in the lead role, a little vermouth and a spoonful of orange liqueur. The build resembles a Manhattan, only with rum instead of whiskey.

What we do know something about is the rum, and it carries the drink.

About Ron Zacapa XO in your rum cocktail

Ron Zacapa comes from Guatemala. According to Wikipedia it was created in 1976 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the town of Zacapa. It is aged high up, 2.3 km above sea level, where the cool, moist air according to Wikipedia makes the rum evaporate more slowly than ageing in tropical heat. The rum is aged using the solera principle, where new rum is blended into older rum through a series of casks. According to Wikipedia the XO is then finished in cognac casks and bottled at 40%.

The number 23 on Zacapa 23 has caused debate about age and sugar. That does not apply to this recipe, which uses XO. Want more? See our rum recipes.

Tips for your Mozart cocktail

Stir calmly and for a while. 30 stirs is on purpose, so the drink gets cold without being watered down. Strain the ice before you pour. Twist the lemon zest over the glass so the oils land on the surface. If you are unsure about bar tools, have a look at our cocktail tools for your home bar. The vermouth is from Martini, and the liqueur is Grand Marnier.

Our verdict on the Mozart cocktail

This is a drink where the rum gets to take up space. There is only 3 cl of anything else in the glass, so if you pick a cheaper rum, you lose much of the idea. Once you have bought a Zacapa XO, it is a fine way to drink it when you do not want it neat.
