Some bottles have sat on a shelf longer than most of us have been driving. This Talisker 10 Year Old dates from the 1980s, when the label still carried the classic "Map Label" motif, and the 100cl format makes it a genuine rarity today.

    Expert Description

Talisker 10 Year Old Old Version Map Label 100cl is an Isle of Skye Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the 1980s, matured in American oak casks and bottled at 45.8%. "Map Label" refers to the illustrated map of Skye that decorated Talisker's labels in this era, before several design changes through the 90s, 2000s and 2012 changed the look.

The 100cl format was common in the export and bar market of the period, but is rare to find today, especially combined with a bottle that is genuinely over 40 years old. The whisky itself is the same powerful 10 Year Old, just from a time when Talisker looked markedly different on the shelf.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is powerful and classic Talisker, with smoke, sea salt and citrus, backed by a deep sweetness typical of whisky that has been left standing for a long time after bottling.

    Palate

The palate is rich and warming, with smoke, salt and citrus up front and a peppery edge building throughout.

    Finish

The finish is long and intense, with a lingering pepper note and a lightly salty close.

Frequently Asked Questions about Talisker 10 Year Old Old Version Map Label 100cl (1980s)

How old is this bottle really?

The whisky was bottled in the 1980s, making the bottle itself several decades old, even though the whisky's own age of 10 years refers to time in cask, not time in the bottle.

Why is it called "Map Label"?

The label from this period had an illustrated map of Skye printed directly on it, a design element Talisker no longer uses in its current look.

Is the whisky still good to drink after this many years in the bottle?

Yes, whisky doesn't develop in the bottle the way wine does, so the flavour is unchanged since bottling in the 1980s, provided the bottle has been kept tightly sealed.

What makes this bottle interesting to a collector?

The combination of a genuine 1980s vintage, the rare 100cl format and the classic Map Label makes it one of the more remarkable older Talisker releases to find.

Should you open or store a bottle this old?

It depends on whether the goal is collecting or tasting. If kept tightly sealed and stored in the dark, it will hold up fine if you later choose to open it.

How does this edition differ from a modern Talisker 10 Year Old?

The flavour profile is the same classic smoky, salty and peppery style, but the bottle, label and format represent a completely different period in the distillery's history. See our range of Scotch whisky to compare with current releases.
