A table set for a multi-course dinner rarely has room to spare, and a water glass on a tall, thin stem is the first thing to tip over when arms reach past each other. Riedel solved that by simply removing the stem.

    The Expert's Description

Riedel Wine Tumbler O Water 0414/01 is a water glass in crystal glass from the Austrian glassmaker Riedel, shaped without a stem for use alongside the wine and spirit glasses on a set table.

The glass is part of The O range, where Riedel took the bowl shape from its classic stemmed glasses and set it directly on a solid base. The result is a glass that takes up less space in the cupboard, stands more securely on the table, and doesn't require guests to keep extra track of where they rest their elbows.

    Design & Materials

The glass is machine-blown in crystal glass and slightly lower and wider than the other glasses in The O range, making it easy to tell apart from the wine glasses on a full table. The thicker, stemless base makes it noticeably less vulnerable to knocks and tips than a traditional footed water glass.

    Use & Recommendation

The glass is intended for water alongside the other glasses at a dinner with several wines or spirits, where the table fills up fast. It is dishwasher safe, so it works just as well for everyday use as for larger dinners.
