From here, rum merchants sent ships out to the West Indies and brought the rum home in casks – and one of the houses that survived the decades still trades under the name Pott.

Der Gute Pott 54 is a German Overseas Rum from the 1970s, blended from imported West Indies rum and bottled at 54%.

The brand was founded in 1848 by captain and merchant Hans Hinrich Pott, and the trademark "Der Gute Pott" was registered in 1923. This isn't rum from a single distillery. It follows the classic German rum-house style: molasses rum imported from the West Indies, blended and bottled into its own distinctive character by H.H. Pott Nfgr. Rumhandelshaus in Flensburg. After the Second World War, Pott became the best-selling rum in West Germany, and the name still holds its ground in German bar history.

This particular bottle was bottled in the 1970s. The label's "Flensburg-Rinteln" address belongs to that earlier chapter of the company's history, well before today's packaging, which makes this bottle a piece of rum nostalgia rather than something for the everyday shelf.
