Moscow Mule history: what do we know? According to Wikipedia the Moscow Mule is commonly dated to 1941 at the Chatham Hotel in New York. The common story names Jack Morgan (Cock 'n' Bull ginger beer), John G. Martin (Heublein) and Rudolph Kunett (Smirnoff), who are said to have made it from vodka, Morgan's ginger beer and lime. An account from 2007 instead credits the bartender Wes Price, and says the drink helped clear unsold vodka and ginger beer from the bar's cellar.
Martin played a big part in spreading it. He travelled across the US selling Smirnoff and the drink, and had bartenders pose with a copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff, which he photographed with a Polaroid and showed to other bars.
Our Moscow Mule and the IBA recipe Our recipe and the IBA Vodka 4 cl (ours) / 45 ml (IBA, via Wikipedia) Lime juice 2 cl (ours) / 10 ml (IBA, via Wikipedia) Ginger beer Top up (ours) / 120 ml (IBA, via Wikipedia) Glass Riedel glass (ours) / Copper mug or rocks glass (IBA, via Wikipedia) Garnish Lime (ours) / Lime slice (IBA, via Wikipedia)
We use a little less vodka and more lime than the IBA, so the drink gets fresher. The IBA stirs it, we build it in the glass.
