Balvenie Signature 12 Batch 001 is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon casks, refill bourbon casks and sherry casks and bottled at 40 %.

Signature launched in 2008 as a bottling built on three cask types rather than the usual two. David Stewart selected the casks by hand, and each batch carried its own number. Batch 001 is the first release in the series, which was phased out again a few years later.

Each cask type plays its own part. First fill bourbon gives vanilla and coconut, the refill casks let the honey character of the spirit come through, and the sherry casks lay raisin and spice on top. Bottling at 40 % keeps the whole thing restrained and coherent.

Tasting notes

Nose

Honey, vanilla and pale apple, with a note of coconut and a discreet sherry sweetness behind.

Palate

Soft and rounded with caramel, raisin and lightly spiced oak. The three cask types pull in different directions but are held together by the malt.

Finish

Medium and warm with spice, honey and a dry note of oak.

What does Batch 001 mean?

That it is the first bottling in the Signature series. Every batch was assembled from its own selection of casks, so the number tells you both the order and which cask composition lies behind it.

Why three cask types instead of two?

Because each type contributes something different. First fill bourbon gives power and vanilla, refill lets the spirit step forward, and sherry brings dark fruit. The combination gives more layers than the two cask types of DoubleWood and shows a broader side of Speyside.

Can you still buy Signature?

Not from the distillery. The series was phased out, and bottles only turn up at retailers with old stock and on the secondary market. Batch 001 is the hardest one to find.

Is it stronger than DoubleWood?

No, both sit at 40 %. The difference lies in the cask composition, where Signature is more vanilla driven and less heavily sherried than DoubleWood.

How do you taste the difference between the three cask types?

Let the glass stand and nose it several times over. The vanilla and coconut come from the first fill bourbon cask, the honey from the refills, and the raisin and spice from the sherry. They take turns leading as the whisky opens up in the whisky glass.

Does it work as a gift?

For someone who has already tasted DoubleWood and wants to move on, yes. The batch number and the fact that the series is no longer made give it an edge over a standard bottling if the recipient cares about the details.
