Eggnog history: from posset to Christmas cocktail
We have not found any documented history for this instant version. Eggnog itself has a long one, though. Wikipedia writes that it may come from posset, a spiced hot milk drink curdled with wine or ale, popular from medieval times to the 19th century. In Britain it was mostly a drink for the wealthy, because milk, eggs and sherry were luxuries.
The first recorded use of the word eggnog is from 1775, and in 1788 it appears in print in the New-Jersey Journal. In the 18th century the drink crossed to the British colonies in America, where rum, cheaper than brandy and wine, became a common ingredient. Wikipedia also mentions Tom and Jerry from the 1820s, a hot eggnog with brandy and rum, and the Eggnog Riot at West Point in 1826. There are many variants around the world, such as coquito in Puerto Rico and rompope in Mexico.
Our instant eggnog and the classic
| | Our recipe and classic eggnog |
| Base | Vanilla cream ice cream (ours) / a cream (classic, according to our text) |
| Alcohol | Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva, 2 dl (ours) / varies, brandy, rum or whiskey (Wikipedia) |
| Time | About 1 minute in a blender (ours) / the cream has to be made first (our text) |
Our version skips the cream and lets the ice cream do the work. The better the ice cream, the better the drink, as we say in the recipe.
