Glögg history: from hot wine to the Christmas drink

We have not found any documented history for our quick glögg. Glögg itself has a long one. Wikipedia writes that the name comes from Swedish glögg, which in turn comes from glödgat vin, hot wine. Danish spells it gløgg. Hot wine was a common Nordic drink by at least the 16th century.

According to Wikipedia, glögg was a common winter drink from the early 19th century, mixed and warmed with juice, syrup and sometimes punsch or harder spirits. Drinking glögg at Christmas became a tradition in the 19th century. In Sweden it has since the 20th century traditionally been served with almonds, raisins, gingerbread biscuits and saffron buns.

Our verdict on quick glögg

This is a glögg for those who want Christmas flavour in a hurry without extract. Diplomático gives a sweet and spicy base on top of wine and port, and Angostura adds a little bite. It is strong and full, so small cups suit it.
