Coopers Choice Whisky

Cooper's Choice pays tribute to the craftsmen without whom there would be no whisky to collect at all — the coopers, whose trade shaped the dram long before the first drop touched a glass. Every cask in the series is chosen for its ability to make a familiar distillate unpredictable again. This is whisky for those who've tasted most of it and are still hunting for the surprise.

  • Teaninich 2011 from Coopers Choice, finished in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask
    Item no.: 222255-963

Thirteen years in the making, with the final stretch spent alongside one of sherry's most intense expressions - Pedro Ximenez has darkened both glass and palate on this single cask Teaninich.

    Expert description

Teaninich 2011/2024 Coopers Choice is a 13 year old Highland Single Malt Whisky at 51%, bottled from a single cask (cask no. #711942) by independent bottler The Coopers Choice.

The whisky finished its maturation in a used Pedro Ximenez sherry cask - a Spanish fortified wine known for its intense sweetness and dark colour, which here adds depth and a rich, dried fruit structure on top of Teaninich's light base character.

Distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2024 after 13 years of maturation, the whisky is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. 348 bottles of this single cask edition were released.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

    Palate

Full and sweet, with notes of raisin, liquorice and dark chocolate, carried on a pleasant warmth.

    Finish

Long, sweet and lightly bitter towards the end, closing on a last trace of dried fig seeds.

About Coopers Choice Whisky

Coopers Choice is a series from the Scottish bottling house The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, named in honour of "coopers", the craftsmen who build and maintain the oak casks whisky matures in. The series focuses on limited single cask releases from Scottish distilleries, often with experimental cask maturation and finishes, letting collectors taste a familiar distillery in a completely different cask style than usually seen in official releases. For beginners, Coopers Choice is an affordable way into single cask whisky, while seasoned collectors often chase the rarer cask types in the range.

History & background

The series is released by The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, a Scottish bottling house rooted in the independent whisky trade, where the name Coopers Choice deliberately honours the craft behind the cask itself rather than the distillery. The philosophy behind the series is that the cask matters just as much to the finished whisky as the distillate itself, and that the cooper's work therefore deserves its own spotlight. Over the years the series has grown to cover a broad range of Scottish distilleries and regions.

Production & style

Coopers Choice selects single casks from various Scottish distilleries and often lets them undergo an extra finish in specialty casks, such as sherry, port or Madeira, adding new layers of flavour on top of the distillery's base character. That gives a series where the variation bottle to bottle is part of the experience.

Signature style

Experimental, Cask-driven, Varied
Flavour shifts noticeably from release to release, driven by the chosen finish, but always with a clear cask character up front.

Did you know?

The name Coopers Choice is a direct tribute to the cooper's trade, a craft tradition that in Scotland has historically mattered as much to a whisky's final flavour as the distillation itself, yet rarely gets its own name on the label.
