A white bottle, a red Viking ship on the label, and inside something older than Christmas itself. Mead has some 5,000 years of history behind it, and this one follows a recipe from around the year 1700, with apple juice, ginger and cinnamon to chase off the cold.
Expert description
Dansk Mjød Jule Mjød is a Nordic Honey Wine made with honey, apple juice, ginger and cinnamon and bottled at 14.8%.
This is mead, neither beer nor grape wine. Honey is the main ingredient, while the apple juice, ginger and cinnamon give it a spiced, wintry edge. The producer, Dansk Mjød A/S in Billund, says the recipe dates back to around 1700 and that the ingredients are 100% natural, with no additives of any kind.
Jule Mjød is meant as a dessert wine for the days when rice pudding and traditional Christmas desserts come out. The producer also points to cheese as a good partner.
Tasting notes
Nose
Honey first, then a soft apple sweetness with cinnamon on top. The ginger sits in the background and adds a warm, slightly sharp edge.
Palate
Sweet and round with honey up front. The apple juice keeps it fresh enough that the sweetness never turns heavy, and halfway through cinnamon and ginger take over with a soft, spiced warmth.
Finish
The spices linger, mostly cinnamon, while the honey fades out behind them.
