Kahlúa was created in 1936 in Veracruz, Mexico, by a group of businesspeople who wanted to combine the country's coffee tradition with rum to create a new type of liqueur. The name is believed to derive from a word in the indigenous Nahuatl language referring to 'the house of the Acolhua people', a nod to the Mexican region where the liqueur was born. In the decades following its launch, Kahlúa became an international bestseller and a cocktail-culture staple, especially once the White Russian became truly popular in the 1990s.
