A bottle from the days when the Soviet Union sent vodka westwards under names that have since been forgotten again. The glass is heavier than anything made today, the label printed in a different kind of colour, and the contents have sat untouched for roughly half a century.

Boaka Vintage Vodka is a Russian Vodka bottled in the 1970s at 45%.
Boaka belongs to that crowd of vodka brands built up around export from the Soviet Union and later vanished so thoroughly that almost no written trace remains. The brand is no longer produced, and these days the bottles turn up at auction more readily than production records turn up in any archive.
The 45% is worth noticing. Classic Russian vodka lands at 40%, and the higher strengths were typically reserved for bottlings destined abroad, where duty rules and market expectations both worked differently. The result is a more compact vodka than the version the brand sold at home.
Vodka does not develop in the bottle the way whisky develops in a cask. With no wood there is nothing to draw colour or tannin from, so what you are holding is essentially the spirit that went in some five decades ago. What can change is the closure, which may have let a little air in over the years, so the fill level may have dropped slightly.
Tasting notes
Nose
Dry and grainy with the faint muskiness that old glass and old paper give off. The strength announces itself more plainly than you are used to from a modern bottling.
Palate
Powerful and more angular than today's vodkas. The grain stands out dry, and the extra degrees lay down a warmth that settles in the middle of the tongue.
Finish
Long and warm with a dry, mineral trail. There is no sweetness to rest on at the end.

Condition pulls the other way: scratches and marks on the glass count heavily with collectors, and no original box comes with it. That is why the assessment lands at Medium rather than higher.
Did you know?
All Soviet spirits export ran through a single state body, Soyuzplodoimport, established in 1966. That is part of the reason bottles from the period so often carry Latin lettering and text aimed at foreign buyers, even though production took place behind the Iron Curtain.

Persico Peach Liqueur is a German Fruit liqueur based on peaches, bottled at 25% ABV.
This bottle comes from the German Spezialitäten-Brennereien Friedr. Schwarze and carries the designation "Alt-Berliner Spezialität" (Old Berlin Specialty). The Persico style dates back to around 1870, when it became a fixture of Berlin's bar and café culture as a stone-fruit liqueur flavoured with bitter almond and apricot kernel, and "Sauern mit Persico" - sour cherry liqueur served with Persico - was for decades a classic pairing in Berlin's taverns.
Taste
The liqueur is a classic German stone-fruit liqueur with a sweet-tart peach flavour and a characteristic bitter-almond undertone typical of the style. Flensburg was once northern Europe's rum capital, a harbour town thick with barrels, customs duties and sailors with salt in their beards. From here, rum merchants sent ships out to the West Indies and brought the rum home in casks – and one of the houses that survived the decades still trades under the name Pott.
The Expert's Description
Der Gute Pott 54 is a German Overseas Rum from the 1970s, blended from imported West Indies rum and bottled at 54%.
The brand was founded in 1848 by captain and merchant Hans Hinrich Pott, and the trademark "Der Gute Pott" was registered in 1923. This isn't rum from a single distillery. It follows the classic German rum-house style: molasses rum imported from the West Indies, blended and bottled into its own distinctive character by H.H. Pott Nfgr. Rumhandelshaus in Flensburg. After the Second World War, Pott became the best-selling rum in West Germany, and the name still holds its ground in German bar history.
This particular bottle was bottled in the 1970s. The label's "Flensburg-Rinteln" address belongs to that earlier chapter of the company's history, well before today's packaging, which makes this bottle a piece of rum nostalgia rather than something for the everyday shelf.

The name Scharlachberg comes from a vineyard site in Bingen-Büdesheim, but for over a hundred years it has stood for something quite different from wine – a brandy style that insisted on taking the time it needed, whatever the law demanded.

Scharlachberg Meisterbrand is a German Brandy distilled by Weinbrennerei Scharlachberg, bottled at 38%.
The house was founded in 1898 by Friedrich Wilhelm Petzsch as a cognac distillery and moved to Bingen on the Rhine in 1911. After the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the name had to change to Weinbrennerei Scharlachberg, taken from the Scharlachberg vineyard site itself in Rheinhessen – and in 1920 Meisterbrand reached the market for the first time as a domestic answer to expensive French imports.
Scharlachberg guarantees that only high-quality wines are used for distillation, where the core is drawn off through a careful, high-purity process. Ageing takes place in oak casks for longer than German law requires for the category, giving the spirit time to gather the golden colour and soft vanilla tones the house is known for.
The style behind this bottling dates back to the 1970s, when Scharlachberg had already established itself as one of the most solid names in German Weinbrand.

In Jerez de la Frontera, where the Andalusian sun beats down on whitewashed bodega walls, the Domecq family has aged brandy by the same principle for close to three centuries. Fundador Old Version carries that legacy forward, cask by cask, vintage by vintage.

Fundador Old Version Pedro Domecq is a Spanish Brandy matured through the solera method in ex-sherry casks of American oak, bottled at 38.5%.
The house of Pedro Domecq traces its roots back to 1730, when the Irish merchant Patrick Murphy founded a bodega in Jerez de la Frontera. Roughly a century later, the French wine trader Pedro Domecq Lembeye took over the business and gave it his name, and in 1874 the house created Fundador, the first Spanish brandy ever marketed under the name Brandy de Jerez.
The brandy matures in the same bodegas that hold Jerez's famous sherry, moving through a solera system of stacked casks where young brandy gradually absorbs character from older vintages before it is finally drawn from the bottom row. It is a slow process that gives Fundador Old Version its rounded, dark character.
The Old Version bottling is a nod to the house's classic style, the way it tasted long before Fundador conquered the international market. It shows the brandy without ornament, just craft, time and the damp bodega walls that mark the wood, year after year.

Napoleon VSOP Prestige is a Spanish brandy classified as VSOP, bottled as a Vintage edition at 38%.
The bottle belongs to the Spanish brandy tradition, where eaux-de-vie is matured through the Solera system – a network of linked cask rows in which younger distillate is gradually blended with older vintages each time spirit is drawn from the bottom casks. The method is especially associated with the brandy houses of the Jerez region in Andalusia, where it was historically refined alongside sherry production, and it remains one of the most defining features of Spanish brandy as a category.

John Crabbie & Co was based in Leith near Edinburgh and was as much a merchant house as a whisky producer.
