A small card with three dotted lines, a red wax seal and twelve bottles wrapped in straw-coloured paper. The tin is ready to be passed on as soon as you've written a few words. Inside sits a bitter whose recipe has been kept secret in Rheinberg since 1846.
The Expert's Description
Underberg For U is a German Bitter matured in Slovenian oak casks and bottled at 44%, supplied as twelve 2 cl bottles in a green metal gift tin. The tin belongs to Underberg's annual collector's tins and is designed like a wrapped present: green ribbons with a bow and a red wax seal bearing a U.
Inside you'll find the small portion bottles Underberg is known for. Each holds 2 cl, comes wrapped in straw-coloured paper and is closed with a green cap. It's the classic 44% Underberg, so the only new thing is the packaging.
Underberg was created by Hubert Underberg in Rheinberg in 1846, and the recipe has been guarded by the family ever since. The herbs come from 43 countries and are extracted using the method the family calls Semper idem. Afterwards the bitter rests for several months in Slovenian oak casks before bottling. There's nothing in it but water, alcohol and herbs.
On the side of the tin sits a card marked For U with three dotted lines made for a message. The tin's own slogan talks about a tiny ritual and a big friendship, which suits a bitter you drink in one small swig after dinner.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Cool and spiced. The herbs come first, with liquorice a little further back.
Palate
Dry and bitter on the tongue, with pepper and a touch of citrus. The body is full for such a small bottle.
Finish
Long and bitter. The herbs linger well after the bottle is empty.
