Amaretto Liqueur

Apricot kernels roasted into a deep, almond-like sweetness - Amaretto is the Italian liqueur that lies about its own ingredients. Despite the name's nod to almonds, many classic amarettos contain no almonds at all, just distillate from apricot stones that perfectly fools the palate. It's one of the spirits world's more charming paradoxes.

About Amaretto Liqueur

Amaretto is an Italian liqueur, traditionally made from distillate of apricot kernels and sometimes almonds, known for its deep, sweet almond flavour. For the newcomer, amaretto is an accessible digestif, lovely with coffee or in desserts; for the connoisseur, the town of Saronno in Lombardy is a key name - the birthplace of the most famous amaretto brand, Disaronno, with the town's name built right into the brand itself.

History & Background

Amaretto originates from Lombardy in northern Italy, with the northern town of Saronno as the historical home of the liqueur's most famous expressions. The legend of amaretto's origin tells of a young woman who, in the 16th century, is said to have given a drink of apricot kernels and brandy to the painter Bernardino Luini in thanks for painting her portrait, a story that has since become a fixed part of Disaronno's branding. Regardless of the legend's accuracy, amaretto has over the centuries developed into one of Italy's most exported liqueurs, known well beyond the country's borders.

Production & Style

Amaretto is typically made from apricot kernels, which give an almond-like taste without using actual almonds, blended with sugar and alcohol.
