Take a good look at the hop cone on the can. It has been hung with red baubles and golden stars, a pile of presents sits at its feet, and it glows like a proper Christmas tree. The beer inside plays along: Fanø Bryghus swapped the tinsel for juicy citrus and tropical fruit.

Expert description of Fanø Bryghus Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree Double India Pale Ale Beer

Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree is a Double India Pale Ale from Fanø Bryghus, or Double IPA as the can puts it. The brewery sits in Nordby on the island of Fanø, has been brewing since 2009 and works across a wide range of styles. This one comes in at 7.8% ABV in a 44 cl can, and the hops get most of the room.

The hop list is long: Mosaic, Mosaic Cryo, Idaho 7 Hyper Boost, Citra Cryo, Nectaron and Galaxy. A mix like that typically delivers citrus, ripe tropical fruit and a juicy edge. Underneath sits a malt bill of Pale Ale, Golden Promise and wheat malt, and rolled oats go into the brew for a softer, rounder body. It is fermented with ale yeast, so top fermentation.

This is a Christmas beer without spices or cinnamon, just hops, malt, oats and yeast. The brewery says the soft malt character balances an intense hop profile, and that the beer is meant for raising a glass with family and friends before you take a spin around the Christmas tree. The artwork on the can is by Olivia Linn.

    Tasting notes

    Aroma

Juicy citrus and tropical stone fruit come first, think orange, mango and ripe peach. The hops fill the whole glass, and behind them you catch a soft malt base.

    Taste

Citrus and tropical fruit carry on across the palate, while a soft, malty base takes the edge off the hops without stealing their spotlight. The oats add something round and slightly silky. Intense hops, but balanced, so the beer feels full rather than sharp.

    Finish

The hops linger for a good while as the soft malt rounds things off. The finish is full and gentle rather than harsh.

Frequently asked questions about Fanø Bryghus Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree

What kind of beer is Fanø Bryghus Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree?

A heavily hopped Christmas beer in the Double India Pale Ale style, brewed by Fanø Bryghus. It is not spiced like a traditional Christmas brew, and the festive feel comes from citrus and tropical fruit. The ABV is 7.8%.

Is Fanø Bryghus Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree worth it?

Yes, if you like big hoppy beers with the fruit up front. Six hop varieties, including two Cryo hops, and a malt bill with both wheat and oats make for a more ambitious recipe than a standard India Pale Ale. The can artwork is a nice bonus.

What does Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree taste like?

Juicy citrus and tropical fruit lead, backed by a soft, malty base. The oats round out the body, and the hops keep going right to the end.

How many standard drinks are in a can of Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree?

There are 2.3 standard drinks in a 44 cl can according to the label. The ABV is 7.8%, so this one is worth taking at your own pace.

Is Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree a good Christmas gift?

Yes, it is an easy pick for anyone who likes hoppy beer. The can with the hop cone as a Christmas tree looks festive, and the style has plenty of fans. Pair it with a few other Danish craft beers for a small beer gift.

How long does Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree keep?

The best before date is printed on the can below the barcode. Store it cool and dark, as the can says. Hoppy beers are best fresh, so do not wait too long before opening it.

What temperature should Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree be served at?

Cold but not ice cold: around 6 to 8 degrees is a good starting point. Too cold and the hop aroma hides. Let the can sit out of the fridge for a few minutes if it comes straight from there.

Which glass is best for Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree?

A tulip glass or an IPA glass. The shape gathers the citrus and tropical fruit aroma, so you get the most from the hops. If you have neither, a regular wine glass works fine too.

What food goes with Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree?

It handles spicy and rich food well, for example grilled chicken, tacos or a burger. The hops and fruit stand up to bold flavours, and the soft malt cushions them. At a Danish Christmas table it can take on roast pork with red cabbage, and carrot cake works for dessert.

Does Hoppin' Around the Christmas Tree contain gluten?

Yes. The beer is brewed with barley malt, wheat malt and oats, and all three are marked as allergens on the can. It is therefore not suitable if you have coeliac disease or a gluten allergy.

Where is Fanø Bryghus located, and can you visit?

The brewery is at Strandvejen 5 in Nordby on Fanø. There is a Brewers Bar with around 17 taps where you can taste beer close to the production, and the brewery also runs open beer tastings.
