Château de Cayx

A château built in the 1400s to control shipping traffic on the river Lot ended up, against all odds, in the hands of the Monégasque princely house. Today, Château de Cayx is proof of how high Cahors can rise when royal passion meets French terroir.

About Château de Cayx

Château de Cayx is a French wine château in the Cahors region, known for its Malbec-based wine and for once having been owned by the Monégasque princely house. The vineyards today cover 21 hectares, mainly planted with Malbec, which thrives especially well in the area's limestone soils, and the gradual replanting since 1975 means the vines now have an average age of around 25 years - enough to give grapes with concentration and ripeness. The combination of royal history and terroir in top form makes Château de Cayx a name collectors and Cahors lövers pay particular attention to.

History & Background

Château de Cayx has a history dating back to the 15th century, when the château was originally built to control shipping traffic on the river Lot. In 1974, the Monégasque royal couple bought the château, and Prince Henrik in particular left his mark on the estate through extensive renovations and a deep passion for both art and wine. Under his leadership, and later that of winemaker Alexandre Gélis, wine production took a marked step up in quality, as Gélis recognised the potential of the south-facing vineyards and worked deliberately to create wines with greater precision and structure. The result is clear in recent vintages, where Château de Cayx has become a reference point for how high Cahors can rise when terroir and craftsmanship come together.

Production & Style

The wine is made mainly from the Malbec grape, characteristic of the Cahors region, giving it a deep, dark colour and full-bodied structure.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Dark, Tannic
The flavour is full-bodied and tannic, with dark berries and a robust structure.
